    Southward expansion: The myth of the West in the promotion of Florida, 1876–1900

    This article examines the ways in which promoters and developers of Florida, in the decades after Reconstruction, engaged with a popular myth of the West as a means of recasting and selling their state to prospective settlers in the North and Midwest. The myth envisaged a cherished region to the west where worthy Americans could migrate and achieve social and economic independence away from the crowded confines of the East, or Europe. According to state immigration agents, land-promoters and other booster writers, Florida, although a Southern ex-Confederate state, offered precisely these 'western' opportunities for those hard-working Northerners seeking land and an opening for agrarian prosperity. However, the myth, which posited that, in the west, an individual's labour and thrift were rewarded with social and economic improvement, meshed awkwardly with the contemporary emergence of Florida as a popular winter destination for wealthy tourists and invalids seeking leisure and healthfulness away from the North. Yet it also reflected and reinforced promotional notions of racial improvement which would occur with an influx of enterprising Anglo-Americans, who would effectively displace the state's large African American population.     Accurately quantifying the shape of birds’ eggs

    Describing the range of avian egg shapes quantitatively has long been recognized as difficult. A variety of approaches has been adopted, some of which aim to capture the shape accurately and some to provide intelligible indices of shape. The objectives here are to show that a (four‐parameter) method proposed by Preston (1953, The Auk, 70, 160) is the best option for quantifying egg shape, to provide and document an R program for applying this method to suitable photographs of eggs, to illustrate that intelligible shape indices can be derived from the summary this method provides, to review shape indices that have been proposed, and to report on the errors introduced using photographs of eggs at rest rather than horizontal

    Stricture and perforation of the esophagus: Overlooked threats in the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

    This study was undertaken to assess the frequency of significant esophageal involvement in the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES). In a consecutive series of 24 patients with this disease, 9 (37%) showed endoscopic evidence of acid-induced esophageal lesions ranging from erosive inflammation to ulceration with massive bleeding, severe stricture formation, and perforation. In 3 cases, pronounced esophagitis was known 1–5 years before the underlying disease was diagnosed. Severe esophageal complications developed despite treatment with antisecretory drugs. It is emphasized that the best way to limit such complications is by excision of the underlying gastrin-secreting tumor(s) when possible . Nous avons entrepris cette Ă©tude pour Ă©tablir la frĂ©quence de participation oesophagienne dans le syndrome de Zollinger-Ellison. Pour une sĂ©rie de 24 patients prĂ©sentant cette maladie, 9 (37%) avaient Ă  l'endoscopie des lĂ©sions oesophagiennes dues Ă  l'aciditĂ© allant de l'Ă©rosion inflammatoire Ă  l'ulcĂ©ration avec saignement important, stĂ©nose sĂ©vĂšre, et perforation. Dans 3 cas, une oesophagite importante Ă©tait connue 1–5 ans avant que la maladie sous-jacente soit diagnostiquĂ©e. Des complications oesophagiennes sĂ©vĂšres se sont produites malgrĂ© le traitement antisĂ©crĂ©toire. Nous insistons sur le fait que le meilleur moyen de limiter ces complications est d'exciser chaque fois que possible la ou les tumeurs sous-jacentes sĂ©crĂ©tant la gastrine. El presente estudio fue emprendido con el propĂłsito de determinar la frecuencia de afecciĂłn ĂĄcido pĂ©ptica significativa del esĂłfago en pacientes con sĂ­ndrome de Zollinger-Ellison. En una serie de 24 pacientes consecutivos con esta enfermedad, 9 (37%) exhibieron evidencia endoscĂłpica de lesiones esofĂĄgicas inducidas por ĂĄcido, las cuales variaron entre inflamaciĂłn erosiva y ulceraciĂłn con sangrado masivo, estrechez severa, y perforaciĂłn. En 3 pacientes se conocĂ­a la existencia de esofagitis severa entre 1 y 5 años antes del diagnĂłstico de la enfermedad de base. Se desarrollaron graves complicaciones esofĂĄgicas a pesar del tratamiento con drogas antisecretorias en 3 pacientes.     A gamma- and X-ray detector for cryogenic, high magnetic field applications

    As part of an experiment to measure the spectrum of photons emitted in beta-decay of the free neutron, we developed and operated a detector consisting of 12 bismuth germanate (BGO) crystals coupled to avalanche photodiodes (APDs). The detector was operated near liquid nitrogen temperature in the bore of a superconducting magnet and registered photons with energies from 5 keV to 1000 keV. To enlarge the detection range, we also directly detected soft X-rays with energies between 0.2 keV and 20 keV with three large area APDs. The construction and operation of the detector is presented, as well as information on operation of APDs at cryogenic temperatures

    Radiative ÎČ decay of the free neutron

    The theory of quantum electrodynamics predicts that the ÎČ decay of the neutron into a proton, electron, and antineutrino is accompanied by a continuous spectrum of emitted photons described as inner bremsstrahlung. While this phenomenon has been observed in nuclear ÎČ decay and electron-capture decay for many years, it has only been recently observed in free-neutron decay. We present a detailed discussion of an experiment in which the radiative decay mode of the free neutron was observed. In this experiment, the branching ratio for this rare decay was determined by recording photons that were correlated with both the electron and proton emitted in neutron decay. We determined the branching ratio for photons with energy between 15 and 340 keV to be (3.09±0.32)×10-3 (68% level of confidence), where the uncertainty is dominated by systematic effects. This value for the branching ratio is consistent with theoretical predictions. The characteristic energy spectrum of the radiated photons, which differs from the uncorrelated background spectrum, is also consistent with the theoretical spectrum

    Asteroseismology of Eclipsing Binary Stars in the Kepler Era

    Eclipsing binary stars have long served as benchmark systems to measure fundamental stellar properties. In the past few decades, asteroseismology - the study of stellar pulsations - has emerged as a new powerful tool to study the structure and evolution of stars across the HR diagram. Pulsating stars in eclipsing binary systems are particularly valuable since fundamental properties (such as radii and masses) can determined using two independent techniques. Furthermore, independently measured properties from binary orbits can be used to improve asteroseismic modeling for pulsating stars in which mode identifications are not straightforward. This contribution provides a review of asteroseismic detections in eclipsing binary stars, with a focus on space-based missions such as CoRoT and Kepler, and empirical tests of asteroseismic scaling relations for stochastic ("solar-like") oscillations.Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables; Proceedings of the AAS topical conference "Giants of Eclipse" (AASTCS-3), July 28 - August 2 2013, Monterey, C

We present findings from an academic partnership approach to post-project evaluation, based on successive MSc research projects on restored large wood in the Loddon catchment, UK. Field and modelling data reveal: (i) key differences in large wood features between restored and natural reaches; (ii) increased hydraulic retention and changes to mesohabitats associated with large wood; (iii) differences in macroinvertebrate community composition around large wood but a lack of site-level effects; (iv) interactions between macrophytes and large wood that may be specific to restored reaches; (v) a need for further field and modelling studies to inform the accurate representation of large wood in hydraulic models. Some key challenges in partnership working are identified to aid planning and effectiveness of future collaborations

    A terminal assessment of stages theory : introducing a dynamic states approach to entrepreneurship

    Stages of Growth models were the most frequent theoretical approach to understanding entrepreneurial business growth from 1962 to 2006; they built on the growth imperative and developmental models of that time. An analysis of the universe of such models (N=104) published in the management literature shows no consensus on basic constructs of the approach, nor is there any empirical confirmations of stages theory. However, by changing two propositions of the stages models, a new dynamic states approach is derived. The dynamic states approach has far greater explanatory power than its precursor, and is compatible with leading edge research in entrepreneurship

    Asteroseismic diagrams from a survey of solar-like oscillations with Kepler

    Photometric observations made by the NASA Kepler Mission have led to a dramatic increase in the number of main-sequence and subgiant stars with detected solar-like oscillations. We present an ensemble asteroseismic analysis of 76 solar-type stars. Using frequencies determined from the Kepler time-series photometry, we have measured three asteroseismic parameters that characterize the oscillations: the large frequency separation (\Delta \nu), the small frequency separation between modes of l=0 and l=2 (\delta \nu_02), and the dimensionless offset (\epsilon). These measurements allow us to construct asteroseismic diagrams, namely the so-called C-D diagram of \delta \nu_02 versus \Delta \nu, and the recently re-introduced {\epsilon} diagram. We compare the Kepler results with previously observed solar-type stars and with theoretical models. The positions of stars in these diagrams places constraints on their masses and ages. Additionally, we confirm the observational relationship between {\epsilon} and T_eff that allows for the unambiguous determination of radial order and should help resolve the problem of mode identification in F stars.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letter
