Formalization and automatic interpretation of map requirements
The map requirements (constraints) can be interpreted by computer programs using their basic embedded functionalities. There are a huge number of constraints available to define the objective of various generalization outputs. Some of the constraints contain high-level knowledge which is not easy to interpret. This needs a huge amount of efforts to implement those constraints. The fact that many constraints have something in common makes the implementation per constraint a waste of resource. The paper proposes to decompose the constraints into more basic units, so as to interpret those constraints more flexible and reuse the already developed functionality as much as possible
The burden of attention:CEO publicity and tax avoidance
We use search volume index (SVI) for a CEO’s name and stock ticker from Google Trends to measure CEO publicity, and examine the competing hypotheses on its relation to tax avoidance. On the one hand, CEOs who receive more attention from retail investors may engage in tax evasion activities to meet investors’ performance expectations; on the other hand, they are more concerned with public image and avoiding being labeled as tax avoiders. Based on the CEOs of S&P 500 firms between 2004 and 2011, our finding supports the former and shows that CEOs with higher publicity manage to have a lower effective tax rate and cash effective tax rate. Such effect is moderated by board independence. Finally, firms with higher CEO publicity pay auditors higher tax fees, suggesting that these CEOs tend to use more tax planning services from auditors
Haptics-Enabled Forceps with Multi-Modal Force Sensing: Towards Task-Autonomous Surgery
Many robotic surgical systems have been developed with micro-sized biopsy
forceps for tissue manipulation. However, these systems often lack force
sensing at the tool side. This paper presents a vision-based force sensing
method for micro-sized biopsy forceps. A miniature sensing module adaptive to
common biopsy forceps is proposed, consisting of a flexure, a camera, and a
customised target. The deformation of the flexure is obtained by the camera
estimating the pose variation of the top-mounted target. Then, the external
force applied to the sensing module is calculated using the flexure's
displacement and stiffness matrix. Integrating the sensing module into the
biopsy forceps, in conjunction with a single-axial force sensor at the proximal
end, we equip the forceps with haptic sensing capabilities. Mathematical
equations are derived to estimate the multi-modal force sensing of the
haptics-enabled forceps, including pushing/pulling forces (Mode-I) and grasping
forces (Mode-II). A series of experiments on phantoms and ex vivo tissues are
conducted to verify the feasibility of the proposed design and method. Results
indicate that the haptics-enabled forceps can achieve multi-modal force
estimation effectively and potentially realize autonomous robotic tissue

Acute spinal cord infarction secondary to ankylosing spondylitis: a case report and literature review
IntroductionSpinal cord infarction secondary to ankylosing spondylitis is a rare but severe disorder.Case presentationHere we present a case of acute spinal cord infarction in a 54 years-old man with a medical history of ankylosing spondylitis, scoliosis, and hypotension. The patient complained of a sudden onset of lower limb weakness. A physical examination showed that he suffered from a dissociative sensory disorder, paralysis, and concomitant sphincter disturbances. After undergoing a whole-spine MRI, he was diagnosed with an acute ischemic injury from T2 to T5. As he did not treat his ankylosing spondylitis, it later caused a spinal deformity, making the lumbar puncture technically challenging. However, using Taylor’s approach, a CSF sample was successfully obtained. A CSF biochemical test ruled out myelitis, NMOSD, and MS. After receiving treatment with low-molecular-weight heparin, atorvastatin calcium, and methylprednisolone, his sphincter function gradually recovered, but his strength was only partially restored.ConclusionAlthough this is a rare entity, it is necessary for physicians to consider it when evaluating patients with a sudden loss of sensation and strength in their lower limbs
Prenatal Deltamethrin Exposure-Induced Cognitive Impairment in Offspring Is Ameliorated by Memantine Through NMDAR/BDNF Signaling in Hippocampus
Background: Pyrethroids have been widely used in residential and agricultural areas. However, little is known about the effects of prenatal exposure to deltamethrin on cognition in early development of offspring. In this study, the effects of prenatal exposure to deltamethrin on learning and memory abilities, N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) subunits, brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), Tyrosine kinase B (TrkB) receptor, and phosphorylated cAMP response element binding protein (pCREB) in the hippocampus of offspring rats were investigated.Experimental Approaches: Groups each of six female SD rats, as F0-generation, were administered with deltamethrin (0, 0.54, 1.35, and 2.7, 9 mg/kg), or memantine (10 mg/kg), or co-administered with deltamethrin (9 mg/kg) and memantine (10 mg/kg) daily by gavage during pregnancy. The learning and memory ability was evaluated using Morris water maze (MWM) task on postnatal day 21. The expression of NMDAR (GluN1, GluN2A, and GluN2B), BDNF, pTrkB/TrkB, and pCREB/CREB in hippocampus were assessed with western blotting.Results: Prenatal exposure to a relatively low dose of deltamethrin (2.7, 1.35, and 0.54 mg/kg) had no impact on learning and memory abilities or the expression of NMDAR, BDNF, pTrkB, and pCREB in the hippocampus of the exposed offspring. The group treated with 9 mg/kg deltamethrin showed impaired cognitive abilities and decreased expression levels of GluN1, GluN2A, GluN2B, BDNF, pCREB/CREB, and pTrkB/TrkB in the hippocampus. However, the declined cognitive ability were ameliorated by memantine treatment with increased GluN1, GluN2A, GluN2B, BDNF, pCREB/CREB, and pTrkB/TrkB expression in the hippocampus.Conclusion and Implications: Prenatal exposure to a relatively high does of deltamethrin (9 mg/kg) alters cognition in offsprings and that this cognitive dysfunction can be ameliorated by memantine treatment. Moreover, NMDAR/BDNF signaling may be associated with the effects of prenatal exposure to deltamethrin on cognitive ability in offspring
The Impact of Psychological Capital and Social Capital on Residents’ Mental Health and Happiness During COVID-19: Evidence From China
ObjectiveThis paper studies the mediating and interactive effects of social capital on psychological capital and the feeling of happiness from the impact of COVID-19. Since its emergence, the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on people’s mental health and affected their hopes for the future. Lifestyle and economic conditions have also been affected and have subsequently impacted people’s sense of confidence in life. This could increase the likelihood of many people developing mental health issues, such as anxiety or depression. Therefore, it is vital to study the influence of psychological capital and social capital on people’s subjective psychology and happiness experiences.Materials and MethodsUsing an ordered probit model, this paper studied the independent influence and interaction between psychological capital and social capital on people’s happiness. The ordered probit model was chosen because subjective well-being (SWB) is an ordered variable. We further used structural equation modeling (SEM) to study the mediating effects of social capital on psychological capital and happiness.ResultsThe regression results showed that both psychological capital and social capital were significantly positively correlated with happiness when controlling for other factors. In addition, psychological and social capital significantly interacted, in which the psychological capital promotes the effect of social capital on happiness. Moreover, the effect of psychological capital on happiness was greater than that of social capital, demonstrating that happiness is more greatly influenced by subjective psychological experience. The interaction coefficient of psychological and social capital was also significant, showing that the two have mutually reinforcing effects on happiness. Finally, health, income class, real estate, stranger trust, age, and urban household registration had significant positive effects on happiness, while the view of money, being female, education had a negative relationship with happiness. The SEM results showed that the mediating effect of psychological capital on happiness was partly transmitted through social capital: the total effect of psychological capital on happiness was highly significant (p < 0.0001), as was the total effect of social capital on happiness (p < 0.0001); however, the coefficient for psychological capital was greater than that for social capital. Through heterogeneity analysis, we found that the relationship between psychological capital, social capital, and happiness was significantly positive in each sub-sample group. There was also a significant interaction between psychological and social capital for men, women, urban and rural residents, and higher education background sample groups. However, the interaction was not significant in the sample group without higher education. In addition, the relationship between the happiness of rural residents and their educational background and gender was not significant.ConclusionWe found that psychological and social capital have significant positive relationships and effects on happiness. Psychological capital demonstrated both direct and indirect influences on happiness, and further strengthens the influence of social capital on happiness. These results support a scheme to emphasize psychological support during the COVID-19 pandemic period to enhance the mental health of citizens
CEO international experience and foreign IPOs
International audienceThis paper examines listing location as a managerial decision by using a sample of IPOs of Chinese entrepreneurial firms in mainland China, the United States and Hong Kong. We find that Chinese entrepreneurial firms managed by CEOs with international experience are more likely to undertake foreign IPOs, especially those returned from countries with more advanced legal institutions and those operating in high-tech industries. The credibility crisis for Chinese firms in 2010 switched the focus of foreign IPOs from the US to Hong Kong. These results are consistent across returnee CFOs and other senior executives with international experience
