    Logarithmic current fluctuations in non-equilibrium quantum spin chains

    We study zero-temperature quantum spin chains which are characterized by a non-vanishing current. For the XX model starting from the initial state |... + + + - - - ...> we derive an exact expression for the variance of the total spin current. We show that asymptotically the variance exhibits an anomalously slow logarithmic growth; we also extract the sub-leading constant term. We then argue that the logarithmic growth remains valid for the XXZ model in the critical region.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, minor alteration

    On the locality of the no hair conjection and the measure of the universe

    The reently proposed proof by Jensen and Stein-Schabes of the No Hair Theorem for inhomogeneous spacetimes is analyzed, putting a special emphasis on the asymptotic behavior of the shear and curvature. It is concluded that the theorem only holds locally, and the minimum size a region should be is estimated in order for it to inflate. The assumptions used in the theorem are discussed in detail. The last section speculates about the possible measure of the set of spacetimes that would undergo inflation

    Consider the difference equation xk+1=xkeα−xn−dx_{k+1}=x_k e^{\alpha-x_{n-d}} where α\alpha is a positive parameter and d is a non-negative integer. The case d = 0 was introduced by W.E. Ricker in 1954. For the delayed version d >= 1 of the equation S. Levin and R. May conjectured in 1976 that local stability of the nontrivial equilibrium implies its global stability.     Influence of salicylic acid on phytochelatin synthesis in Zea mays during Cd stress

    Abstract: Presoaking maize (Zea mays) seeds in salicylic acid (SA) reduces damage caused by cadmium. In the present work the possible role of phytochelatins (PCs) in SA-mediated protection against Cd toxicity was investigated. Seeds were presoaked in 0.5 mM SA, and seedlings were grown in hydroponic solution containing 0, 0.01, 0.015, or 0.025 mM Cd. Treatment with Cd increased the PC levels in maize roots, but only slight changes were observed in the leaves. Long-term exposure to Cd decreased the phytochelatin synthase (PCS) activity in the roots and led to an increase in PCS and glutathione reductase (GR) activities in maize leaves. Although presoaking seeds in SA solution before exposure to Cd may reduce the level of heavy metal injury and has an effect on the composition of individual PCs, this protection is not directly connected with the altered regulation of PCs

    Neogene fluvial landscape evolution in the hyperarid core of the Atacama Desert

    Dating of extensive alluvial fan surfaces and fluvial features in the hyperarid core of the Atacama Desert, Chile, using cosmogenic nuclides provides unrivalled insights about the onset and variability of aridity. The predominantly hyperarid conditions help to preserve the traces of episodic climatic and/or slow tectonic change. Utilizing single clast exposure dating with cosmogenic 10Be and 21Ne, we determine the termination of episodes of enhanced fluvial erosion and deposition occurring at ~19, ~14, ~9.5 Ma; large scale fluvial modification of the landscape had ceased by ~2–3 Ma. The presence of clasts that record pre-Miocene exposure ages (~28 Ma and ~34 Ma) require stagnant landscape development during the Oligocene. Our data implies an early onset of (hyper-) aridity in the core region of the Atacama Desert, interrupted by wetter but probably still arid periods. The apparent conflict with interpretation that favour a later onset of (hyper-) aridity can be reconciled when the climatic gradients within the Atacama Desert are considered

    Convergence and monotonicity of the hormone levels in a hormone-based content delivery system

    The practical significance of bio-inspired, self-organising methods is rapidly increasing due to their robustness, adaptability and capability of handling complex tasks in a dynamically changing environment. Our aim is to examine an artificial hormone system that was introduced in order to deliver multimedia content in dynamic networks. The artificial hormone algorithm proved to be an efficient approach to solve the problem during the experimental evaluations. In this paper we focus on the theoretical foundation of its goodness. We show that the hormone levels converge to a limit at each node in the typical cases. We form a series of theorems on convergence with different conditions which are built on each other by starting with a specific base case and then we consider more general, practically relevant cases. The theorems are proved by exploiting the analogy between the Markov chains and the artificial hormone system. We examine spatial and temporal monotonicity of the hormone levels as well and give sufficient conditions on monotonic increase
