    The Dynamics of Real-Time Online Information and Disease Progression: Understanding Spatial Heterogeneity in the Relationship

    The re-emergence of infectious diseases such as measles and polio is creating logistics challenges for the state authorities to curb their spread and contain them. (CL, 2015) Real-time surveillance of infectious diseases is important to detect possible epidemics in advance to prevent shortages of medications (FDA, 2018). The outbreak of an infectious disease creates panic in the community and is accompanied by a sudden increase in the online interest in knowing more about the disease and its symptoms. Prior studies have found a strong relationship between web-based information and disease outbreak but the influence of dynamics of web-based information in real-time is often not considered (Zhang, 2017). The dynamics or rate of change of the online interest in a disease can inform or misinform about perspective cases of the disease in a region. Oftentimes, especially in this connected world individuals overreact to the situation which may send spurious online signals regarding the disease progression. Hence, we study the relationship between the dynamics of online information and the infectious disease outbreak. We also investigate if this relationship could be influenced by regional demographic factors. We analyze weekly online interest dynamics for five infectious diseases over a period of three years across 50 states of the United States. We control for several factors (including weather, demographics, and travelers) and utilize hierarchical functional data models to incorporate real-time dynamics and clustering at the regional level. Preliminary findings suggest that online interest dynamics have a significant relationship with disease outbreak and the effect is segregated at the regional level. These findings are important to develop a system for real-time surveillance and account for the influence of heterogonous online interest during an endemic outbreak

    Mesmerization with the Lights On: Poe’s “The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar”

    Edgar Allan Poe’s eerie short story “The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar” is a particularly noteworthy example of the sublime, a psychological state in which one is overwhelmed by the magnitude of that which is perceived by the mind. Valdemar exemplifies the sublime in that his death has somehow been suspended in time because he was under hypnosis as part of a medical experiment at the moment of his passing. However, the story also draws particular attention to the means by which insight into the nature of death is acquired by the hypnotist who narrates the story. For a more comprehensive understanding of the sublime experience, one may turn to the psychoanalytic theory of Jacques Lacan and the postmodernist work of Slavoj Žižek, which lead to the conclusion that the dramatic chain of events in “Valdemar” is an example of the sliding signifier, and, moreover, that the instability of the signifier may explain the sublime effect

    The posthuman way of war

    Recent interventions from a ‘posthumanist’ or ‘new materialist’ perspective have highlighted the embedded character of human systems within a ‘panarchy’ of human and non-human systems. This article brings attention to a very particular element of materiality, one with a profound significance for issues of security – relations between human and non-human animals in instances of conflict. It is an indication of the deeply human-centred character of both international relations and security studies that almost none of the central texts mention the very significant roles that non-human animals have in the conduct of war. We argue that the character of war would have been radically different but for the forced participation by an enormous range of non-human animals. Even though, with the improvements in transportation over the last century, non-human animals are less evident in the context of the movement of people and equipment, they still play a significant number of roles in the contemporary war-machines of wealthy countries. Drawing on literature from critical animal studies, sociology and memoirs, this article discusses the enormous variety of roles that non-human animals have played in the conduct of war, and examines the character of human–non-human animal relations in times of war
