Computational Structural Form Finding and Optimization of Shell Structures

    p. 611-617The purpose of this research is to analyze the structural behaviour of shell structures by studying the way (applied) loads naturally flow through shell structures to their supports and relating this flow off forces to the shell geometry. To unlock this secret will give a fundamental understanding of the behaviour of shell structures and thus the means to design these with form efficiently and elegance. Shells have geometrical and structural properties, which have a close relationship, and determine its structural performance. The newly developed thrust network analysis [1] lays a direct relation in a graphical way between the geometry of a shell and possible funicular solutions under gravity loading, which gives understanding and provides the means for developing new shapes. The ¿rain flow¿ analysis [2] makes the relation between the shell geometry and the flow of loads applied to its surface. Similar with the flow of shear forces in plates in bending the ¿rain flow¿ analysis gives the relationship between the initial curvatures of the shell surface geometry and the curvatures along the shell¿s surface which represent the load path of the flow of forces of the shell and the internal forces. By combining these algorithms and analysis methods, a further understanding of the form force relationship of shells can be obtained. This unified approach is the basis for a new computational method for form finding and optimizing shell structures.Borgart, A.; Tiggeler, L. (2010). A CCSDS Software System for a Single-Chip On-Board Computer of a Small Satellite

    Get PDF
The work presented in this paper is part of a Surrey Space Centre research project that aims to reduce the size of an on-board computer to a single chip facilitating further miniaturisation of small satellites. The paper is concerned with a communication system, specifically designed to meet the needs of a single-chip onboard computer - a simplified yet reliable and automated standalone alternative software implementation of the Consultative Committee of Space Data Systems (CCSDS) protocol communicating with a standard universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter (UART) peripheral. Details of the design and implementation stages of a CCSDS package coded in the language C are given. A thin hardware layer is described which translates the asynchronous UART stream into a CCSDS compliant synchronous stream. Synthesis results targeted at Actel FPGAs are presented taking into account single event upset tolerant coding styles

Inflammation-induced mitochondrial and metabolic disturbances in sensory neurons control the switch from acute to chronic pain

    Get PDF
Pain often persists in patients with an inflammatory disease, even when inflammation has subsided. The molecular mechanisms leading to this failure in pain resolution and the transition to chronic pain are poorly understood. Mitochondrial dysfunction in sensory neurons links to chronic pain, but its role in resolution of inflammatory pain is unclear. Transient inflammation causes neuronal plasticity, called hyperalgesic priming, which impairs resolution of pain induced by a subsequent inflammatory stimulus. We identify that hyperalgesic priming in mice increases the expression of a mitochondrial protein (ATPSc-KMT) and causes mitochondrial and metabolic disturbances in sensory neurons. Inhibition of mitochondrial respiration, knockdown of ATPSCKMT expression, or supplementation of the affected metabolite is sufficient to restore resolution of inflammatory pain and prevents chronic pain development. Thus, inflammation-induced mitochondrial-dependent disturbances in sensory neurons predispose to a failure in resolution of inflammatory pain and development of chronic pain

This paper presents a methodology and a tool set which implements automated generation of moderate-size blocks of customized intellectual property (IP), thus effectively reusing prior work and minimizing the labor intensive, error-prone parts of the design process. Customization of components allows for optimization for smaller area and lower power consumption, which is an important factor given the limitations of resources available in radiation-hardened devices. The effects of variations in HDL coding style on the efficiency of synthesized code for various commercial synthesis tools are also discussed
