Waterlogging tolerance evaluation of fifteen poplar clones cultivated in the Jianghan Plain of China
To provide references for poplar cultivation in waterlogged prone area of Jianghan Plain of China, the waterlogging tolerance of 15 poplar clones widely cultivated in these areas were evaluated based on their responses to 45-day waterlogging stress followed by 15-day drainage recovery in morphology, growth, biomass accumulation, leaf gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters. The results showed that the normal watered seedlings (CK) of the 15 clones grew vigorously during the experiment, and no defoliation and death occurred. For the seedlings under waterlogging treatment (water 10 cm above the soil surface), its morphology changed markedly, including slowing growth, chlorosis and abscission of leaves, development of hypertrophied lenticels and adventitious roots etc. Waterlogging stress significantly inhibited the seedling growth of height and ground diameter, biomass accumulation, as well as leaf gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters of the 15 clones with varying degrees. The net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), transpiration rate (Tr), intercellular CO2 concentration/ environmental CO2 concentration (Ci/Ca), variable fluorescence (Fv), variable fluorescence/ initial fluorescence (Fv/Fo) and PS â
Ą primary light energy conversion efficiency (Fv/Fm) decreased gradually with the prolonged waterlogging, and reached their bottom on day 45. During the terminal recovery stage, the leaf gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters of the most clones increased, but their recovery abilities were significantly different. At the end of the experiment, the highest survival rates (100%) were observed in DHY, HS-1, HS-2, I-72, I-69, I-63 and NL-895, and the lowest (zero) occurred in XYY. Survival rates of the other clones ranged from 33.33% to 83.33%. Both results of cluster analysis and membership function analysis showed that HS-1, I-69, DHY, NL-895 and HS-2 had the strongest waterlogging tolerance, XYY and HBY were the worst, and the other clones were moderate. These results would provide guidance not only for the selection of cultivated varieties in Jianghan Plain, but also for the selection of hybrid parents for waterlogging resistance breeding
Changes of Intracellular Porphyrin, Reactive Oxygen Species, and Fatty Acids Profiles During Inactivation of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus by Antimicrobial Blue Light
Antimicrobial blue light (aBL) has attracted increasing interest for its antimicrobial properties. However, the underlying bactericidal mechanism has not yet been verified. One hypothesis is that aBL causes the excitation of intracellular chromophores; leading to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the resultant oxidization of various biomolecules. Thus, monitoring the levels of redox-sensitive intracellular biomolecules such as coproporphyrins, as well as singlet oxygen and various ROS may help to uncover the physiological changes induced by aBL and aid in establishing the underlying mechanism of action. Furthermore, the identification of novel targets of ROS, such as fatty acids, is of potential significance from a therapeutic perspective. In this study, we sought to investigate the molecular impact of aBL treatment on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The results showed that aBL (5â80 J/cm2) exhibited a bactericidal effect on MRSA, and almost no bacteria survived when 80 J/cm2 had been delivered. Further studies revealed that the concentrations of certain intracellular molecules varied in response to aBL irradiation. Coproporphyrin levels were found to decrease gradually, while ROS levels increased rapidly. Moreover, imaging revealed the emergence and increase of singlet oxygen molecules. Concomitantly, the lipid peroxidation product malondialdehyde (MDA) increased in abundance and intracellular K+ leakage was observed, indicating permeability of the cell membrane. Atomic force microscopy showed that the cell surface exhibited a coarse appearance. Finally, fatty acid profiles at different illumination levels were monitored by GC-MS. The relative amounts of three unsaturated fatty acids (C16:1, C20:1, and C20:4) were decreased in response to aBL irradiation, which likely played a key role in the aforementioned membrane injuries. Collectively, these data suggest that the cell membrane is a major target of ROS during aBL irradiation, causing alterations to membrane lipid profiles, and in particular to the unsaturated fatty acid component
Application of IMVR Convolutional Neural Networks to Classification of Land Use Remote Sensing Datasets
Despite extensive research, remote sensing image classification remains a challenging issue within the field of remote sensing image analysis. Achieving a balance between classification accuracy and computational efficiency remains challenging, as traditional methods often face difficulties in attaining both high speed and precision simultaneously. To tackle this dilemma, we propose a method named IMVR which significantly reduces the computational burden while maintaining validity. This method enhances the richness and accuracy of high-dimensional feature representations through its output. Extensive experiments are conducted on the UC Merced Land-Use Dataset to demonstrate that our method can substantially improve classification performance and efficiency in comparison to traditional methods
Association between the C-reactive protein/albumin ratio and mortality in older Japanese patients with dysphagia
BackgroundC-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio (CRP/ALB) has been proven to represent a biomarker for predicting prognosis in many groups of patients with severe diseases. However, few studies have investigated the association between CRP/ALB and mortality in Japan older people with dysphagia patients.ObjectiveThis retrospective cohort study aimed to assess the prognostic value of C-reactive protein/albumin ratio (CAR) in older Japanese patients with dysphagia.MethodsWe analyzed data from 253 patients diagnosed with dysphagia at a single center between January 2014 and January 2017. Cox regression analysis was used to compare the mortality rates across the CAR tertiles. Subgroup analyses were conducted, and KaplanâMeier curves were used to determine the median survival times.ResultsThe study included 154 female and 99 male patients, with a median age of 83 years. After adjusting for all covariates, the multivariable Cox regression analysis revealed a significant association between increasing CAR (HR = 1.19, 95% CI: 1.03â1.37, P = 0.022) and the risk of mortality. Compared to the reference group T1 (< 0.149), the adjusted hazard ratios for T2 (0.149â0.815) and T3 (> 0.815) were 1.75 (95% CI: 1.07â2.87, P = 0.027) and 2.15 (95% CI: 1.34â3.46, P = 0.002), respectively. KaplanâMeier curves indicated median survival times of 864, 371, and 223 days for T1, T2, and T3, respectively.ConclusionThe C-reactive protein/albumin ratio was positively related to mortality in Japan older people with dysphagia patients. There was no interaction for the subgroup analysis. The result was stable
Distribution of self-reported borderline personality disorder traits symptoms in a large-scale clinical population
IntroductionBorderline Personality Disorder (BPD) traits play a crucial role in the prognosis of psychiatric disorders, as well as in assessing risks associated with negativity and impulsivity. However, there is a lack of data regarding the distribution characteristics of BPD traits and symptoms within clinical populations.MethodsA total of 3015 participants (1321 males, 1694 females) were consecutively sampled from outpatients at the psychiatric and psycho-counseling clinics at the Shanghai Mental Health Center. BPD symptoms were assessed using a self-reported personality diagnostic questionnaire. Having BPD traits is defined as having five or more positive items in self-reported BPD characteristics. Participants were stratified into male and female groups, age groups, and diagnostic groups (schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders). Exploratory factor analysis using principal components analysis was conducted. Three factors were identified: âF1: Affective Instability and Impulsivityâ, âF2: Interpersonal Unstable and Extreme Reactionsâ, and âF3: Identity Disturbanceâ.ResultsAmong 3015 participants, 45.9% of the patients self-reported BPD traits. Comparing of male and female patients, there was no statistically significant difference in the occurrence rate of BPD traits (Ï2 = 1.835, p=0.176). However, in terms of symptoms, female patients reported more symptoms than male patients. Female patients also exhibited more pronounced features on F2 compared to male patients (t =-1.972, p=0.049). There is a general decrease in BPD traits, symptoms, and factors with increasing age. Specifically, the proportion of positive BPD traits is approximately halved before the age of 30 and decreases to around one-third after the age of 30. BPD traits were most common in the Mood Disorders group at 55.7%, followed by the Anxiety Disorders group at 44.4%, and Schizophrenia group at 41.5% (Ï2 = 38.084, p<0.001).DiscussionOur study revealed the pervasive presence of BPD traits and symptoms among psychiatric outpatients, exhibiting distinctive distributions across gender, age, and diagnostic categories. These findings emphasize the significance of identifying and addressing BPD pathology in the clinical care of psychiatric outpatients
Psychiatric emergency department visits during the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic
BackgroundPrevious research has demonstrated the negative impact of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on mental health.AimsTo examine changes in the Chinese psychiatric emergency department (PED) visits for mental health crises that occurred during the pandemic.MethodsBefore and during the COVID-19 pandemic, PED visit counts from the largest psychiatric hospital in China between 2018 and 2020 were investigated. Electronic medical records of 2020 PED visits were extracted during the COVID-19 pandemic period and compared for the same period of 2018 and 2019.ResultsOverall, PED visits per year increased from 1,767 in 2018 to 2210 (an increase of 25.1%) in 2019 and 2,648 (an increase of 49.9%) in 2020. Compared with 2 years before the epidemic, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the proportion of PED visits among patients with stress disorders, sleep disorders, and anxiety disorders increased significantly. In terms of the distribution of demographic characteristics, age shows a younger trend, while the gender difference is not significant.ConclusionThese findings suggest that PED care-seeking increases during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the need to integrate mental health services for patients with stress, sleep, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorders during public health crises

Comparison of Therapeutic Effects between Pulsed and Continuous Wave 810-nm Wavelength Laser Irradiation for Traumatic Brain Injury in Mice
Background and Objective
Transcranial low-level laser therapy (LLLT) using near-infrared light can efficiently penetrate through the scalp and skull and could allow non-invasive treatment for traumatic brain injury (TBI). In the present study, we compared the therapeutic effect using 810-nm wavelength laser light in continuous and pulsed wave modes in a mouse model of TBI.
Study Design/Materials and Methods
TBI was induced by a controlled cortical-impact device and 4-hours post-TBI 1-group received a sham treatment and 3-groups received a single exposure to transcranial LLLT, either continuous wave or pulsed at 10-Hz or 100-Hz with a 50% duty cycle. An 810-nm Ga-Al-As diode laser delivered a spot with diameter of 1-cm onto the injured head with a power density of 50-mW/cm2 for 12-minutes giving a fluence of 36-J/cm2. Neurological severity score (NSS) and body weight were measured up to 4 weeks. Mice were sacrificed at 2, 15 and 28 days post-TBI and the lesion size was histologically analyzed. The quantity of ATP production in the brain tissue was determined immediately after laser irradiation. We examined the role of LLLT on the psychological state of the mice at 1 day and 4 weeks after TBI using tail suspension test and forced swim test.
Results
The 810-nm laser pulsed at 10-Hz was the most effective judged by improvement in NSS and body weight although the other laser regimens were also effective. The brain lesion volume of mice treated with 10-Hz pulsed-laser irradiation was significantly lower than control group at 15-days and 4-weeks post-TBI. Moreover, we found an antidepressant effect of LLLT at 4-weeks as shown by forced swim and tail suspension tests.
Conclusion
The therapeutic effect of LLLT for TBI with an 810-nm laser was more effective at 10-Hz pulse frequency than at CW and 100-Hz. This finding may provide a new insight into biological mechanisms of LLLT.National Institutes of Health (U.S.) (NIH grant R01AI050875)Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology (DAMD17-02-2-0006)United States. Experimental and Analytical Investigation on Flexural Behavior of High-Strength Steel-Concrete Composite Beams
This research investigated the flexural behavior of high-strength steel (HSS)âconcrete composite beams. The effect of concrete strength on the load-deflection behavior, flexural capacity, and ductility of HSSâconcrete composite beams was investigated. Four full-scale HSSâconcrete composite beam specimens were tested under static load. The test results demonstrate that the failure mode of HSSâconcrete composite beams is flexural failure of the steel member and compression fracture of concrete at mid-span. The HSSâconcrete composite beam exhibits good mechanical performance and deformation behavior. The ultimate bending strength and ductility of HSSâconcrete composite beams were improved with the increased concrete strength. The theoretical results demonstrate that the simplified plastic method overestimates the ultimate bending strength of HSSâconcrete composite beams. The main reason is that only a small part of the steel beam bottom shows plastic strengthening, which is not enough to make up for the strength loss caused by the steel near the neutral axis failure to yield and the relative interface slip. The nonlinear method based on material constitutive model could predict the load-bearing capacity accurately. After analyzing the ultimate bending capacity of 192 sample beams, the simplified plastic method was modified, and the theoretical method for ultimate bearing capacity of HSSâconcrete composite beams was proposed
Quantitative Representation of Water Quality Biotoxicity by Algal Photosynthetic Inhibition
The method based on the photosynthetic inhibition effect of algae offers the advantages of swift response and straightforward measurement. Nonetheless, this effect is influenced by both the environment and the state of the algae themselves. Additionally, a single parameter is vulnerable to uncertainties, rendering the measurement accuracy and stability inadequate. This paper employed currently utilized photosynthetic fluorescence parameters, including Fv/Fm(maximum photochemical quantum yield), Performance Indicator (PIabs), Comprehensive Parameter Index (CPI) and Performance Index of Comprehensive Toxicity Effect (PIcte), as quantitative toxicity characteristic parameters. The paper compared the univariate curve fitting results with the multivariate data-driven model results and investigated the effectiveness of Back Propagation(BP) Neural Network and Support Vector Machine for Regression (SVR) models to enhance the accuracy and stability of toxicity detection. Using Dichlorophenyl Dimethylurea (DCMU) samples as an example, the mean Relative Root Mean Square Error (RRMSE) corresponding to the optimal parameter PIcte for the dose-effect curve fitting was 1.246 in the concentration range of 1.25â200 ”g/L. On the other hand, the mean RRMSEs corresponding to the results of the BP neural network and SVR models were 0.506 and 0.474, respectively. Notably, BP neural network exhibited excellent prediction accuracy in the medium-high concentration range of 7.5â200 ”g/L, with a mean RRSME of only 0.056. Regarding the stability of the results, the mean Relative Standard Deviation (RSD) of the univariate dose-effect curve results was 15.1% within the concentration range of 50â200 ”g/L. In contrast, the mean RSDs for both BP neural network and SVR results were less than 5%. In the concentration range of 1.25â200 ”g/L, the mean RSDs were 6.1% and 16.5%, with the BP neural network performing well. The experimental results of Atrazine were analyzed to further validate the effectiveness of the BP neural network in improving the accuracy and stability of results. These findings provided valuable insights for the development of biotoxicity detection by using the algae photosynthetic inhibition method
