Introduction. To study the trends in incidence rate, type and surgical treatment, and patient characteristics of surgically verified endometriosis during 1987-2012. Material and methods. This is a register-based cohort study. We identified women receiving their first diagnosis of endometriosis in surgery from the Finnish Hospital Discharge Register (FHDR). Quality of the FHDR records was assessed bidirectionally. The age-standardized incidence rates of the first surgically verified endometriosis was assessed by calendar year. Results. The cohort comprises 49956 women. The quality assessment suggested the FHDR data to be of good quality. The most common diagnosis, ovarian endometriosis (46%), was associated with highest median age 38.5years (interquartile range 31.0-44.8) and the second most common diagnosis, peritoneal endometriosis (40%), with median age 34.9years (28.6-41.7). Between 1987 and 2012, a decrease was observed in the median age, from 38.8 (32.3-43.6) to 34.0 (28.9-41.0) years, and in the age-standardized incidence rate from 116 [95% confidence interval (CI) 112-121] to 45 (42-48) per 100000 women. The proportion of hysterectomy as a first surgical treatment decreased from 38 to 19%, whereas that of laparoscopy increased from 42 to 73% when comparing 1987-1995 with 1996-2012. Conclusions. This nationwide cohort of surgically verified endometriosis showed a decrease in the incidence rate and in the patient age at the time of first diagnosis, even though the proportion of laparoscopy has increased. The number of hysterectomies has decreased. These changes are likely to reflect the evolving diagnostics, increasing awareness of endometriosis, and effective use of medical treatment before surgery.Peer reviewe

Ritualisation of Crisis Communication : Crowd-enabled responses to the Stockholm terror attack on Twitter

Digital connectivity enables ordinary people to participate in the social construction of crises. This article explores the crisis responses of common people through the prism of ritual communication in the case of the 2017 Stockholm terror attack. The ritual approach has helped to produce a nuanced understanding of the social functions of patterned and performative communication in crises and conflicts. However, the crisis communication of ordinary people has remained understudied from the viewpoint of ritualisation. Drawing from digital media ethnography and content analysis of a Twitter feed created around the hashtag #openstockholm, it is claimed that the ritualisation of crisis responses illustrates the active agency of ordinary people and contributes to ephemeral social cohesion.Peer reviewe

"Mitä teen, kun ruoka ei maistu?" : Opaslehtinen syöpään sairastuneelle kouluikäiselle lapselle ravitsemuksesta

Opinnäytetyömme tarkoituksena oli tehdä opaslehtinen syöpään sairastuneelle kouluikäiselle lapselle ravitsemuksesta. Opaslehtinen tehtiin yhteistyössä Syli ry:n kanssa kaikille syöpään sairastuneille lapsille syöpämuodosta ja syöpähoidoista riippumatta. Opaslehtinen tarjoaa ratkaisuja ravitsemuksellisiin ongelmiin, joihin lapsi mahdollisesti törmää sairautensa aikana. Lisäksi tuotoksessa on huomioitu lapsen ikätaso. The objective of this thesis was to prepare a nutritional guide for the school-aged children who have become ill with cancer. The guide was made in co-operation with Syli ry to all the children in spite of the cancer form and cancer treatments they are having. The guide offers solutions to the nutritional problems that the children might encounter during their illnesses. The illustrated guide containing concrete methods for the nutritional problems was created as an output of this thesis. The guide provides hints for the children on what to do when the appetite has gone. Special attention has been paid on the children’s age. The guide has been designed so that the children are able to understand and read it by themselves. The purpose of this thesis is to increase the understanding of the significance of nutrition during the healing process. We present that the nutrition guidance during the healing process is to be studied and the function of the guide to be tested as well

WEAPONIZATION OF LIVENESS: STREAMING DEATH AS A HYBRID MEDIA EVENT OF TERRORIST VIOLENCE

This paper offers a critical exploration of the notion of liveness and, in particular, the production of liveness in the context of hybrid media event of terrorist violence. With Christchurch mosque attacks of March, 2019, as the empirical context of study, the paper demonstrates i) how the perpetrator produced liveness through the live streaming of the massacre in digital media; ii) how this material circulated in diverse digital platforms; and iii) what kind of struggles emerged around visibility and erasure by way of removal as carried out by different platforms (e.g. YouTube, Facebook, Twitter). The empirical data collection and analysis is based on a method of digital media ethnography. We posit that live streaming of the Christchurch mosque attacks resulted in the weaponization of liveness (Callahan 2017), accelerating the experience of ‘real time’ witnessing of death on multiple levels. While a relatively small number of people watched the massacre take place in ‘real time’ (en direct), a much larger audience captured the ‘re-enactment’ of liveness through the active circulation and sharing of the video on different platforms. This, the paper argues, shapes the hybrid media events of terrorist violence of today not only as a phenomenon of intensified and accelerated death experienced online, but also as a phenomenon that amplifies the process of disgracing and dishonoring the dignity of human life as unique
