    Identifying Cultural Ecosystem Services of Urban Green Infrastructure Report about a pilot project undertaken in Lower Austria

    Access to adequate environmental amenities is fundamental for the sustainability and quality of human life, requiring a better understanding of ecological patterns and processes in the places most people call home. As more people will live in cities than in rural environments, this means that the daily interaction with nature for most people will come from their everyday urban places, including urban green infrastructure. The Lower Austrian "Wohnbauforschung" has funded our pilot project in Laa an der Thaya to investigate ecosystem services of urban green infrastructure. This article focuses on our identification of cultural ecosystem services. In itself, green infrastructure represents a compendium of ideals, seeking to improve human well-being and living conditions. Included in those ideals are the concepts of ecosystem services, restoration of natural habitats, improving biodiversity, human well-being and adaptation to climate change. One of the most important challenges of the 21st century is to sustain the functions of ecosystems and to support ecosystem services for those issues. Urban green infrastructure is intrinsically a heterogeneous landscape of micro-infrastructure networks set in a culturally-determined ecosystem. Sustaining and co-ordinating the multiple benefits from an urban network of neighbourhood green infrastructure will require an integrated landscape framework, a coherent approach to governance and collaborative adaptive management. Urban green infrastructure is considered more and more as a strong sustainable tool in adressing those challenges . A paradigm shift at multi-scalar levels requires an urban green infrastructure strategy that integrates some of the fundamental concerns of urban citizens in their everyday lives. These include quiet places for contemplation and restoration of their health and well-being, environmental security, and the cultivation and culture of food. In these everyday gestures can the relationship between people and nature be restored. The value of ecosystem services in the form of urban green infrastructure has become increasingly recognised in the policy agenda (Carpenter et al., 2009), supported by a growing number of studies on their benefits and costs. But the gap to implementation remains to be bridged over. As the ecosystem services of green infrastructure are still not well recognised in Austrian municipal councils, we initiated a place-based approach to the perception of green infrastructure and climate change in Laa an der Thaya. This pilot project aims on the one hand to enhance the understanding of ecosystem service benefits of green infrastructure and on the other to strengthen the potential for the implementation of green. Urban green infrastructure included all public spaces, urban forests and parks. We considered green infrastructure as a network integrating a broad range of quality green places, designed and managed to enhance the character of place, while providing multiple benefits of ecosystem services. Our investigations at selected places represent a place-based scale where it is possible for humans to perceive and understand effects of climate change, as well as the benefits of urban green infrastructure. Within this approach the perceived cultural ecosystem services of the stakeholders were incorporated with a survey of existing ecosystem services (CO2 storage, rainwater management and urban heat island effects) to estimate the benefits from green infrastructure. This would lead to the intitial development of modules to implement and enhance the urban green infrastructure in Laa. To overcome the barriers to implement green infrastructure an integrated approach has been developed together with a core stakeholder group. The "cultural services" were investigated in a public participation process, the Moved Planning Process or "MPP" (Rottenbacher 2009), in conjunction with a SWOT analysis to strengthen reflection and appreciation of the natural benefits of urban green infrastructure systems. In a dialogue about cultural ecosystem services and the multiple benefits of green infrastructure we defined together "special " areas, i.e. areas that are of a particular value, eg. for recreation, as meeting places, but also available places wherein green infrastructure can be implemented

    Higher dietary flavonoid intakes are associated with lower objectively measured body composition in women: evidence from discordant monozygotic twins

    Background: Although dietary flavonoid intake has been associated with less weight gain there are limited data on its impact on fat mass and the contribution of genetic factors to this relationship has not previously been assessed. Objective: To examine associations between flavonoid intakes and fat mass. Design: In a study of 2734 healthy female twins aged 18-83 years from the TwinsUK registry intakes oftotalflavonoids and seven subclasses(flavanones, anthocyanins, flavan-3-ols, flavonols, flavones, polymers and proanthocyanidins) were calculated from food frequency questionnaires. Measures of DXA-derived fat mass included limb-to-trunk fat ratio (FMR), fat mass index and central fat mass index. Results: In cross-sectional multivariable analyses, higher intake of anthocyanins, flavonols and proanthocyanidins were associated with lower FMR, with differences between extreme quintiles of -0.03 (SE 0.02 P-trend = 0.02), -0.03 (SE 0.02 P-trend = 0.03) and -0.05 (SE 0.02 P-trend <0.01), respectively. These associationsremained significant even after further adjustment for fibre and total fruit and vegetable intakes. In monozygotic intake-discordant twin-pairs, those with higher intakes of flavan-3-ols (n= 154, P = 0.03), flavonols (n= 173, P = 0.03) and proanthocyanidins (n= 172, P < 0.01)had significantly lower FMR than their cotwins with within-pair differences of 3-4%. Furthermore, in confirmatory food-based analyses, twins with higher intake of flavonol- (onion, tea and pears, P = 0.01) and proanthocyanidin- (apples and cocoa drinks, P = 0.04) and, in younger participants (< 50 y) only, anthocyanin-rich foods (berries, pears, grapes and wine, P = 0.01) had 3-9% lower FMR than their co-twins. Conclusions: These data suggest that higher habitual intake of a number of flavonoids, including anthocyanins,flavan-3-ols,flavonols and proanthocyanidins, are associated with lower fat massindependent ofshared genetic and common environmental factors. Intervention trials are now needed to further examine the effect of flavonoid-rich foods on body composition

    Co-producing knowledge to address disaster risks in informal settlements in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: pathways toward urban equality?

    In Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, small-scale and everyday disasters are a manifestation of the multidimensional inequalities faced by residents of informal settlements. The co-production of knowledge about disaster and other risks, bringing together residents with local NGOs and local government representatives, is a potential entry point for addressing inequalities. This paper reports on such a co-production process in two informal settlements, carried out by the Centre for Community Initiatives with the Tanzania Urban Poor Federation and local government at the Mtaa level, and it looks at how community assessments of risks travel into local governance and policymaking. The involvement of Mtaa officials in this process has led to incremental changes in local governance, for example better linking of local budgets with disaster risk reduction (DRR) priorities and the representation of civil society on the municipal disaster management committees. The paper also points to the challenges of achieving integration of DRR and development activities at the local level

    Plasma IMS Composition Measurements for Europa and the Other Galilean Moons

    NASA and ESA are planning the joint Europa Jupiter System Mission (EJSM) to the Jupiter system with specific emphasis to Europa and Ganymede, respectively. The Japanese Space Agency is also planning an orbiter mission to explore Jupiter's magnetosphere and the Galilean satellites. For NASA's Jupiter Europa Orbiter (JEO) we are developing the 3D Ion Mass Spectrometer (IMS) with two main goals which can also be applied to the other Galilean moons, 1) measure the plasma interaction between Europa and Jupiter's magnetosphere and 2) infer the 4 pi surface composition to trace elemental and significant isotopic levels. The first goal supports the magnetometer (MAG) measurements, primarily directed at detection of Europa's sub-surface ocean, while the second gives information about transfer of material between the Galilean moons, and between the moon surfaces and subsurface layers putatively including oceans. The measurement of the interactions for all the Galilean moons can be used to trace the in situ ion measurements of pickup ions back to either Europa's or Ganymede's surface from the respectively orbiting spacecraft. The IMS instrument, being developed under NASA's Astrobiology Instrument Development Program, would maximally achieve plasma measurement requirements for JEO and EJSM while moving forward our knowledge of Jupiter system composition and source processes to far higher levels than previously envisaged. The composition of the global surfaces of Europa and Ganymede can be inferred from the measurement of ejected neutrals and pick-up ions using at minimum an in situ payload including MAG and IMS also fully capable of meeting Level 1 mission requirements for ocean detection and survey. Elemental and isotopic analysis of potentially extruded oceanic materials at the moon surfaces would further support the ocean objectives. These measurements should be made from a polar orbiting spacecraft about Europa or Ganymede at height 100 km. The ejecta produced by sputtering of the surfaces of Europa and Ganymede has been shown to be representative of the surface composition. Level 2 science on surface geology and composition can then be further enhanced by addition of the following: 3D Ion Neutral Mass Spectrometer (INNS), 3D plasma electron spectrometer (ELS), and hot plasma energetic particle instrument. The measurement approach is to alternate between times measuring pickup ions and times measuring plasma and magnetic field parameters along the spacecraft trajectory. By measuring the pickup ion energy, arrival direction and mass-per-charge, the ion can be traced back along the ejection trajectory to the approximate area of origin if the 3-D electric field and magnetic field are known. In situ observations of plasma flow velocities and vector magnetic fields can be used to determine the local convective electric field (E = -VXB) along the spacecraft trajectory. By combining this information with models of the magnetospheric interaction with Europa, one can generate 3D maps of the electric and magnetic field and compute the trajectories of the pickup ions back to the surface or exospheric points of origin. In the case of Ganymede there is the additional complexity of its own internal dipole magnetic field, while Io's volcanic activity introduces the complexity of a highly structured denser atmosphere. Callisto with its less globally extended exosphere will have a simpler interaction than for Europa (i.e., more like our moon). We will discuss these differences in light of the above proposed technique. Finally, the INNS observations and neutral exosphere models are needed to estimate production rates of pickup ions. The hot plasma measurements are needed to correct for sputtering rates which can be time dependent and electron plasma observations for electron impact ionization rates. Instrument characteristics, field-of-view requirements, modes of operation and effects of radiation on instrument functionality will be discussed

    Diet and bone mineral density study in postmenopausal women from the TwinsUK registry shows a negative association with a traditional English dietary pattern and a positive association with wine

    Background: The effect of diet on bone mineral density (BMD) remains controversial, mainly because of difficulties in isolating dietary factors from the confounding influences of age, lifestyle, and genetic factors. Objective: The aim of this study was to use a novel method to examine the relation between BMD and diet. Design: A co-twin control study design with linear regression modeling was used to test for associations between BMD and habitual intakes of calcium, vitamin D, protein, and alcohol plus 5 previously identified dietary patterns in postmenopausal women from the TwinsUK registry. This approach exploited the unique matching of twins to provide an estimate of an association that was not confounded by age, genetic background, or shared lifestyle. Results: In >2000 postmenopausal women (BMD data on 1019, 1218, and 1232 twin pairs at the hip neck, hip, and spine, respectively), we observed a positive association between alcohol intake (from wine but not from beer or spirits) and spine BMD (P = 0.01) and a negative association with a traditional 20th-century English diet at the hip neck (P = 0.01). Both associations remained borderline significant after adjustment for mean twin-pair intakes (P = 0.04 and P = 0.055, respectively). Other dietary patterns and intakes of calcium, vitamin D, and protein were unrelated to BMD. Conclusion: Our results showed that diet has an independent but subtle effect on BMD; wine intake was positively associated with spine BMD, whereas a traditional (20th-century) English diet had a negative association with hip BMD

    The 'Short Course Oncology Treatment' (SCOT) trial

    6 months of oxaliplatin-containing chemotherapy is usually given as adjuvant treatment for stage 3 colorectal cancer. We investigated whether 3 months of oxaliplatin-containing chemotherapy would be non-inferior to the usual 6 months of treatment. Methods: The SCOT study was an international, randomised, phase 3, non-inferiority trial done at 244 centres. Patients aged 18 years or older with high-risk stage II and stage III colorectal cancer underwent central randomisation with minimisation for centre, choice of regimen, sex, disease site, N stage, T stage, and the starting dose of capecitabine. Patients were assigned (1:1) to receive 3 months or 6 months of adjuvant oxaliplatin-containing chemotherapy. The chemotherapy regimens could consist of CAPOX (capecitabine and oxaliplatin) or FOLFOX (bolus and infused fluorouracil with oxaliplatin). The regimen was selected before randomisation in accordance with choices of the patient and treating physician. The primary study endpoint was disease-free survival and the non-inferiority margin was a hazard ratio of 1·13. The primary analysis was done in the intention-to-treat population and safety was assessed in patients who started study treatment. This trial is registered with ISRCTN, number ISRCTN59757862

    Dual-specificity phosphatase 5 controls the localized inhibition, propagation, and transforming potential of ERK signaling

    Deregulated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling drives cancer growth. Normally, ERK activity is self-limiting by the rapid inactivation of upstream kinases and delayed induction of dual-specificity MAP kinase phosphatases (MKPs/DUSPs). However, interactions between these feedback mechanisms are unclear. Here we show that, although the MKP DUSP5 both inactivates and anchors ERK in the nucleus, it paradoxically increases and prolongs cytoplasmic ERK activity. The latter effect is caused, at least in part, by the relief of ERK-mediated RAF inhibition. The importance of this spatiotemporal interaction between these distinct feedback mechanisms is illustrated by the fact that expression of oncogenic BRAF(V600E), a feedback-insensitive mutant RAF kinase, reprograms DUSP5 into a cell-wide ERK inhibitor that facilitates cell proliferation and transformation. In contrast, DUSP5 deletion causes BRAF(V600E)-induced ERK hyperactivation and cellular senescence. Thus, feedback interactions within the ERK pathway can regulate cell proliferation and transformation, and suggest oncogene-specific roles for DUSP5 in controlling ERK signaling and cell fate
