High-Resolution Measurements of Intersystem Bands of Carbon Monoxide toward X Persei
In an echelle spectrum of X Per acquired with the Space Telescope Imaging
Spectrograph we have identified individual rotational lines of 11
triplet-singlet (intersystem) absorption bands of ^12CO. Four bands provide
first detections for interstellar clouds. From a comparison with the zeta Oph
sight line we find that X Per is obscured by a higher 12CO column density of
1.4 x 10^16 cm-2. Together with the high spectral resolution of 1.3 km s-1,
this allows (i) an improved measurement of previously published f-values for
seven bands, and (ii) an extraction of the first astrophysical oscillator
strengths for d-X (8-0), (9-0), and (10-0), as well as for e-X (12-0). The
^13CO d-X (12-0) band, previously suspected to exist toward zeta Oph, is now
readily resolved and modeled. Our derived intersystem f-values for ^12CO
include a few mild (leq 34%) disagreements with recent predictions from a
perturbation analysis calculated for the interstellar excitation temperature.
Overall, the comparison confirms the superiority of employing multiple singlet
levels in the calculations of mixing coefficients over previous single-level
predictions.Comment: 11 pages (incl. 1 figure). Accepted by ApJ Letter

Numerical analysis of droplet deposition in inkjet printed electronics assembly
In this paper, a computational approach for the analysis of microscale droplet impact dynamics is presented. The approach is intended to support a condition based monitoring system to enhance quality and reliability of inkjet printed electronics components. The Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) approach of Lucy and Gingold and Monaghan has been used as the basis for the model, with the δ-SPH terms of Marrone et al used to improve handling of the dynamic impact events and the gradient correction terms of Belytschko used to improve the accuracy of interface dynamics. Model validation has been performed through comparison against a macroscale dam break problem and through a microscale analysis designed to determine accurate surface tension-pressure behaviour based on the Young-Laplace relation. The model is used to assess impact of a single drop on a uniform surface and the three dimensional formation of multi-drop layers

Oscillator Strengths for B-X, C-X, and E-X Transitions in Carbon Monoxide
Band oscillator strengths for electronic transitions in CO were obtained at
the Synchrotron Radiation Center of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Our
focus was on transitions that are observed in interstellar spectra with the Far
Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer; these transitions are also important in
studies of selective isotope photodissociation where fractionation among
isotopomers can occur. Absorption from the ground state (X ^1Sigma^+ v'' = 0)
to A ^1Pi (v'= 5), B ^1Sigma^+ (v' = 0, 1), C ^1Sigma^+ (v' = 0, 1), and E ^1Pi
(v' = 0) was measured. Fits to the A - X (5, 0) band, whose oscillator strength
is well known, yielded the necessary column density and excitation temperature.
These parameters were used in a least-squares fit of the observed profiles for
the transitions of interest to extract their band oscillator strengths. Our
oscillator strengths are in excellent agreement with results from recent
experiments using a variety of techniques. This agreement provides the basis
for a self-consistent set of f-values at far ultraviolet wavelengths for
studies of interstellar (and stellar) CO.Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures, ApJS (in press
Methodology for Y Chromosome Capture: A complete genome sequence of Y chromosome using flow cytometry, laser microdissection and magnetic streptavidin-beads
This study is a comparison of the efficiency of three technologies used for Y chromosome capture and
the next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies applied for determining its whole sequence. Our
main findings disclose that streptavidin–biotin magnetic particle-based capture methodology offers
better and a deeper sequence coverage for Y chromosome capture, compared to chromosome sorting
and microdissection procedures. Moreover, this methodology is less time consuming and the most
selective for capturing only Y chromosomal material, in contrast with other methodologies that result
in considerable background material from other, non-targeted chromosomes. NGS results compared
between two platforms, NextSeq 500 and SOLID 5500xl, produce the same coverage results. This is the
first study to explore a methodological comparison of Y chromosome capture and genetic analysis. Our
results indicate an improved strategy for Y chromosome research with applications in several scientific
fields where this chromosome plays an important role, such as forensics, medical sciences, molecular
anthropology and cancer sciences.Spanish Alfonso Martin Escudero Foundation for the financial support to one of the

Serum S100B levels after meningioma surgery: A comparison of two laboratory assays
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>S100B protein is a potential biomarker of central nervous system insult. This study quantitatively compared two methods for assessing serum concentration of S100B.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A prospective, observational study performed in a single tertiary medical center. Included were fifty two consecutive adult patients undergoing surgery for meningioma that provided blood samples for determination of S100B concentrations. Eighty samples (40 pre-operative and 40 postoperative) were randomly selected for batch testing. Each sample was divided into two aliquots. These were analyzed by ELISA (Sangtec) and a commercial kit (Roche Elecsys®) for S100B concentrations. Statistical analysis included regression modelling and Bland-Altman analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A parsimonious linear model best described the prediction of commercial kit values by those determined by ELISA (y = 0.045 + 0.277*x, x = ELISA value, R2 = 0.732). ELISA measurements tended to be higher than commercial kit measurements. This discrepancy increased linearly with increasing S100B concentrations. At concentrations above 0.7 μg/L the paired measurements were consistently outside the limits of agreement in the Bland-Altman display. Similar to other studies that used alternative measurement methods, sex and age related differences in serum S100B levels were not detected using the Elecsys® (p = 0.643 and 0.728 respectively).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Although a generally linear relationship exists between serum S100B concentrations measured by ELISA and a commercially available kit, ELISA values tended to be higher than commercial kit measurements particularly at concentrations over 0.7 μg/L, which are suggestive of brain injury. International standardization of commercial kits is required before the predictive validity of S100B for brain damage can be effectively assessed in clinical practice.</p
