The Supernova-Gamma Ray Burst Connection
Supernovae 1998bw and its corresponding relativistically expanding radio
source are coincident with the \grb source GRB 980425. We show that of six
recent SN Ib/c for which an outburst epoch can be estimated with some
reliability, four have radio outbursts and all are correlated in time and space
with BATSE \grbs. The joint probability of all six correlations is
1.5. No such correlation exists for SN Ia and SN II. The \gr\
energy associated with the SN/GRB events is ergs if
emitted isotropically. Economy of hypotheses leads us to propose that all \grbs
are associated with supernovae and that the \grb events have a quasi-isotropic
component that cannot be observed at cosmological distances and a strongly
collimated and Doppler-boosted component that can only be seen if looking
nearly along the collimation axis. Such collimation requires a high rate of
occurrence perhaps consistent with a supernova rate. The collimated flow may be
generated by core collapse to produce rotating, magnetized neutron stars. All
core collapse events may produce such jets, but only the ones that occur in
supernovae with small or missing hydrogen envelopes, Type Ib or Ic, can
propagate into the interstellar medium and yield a visible \grb. We suggest
that asymmetries in line profiles and spectropolarimetry of SN II and SN Ib/c,
pulsar runaway velocities, soft \gr repeaters and \grbs are associated

The Status Costs Of Subordinate Cultural Capital: At-Home Fathers\u27 Collective Pursuit Of Cultural Legitimacy Through Capitalizing Consumption Practices
Consumer researchers have primarily conceptualized cultural capital either as an endowed stock of resources that tend to reproduce socioeconomic hierarchies among consumer collectivities or as constellations of knowledge and skill that consumers acquire by making identity investments in a given consumption field. These studies, however, have given scant attention to the theoretical distinction between dominant and subordinate forms of cultural capital, with the latter affording comparatively lower conversion rates for economic, social, and symbolic capital. To redress this oversight, this article presents a multimethod investigation of middle-class men who are performing the emergent gender role of at-home fatherhood. Our analysis profiles and theoretically elaborates upon a set of capitalizing consumption practices through which at-home fathers seek to enhance the conversion rates of their acquisitions of domesticated (and subordinate) cultural capital and to build greater cultural legitimacy for their marginalized gender identity
Discursivity, difference, and disruption: Genealogical reflections on the consumer culture theory heteroglossia
We offer a genealogical perspective on the reflexive critique that consumer culture theory (CCT) has institutionalized a hyperindividualizing, overly agentic, and sociologically impoverished mode of analysis that impedes systematic investigations into the historical, ideological, and sociological shaping of marketing, markets, and consumption systems. Our analysis shows that the CCT pioneers embraced the humanistic/experientialist discourse to carve out a disciplinary niche in a largely antagonistic marketing field. However, this original epistemological orientation has long given way to a multilayered CCT heteroglossia that features a broad range of theorizations integrating structural and agentic levels of analysis. We close with a discussion of how reflexive debates over CCT's supposed biases toward the agentic reproduce symbolic distinctions between North American and European scholarship styles and thus primarily reflect the institutional interests of those positioned in the Northern hemisphere. By destabilizing the northâsouth and centerâperiphery relations of power that have long-framed metropole social science constructions of the marginalized cultural âotherâ as an object of studyârather than as a producer of legitimate knowledge and theoryâthe CCT heteroglossia can be further diversified and enriched through a blending of historical, material, critical, and experiential perspectives. </jats:p

What motivates academic dishonesty in students? A reinforcement sensitivity theory explanation
BACKGROUND: Academic dishonesty (AD) is an increasing challenge for universities worldwide. The rise of the Internet has further increased opportunities for students to cheat.
AIMS: In this study, we investigate the role of personality traits defined within Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) as potential determinants of AD. RST defines behaviour as resulting from approach (Reward Interest/reactivity, goal-drive, and Impulsivity) and avoidance (behavioural inhibition and Fight-Flight-Freeze) motivations. We further consider the role of deep, surface, or achieving study motivations in mediating/moderating the relationship between personality and AD.
SAMPLE: A sample of UK undergraduates (NÂ =Â 240).
METHOD: All participants completed the RST Personality Questionnaire, a short-form version of the study process questionnaire and a measure of engagement in AD, its perceived prevalence, and seriousness.
RESULTS: Results showed that RST traits account for additional variance in AD. Mediation analysis suggested that GDP predicted dishonesty indirectly via a surface study approach while the indirect effect via deep study processes suggested dishonesty was not likely. Likelihood of engagement in AD was positively associated with personality traits reflecting Impulsivity and Fight-Flight-Freeze behaviours. Surface study motivation moderated the Impulsivity effect and achieving motivation the FFFS effect such that cheating was even more likely when high levels of these processes were used.
CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that motivational personality traits defined within RST can explain variance in the likelihood of engaging in dishonest academic behaviours

The Pim kinases control rapamycin-resistant T cell survival and activation
Although Pim-1 or Pim-2 can contribute to lymphoid transformation when overexpressed, the physiologic role of these kinases in the immune response is uncertain. We now report that T cells from Pim-1â/âPim-2â/â animals display an unexpected sensitivity to the immunosuppressant rapamycin. Cytokine-induced Pim-1 and Pim-2 promote the rapamycin-resistant survival of lymphocytes. The endogenous function of the Pim kinases was not restricted to the regulation of cell survival. Like the rapamycin target TOR, the Pim kinases also contribute to the regulation of lymphocyte growth and proliferation. Although rapamycin has a minimal effect on wild-type T cell expansion in vitro and in vivo, it completely suppresses the response of Pim-1â/âPim-2â/â cells. Thus, endogenous levels of the Pim kinases are required for T cells to mount an immune response in the presence of rapamycin. The existence of a rapamycin-insensitive pathway that regulates T cell growth and survival has important implications for understanding how rapamycin functions as an immunomodulatory drug and for the development of complementary immunotherapeutics

Dual Thermographic Monitoring of Ti-6Al-4V Cylinders During Direct Laser Deposition
Understanding the thermal phenomena associated with Direct Laser Deposition (DLD) is
necessary to begin manipulating fabricated part properties. In this study, a thermally monitored
Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS) system is used with time-invariant (uncontrolled) build
parameters to construct Ti-6Al-4V cylinders with two different build paths. Both paths utilize a
circular contour with serpentine hatch fill; however, successive layer patterns are varied and the
effects compared between 90° and 120° angular pattern shifts. During fabrication, the partâs
thermal history and melt pool temperature are recorded via an in-chamber infrared (IR) camera
and a dual-wavelength (DW) pyrometer, respectively. These tools are used for non-destructive
thermographic inspection (NTI) of the part to ensure target quality and/or microstructure. A
unique calibration method for the IR camera utilizing the DW pyrometer data is presented and a
calibration correction factor was utilized for high temperature ranges. The melt pool was found
to be 40-50% superheated reaching temperatures up to 2500 ÂșC at times. Temperature
characteristics of two different layers were compared for different hatching patters, and the
results show that for a given point in time, maximum temperatures can vary based on laser raster.
Temperature gradients varied and peaked at about 1000 ÂșC/mm along the diameter of the small
rods. This can lead to anisotropy in microstructural and mechanical properties allowing for
unique property growth per build path. Cooling rates within the melt pool appear to increase as
maximum melt pool temperature increases, for instance, from 16,000 ÂșC/s â 41,000 ÂșC/s.Mechanical Engineerin
