Elastically restrained Bernoulli-Euler beams applied to rotary machinery modelling
Facing the lateral vibration problem of a machine rotor as a beam on elastic supports in bending, the authors deal with the free vibration of elastically restrained Bernoulli-Euler beams carrying a finite number of concentrated elements along their length. Based on Rayleigh's quotient, an iterative strategy is developed to find the approximated torsional stiffness coefficients, which allows the reconciliation between the theoretical model results and the experimental ones, obtained through impact tests. The mentioned algorithm treats the vibration of continuous beams under a determined set of boundary and continuity conditions, including different torsional stiffness coefficients and the effect of attached concentrated masses and rotational inertias, not only in the energetic terms of the Rayleigh's quotient but also on the mode shapes, considering the shape functions defined in branches. Several loading cases are examined and examples are given to illustrate the validity of the model and accuracy of the obtained natural frequencies
A model updating technique based on FRFs for damped structures
Model updating methods often neglect that in fact all physical structures are damped. Such simplification relies on the structural modelling approach, although it compromises the accuracy of the predictions of the structural dynamic behaviour. In the present work, the authors address the problem of finite element (FE) model updating based on measured frequency response functions (FRFs), considering damping. The proposed procedure is based upon the complex experimental data, which contains information related to the damped FE model parameters and presents the advantage of requiring no prior knowledge about the damping matrix structure or its content, only demanding the definition of the damping type. Numerical simulations are performed in order to establish the applicability of the proposed damped FE model updating technique and its results are discussed in terms of the correlation between the simulated experimental complex FRFs and the ones obtained from the updated FE model
Kinematical changes in swimming front crawl and breaststroke with the AquaTrainerÂź snorkel
The aim of the present study was to assess the
kinematical changes when swimming maximal bouts in
Front Crawl and Breaststroke with the AquaTrainerÂź snorkel.
Thirteen male swimmers (7 at Breaststroke and 6 at
Front Crawl) of national level performed randomly two
maximal bouts of 100-m swims: one bout using the Aqua-
TrainerÂź snorkel (snorkel swim) and another one without
the snorkel (free swim). The swims were videotaped in sagital
plane with a pair of cameras providing 2D kinematics
evaluation. The following measures were assessed: swimming
performance (T100), stroke cycle period (P), stroke
rate (SR), stroke length (SL), swimming velocity (v),
swimming eYciency as estimated by the stroke index (SI),
speed Xuctuation (dv) and the mathematical characterisation
of dv. T100 was signiWcantly higher when swimming
with the snorkel than in free swimming at Breaststroke
(= 6.26%) and at Front Crawl (= 4.75%). P, SR and
SL, as well as SI and dv did not present signiWcant diVerences.
The main Wnding of the study was that changes in the
swimming velocity imposed by the use of the AquatrainerÂź
do not seem due to changes in general kinematics or
swimming eYcienc
A Bayesian approach to predict the structural responses of FGM plates with uncertain parameters
The authors wish to acknowledge the financial support given by FCT/MEC through Projects: UNIDEMI UID/EMS/00667/2019 and CEMAPRE UID/MULTI/00491/2019. The first author also wishes to thank the support of Project IPL/2019/MOCHVar/ISEL.The increasing complexity associated to both structures and materials have been posing a continuous demand for numerical tools that allow predicting their behavior and simultaneously consider the influence of the uncertainty associated to multiple parameters. This work presents a Bayesian approach to characterize the influence of each material phase's properties and the volume fraction parameters in the behavior of biphasic functionally graded plates.publishersversionpublishe
The gliding phase in swimming: the effect of water depth
Aiming to achieve higher performances, swimmers
should maximize each component of swimming races. During
starts and turns, the gliding phase represents a determinant part of these
race components. Thus, the depth position allowing minimizing the hydrodynamic
drag force represents an important concern in swimming
research. The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of depth on
drag during the underwater gliding, using computational fluid dynamic

Determinouse
a duração absoluta do teste (T100, s), a duração absoluta do ciclo gestual (Durciclo), a frequĂȘncia ciclo
Flexural behaviour of hybrid FRC-GFRP/PUR sandwich panels
The present work has been developed in the scope of the research project ââEasyfloor â Development of composite sandwich panels for building floor rehabilitationâ. This project aims at developing a hybrid sandwich panel, constituting an alternative construction system to conventional floor solutions, mainly for buildings rehabilitation. The developed hybrid sandwich panel is composed of a top face layer of steel fibre reinforced self-compacting concrete (FRC), a core of polyurethane (PUR) closed-cell foam and a bottom face sheet and lateral webs of glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP). The composite (GFRP/PUR) is manufactured by pultrusion, and its cross-section includes a sheet of GFRP between the FRC and PUR. After the production of the composite part, fresh FRC is poured onto the FRP component to materialize the top face of the panel. Full-scale tests on the developed sandwich panels have been carried out to characterize their flexural behaviour. The experimental programme included flexural tests i) on single supported panels, ii) on two panels side adhesively bonded and iii) on single panels with different connection solutions to walls. The present work includes a detailed description of the developed panels and of the experimental programme. It also presents and discusses the relevant results. The observed performance of the tested specimens is critically analysed.FCT - Fundação para a CiĂȘncia e a Tecnologia (SFRH/BSAB/150266/2019
2-(4-MethylÂphenÂyl)-1H-anthraceno[1,2-d]imidazole-6,11-dione: a fluorescent chemosensor
In the title compound, C22H14N2O2, the five rings of the molÂecule are not coplanar. There is a significant twist between the four fused rings, which have a slightly arched conformation, and the pendant aromatic ring, as seen in the dihedral angle of 13.16â
(8)° between the anthraquinonic ring system and the pendant aromatic ring plane
