    Spillway design floods for small dams in rural Missouri

Two talks were also presented. Student supported: 1 Master's Student, Training for 200 Undergraduates and 25 Graduate Students.At present, 1970, over 1500 small dams exist within the boundaries of the state of Missouri. Estimates indicate the number is growing at the rate of one hundred to two hundred per year. The main factor in possible failure of these existing dams is in an inadequate spillway resulting from poor hydraulic practice and or lack of accurate hydrologic design information. This report presents the result of a state wide analysis of all existing hydrologic data for rural watersheds less than twenty square miles. The results are presented in nomograph form for the 25 and 50 year frequency floods. The report also contains equations for other frequencies at two accuracy levels. The results of this investigation should provide designers of spillways, culverts and bridges with the latest hydrologic flood frequency data for small rural Missouri watersheds.Project # A-025-MO Agreement # 14-31-0001-302

    Reorganization of lipid domain structure in membranes by a transmembrane peptide: an ESR spin label study on the effect of the Escherichia coli outer membrane protein A signal peptide on the fluid lipid domain connectivity in binary mixtures of dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine and distearoyl phosphatidylcholine

    The effect of a transmembrane peptide on the domain structure of a two-component, two-phase lipid bilayer composed of dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) and distearoyl phosphatidylcholine (DSPC) was examined by spin label electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The peptide, pOmpA, is the hydrophobic, 25-residue signal sequence of the outer membrane protein A from Escherichia coli. Nitroxide derivatives of the phospholipid DSPC, 16-DSPCSL, and of the pOmpA signal peptide, pOmpA-IASL, were used as probes. The first-derivative lineshapes of the ESR spectra were analyzed using a normalized intensity ratio, R, that gives information on the average sizes of the disconnected fluid domains and their point of connectivity (Sankaram, M.B., D. Marsh, and T.E. Thompson. 1992. Biophys. J. 63:340–349). In the absence of the peptide, the number of fluid lipid domains does not vary with the fraction of lipid that is in the fluid phase, and phase conversion is accomplished solely by changes in the domain size. The phase boundaries of the lipid mixture remain largely unchanged by the presence of the peptide at mole fractions up to 0.02, but both the size and number of the fluid domains is changed, and the point at which they become connected is shifted to lower fractions of the fluid phase. In addition, the number of domains in the presence of the peptide no longer remains constant but increases from a domain density at low fractions of the fluid phase that is much lower than that in the absence of peptide to one that is comparable to the natural state in the absence of peptide at the point of domain connectivity. A simple model is presented for the process of domain fission, where the latter is determined by a balance between the effects of peptide concentration in the fluid domains, the line tension at the domain boundaries, and the distributional entropy of the domains

    Among the deformation features produced in Christchurch by the September 4th Darfield Earthquake were numerous and widespread “sand volcanoes”. Most of these structures occurred in urban settings and “erupted” through a hardened surface of concrete or tarseal, or soil. Sand volcanoes were also widespread in the Avon‐ Heathcote Estuary and offered an excellent opportunity to readily examine shallow subsurface profiles and as such the potential appearance of such structures in the rock record

    Solar Stereoscopy with STEREO/EUVI A and B spacecraft from small (6 deg) to large (170 deg) spacecraft separation angles

    We performed for the first time stereoscopic triangulation of coronal loops in active regions over the entire range of spacecraft separation angles (αsep≈6∘,43∘,89∘,127∘\alpha_{sep}\approx 6^\circ, 43^\circ, 89^\circ, 127^\circ, and 170∘170^\circ). The accuracy of stereoscopic correlation depends mostly on the viewing angle with respect to the solar surface for each spacecraft, which affects the stereoscopic correspondence identification of loops in image pairs. From a simple theoretical model we predict an optimum range of αsep≈22∘−125∘\alpha_{sep} \approx 22^\circ-125^\circ, which is also experimentally confirmed. The best accuracy is generally obtained when an active region passes the central meridian (viewed from Earth), which yields a symmetric view for both STEREO spacecraft and causes minimum horizontal foreshortening. For the extended angular range of αsep≈6∘−127∘\alpha_{sep}\approx 6^\circ-127^{\circ} we find a mean 3D misalignment angle of ÎŒPF≈21∘−39∘\mu_{PF} \approx 21^\circ-39^\circ of stereoscopically triangulated loops with magnetic potential field models, and ÎŒFFF≈15∘−21∘\mu_{FFF} \approx 15^\circ-21^\circ for a force-free field model, which is partly caused by stereoscopic uncertainties ÎŒSE≈9∘\mu_{SE} \approx 9^\circ. We predict optimum conditions for solar stereoscopy during the time intervals of 2012--2014, 2016--2017, and 2021--2023.Comment: Solar Physics, (in press), 22 pages, 9 figure

    High frequency oscillations during magnetar flares

    The recent discovery of high frequency oscillations during giant flares from the Soft Gamma Repeaters SGR 1806-20 and SGR 1900+14 may be the first direct detection of vibrations in a neutron star crust. If this interpretation is correct it offers a novel means of testing the neutron star equation of state, crustal breaking strain, and magnetic field configuration. We review the observational data on the magnetar oscillations, including new timing analysis of the SGR 1806-20 giant flare using data from the Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) and the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE).     SNX27 and SORLA interact to reduce amyloidogenic subcellular distribution and processing of amyloid precursor protein

    Proteolytic generation of amyloidogenic amyloid {beta} (A{beta}) fragments from the amyloid precursor protein (APP) significantly contributes to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although amyloidogenic APP proteolysis can be affected by trafficking through genetically associated AD components such as SORLA, how SORLA functionally interacts with other trafficking components is yet unclear. Here, we report that SNX27, an endosomal trafficking/recycling factor and a negative regulator of the {gamma}-secretase complex, binds to the SORLA cytosolic tail to form a ternary complex with APP. SNX27 enhances cell surface SORLA and APP levels in human cell lines and mouse primary neurons, and depletion of SNX27 or SORLA reduces APP endosome-to-cell surface recycling kinetics. SNX27 overexpression enhances the generation of cell surface APP cleavage products such as soluble alpha-APP C-terminal fragment (CTF{alpha}) in a SORLA-dependent manner. SORLA-mediated A{beta} reduction is attenuated by downregulation of SNX27. This indicates that an SNX27/SORLA complex functionally interacts to limit APP distribution to amyloidogenic compartments, forming a non-amyloidogenic shunt to promote APP recycling to the cell surface

    Multiple Extremal Eigenpairs by the Power Method

    We report the production and benchmarking of several refinements of the power method that enable the computation of multiple extremal eigenpairs of very large matrices. In these refinements we used an observation by Booth that has made possible the calculation of up to the 10th^{th} eigenpair for simple test problems simulating the transport of neutrons in the steady state of a nuclear reactor. Here, we summarize our techniques and efforts to-date on determining mainly just the two largest or two smallest eigenpairs. To illustrate the effectiveness of the techniques, we determined the two extremal eigenpairs of a cyclic matrix, the transfer matrix of the two-dimensional Ising model, and the Hamiltonian matrix of the one-dimensional Hubbard model.Comment: 29 papes, no figure

    A gamma- and X-ray detector for cryogenic, high magnetic field applications

    As part of an experiment to measure the spectrum of photons emitted in beta-decay of the free neutron, we developed and operated a detector consisting of 12 bismuth germanate (BGO) crystals coupled to avalanche photodiodes (APDs). The detector was operated near liquid nitrogen temperature in the bore of a superconducting magnet and registered photons with energies from 5 keV to 1000 keV. To enlarge the detection range, we also directly detected soft X-rays with energies between 0.2 keV and 20 keV with three large area APDs. The construction and operation of the detector is presented, as well as information on operation of APDs at cryogenic temperatures
