A computational study of thrust augmenting ejectors based on a viscous-inviscid approach
A viscous-inviscid interaction technique is advocated as both an efficient and accurate means of predicting the performance of two-dimensional thrust augmenting ejectors. The flow field is subdivided into a viscous region that contains the turbulent jet and an inviscid region that contains the ambient fluid drawn into the device. The inviscid region is computed with a higher-order panel method, while an integral method is used for the description of the viscous part. The strong viscous-inviscid interaction present within the ejector is simulated in an iterative process where the two regions influence each other en route to a converged solution. The model is applied to a variety of parametric and optimization studies involving ejectors having either one or two primary jets. The effects of nozzle placement, inlet and diffuser shape, free stream speed, and ejector length are investigated. The inlet shape for single jet ejectors is optimized for various free stream speeds and Reynolds numbers. Optimal nozzle tilt and location are identified for various dual-ejector configurations
Lessons from polyoma middle T antigen on signaling and transformation: A DNA tumor virus contribution to the war on cancer
AbstractMiddle T antigen (MT) is the principal oncogene of murine polyomavirus. Its study has led to the discovery of the roles of tyrosine kinase and phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) signaling in mammalian growth control and transformation. MT is necessary for viral transformation in tissue culture cells and tumorigenesis in animals. When expressed alone as a transgene, MT causes tumors in a wide variety of tissues. It has no known catalytic activity, but rather acts by assembling cellular signal transduction molecules. Protein phosphatase 2A, protein tyrosine kinases of the src family, PI3K, phospholipase Cγ1 as well as the Shc/Grb2 adaptors are all assembled on MT. Their activation sets off a series of signaling cascades. Analyses of virus mutants as well as transgenic animals have demonstrated that the effects of a given signal depend not only tissue type, but on the genetic background of the host animal. There remain many opportunities as we seek a full molecular understanding of MT and apply some of its lessons to human cancer
Photonic microstructures as laser mirrors
Deeply etched 1-D third-order Bragg reflectors have been used as mirrors for broad-area semiconductor lasers operating at 975-nm wavelength. From a threshold and efficiency analysis, we determine the mirror reflectivity to be approximately 95%. The design of the GaAs-based laser structure features three InGaAs quantum wells placed close (0.5 μm) to the surface in order to reduce the required etch depth and facilitate high-quality etching. Despite the shallow design and the proximity of the guided mode to the metal contact, the threshold current density (J_(th) = 220 A/cm^2 for infinite cavity length) and internal loss (α_i = 9±1 cm^(−1)) are very low
Deconfinement at finite chemical potential
In a confining, renormalisable, Dyson-Schwinger equation model of two-flavour
QCD we explore the chemical-potential dependence of the dressed-quark
propagator, which provides a means of determining the behaviour of the chiral
and deconfinement order parameters, and low-energy pion observables. We find
coincident, first order deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration
transitions at \mu_c = 375 MeV. f_\pi is insensitive to \mu until \mu \approx
\mu_0 = 0.7 mu_c when it begins to increase rapidly. m_\pi is weakly dependent
on \mu, decreasing slowly with \mu and reaching a minimum 6% less than its
\mu=0 value at \mu=\mu_0. In a two-flavour free-quark gas at \mu=\mu_c the
baryon number density would be approximately 3 \rho_0, where \rho_0=0.16

Simultaneous determination of seven β-lactam antibiotics in human plasma for therapeutic drug monitoring and pharmacokinetic studies
There is strong evidence in literature supporting the benefit of monitoring plasma concentrations of β-lactam antibiotics in the critically ill to ensure appropriateness of dosing. The objective of this work was to develop a method for the simultaneous determination of total concentrations piperacillin, benzylpenicillin, flucloxacillin, meropenem, ertapenem, cephazolin and ceftazidime in human plasma. Sample preparation involved protein precipitation with acetonitrile containing 0.1% formic acid and subsequent dilution of supernatant with 0.1% formic acid in water. Chromatographic separation was achieved on a reversed phase column (C18, 2.6. μm, 2.1. ×. 50. mm) via gradient elution using water and acetonitrile, each containing 0.1% formic acid, as mobile phase. Tandem mass spectrometry (MSMS) analysis was performed, after electrospray ionization in the positive mode, with multiple reaction monitoring (MRM). The method is accurate with the inter-day and intra-day accuracies of quality control samples (QCs) ranging from 95 to 107% and 95 to 108%, respectively. It is also precise with intra-day and inter-day coefficient of variations ranging from 4 to 12% and 5 to 14%, respectively. The lower limit of quantification was 0.1. μg/mL for each antibiotic except flucloxacillin (0.25. μg/mL). Recovery was greater than 96% for all analytes except for ertapenem (78%). Coefficients of variation for the matrix effect were less than 10% over the six batches of plasma. Analytes were stable over three freeze-thaw cycles, and for reasonable hours on the bench top as well as post-preparation. This novel liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method proved accurate, precise and applicable for therapeutic drug monitoring and pharmacokinetic studies of the selected β-lactam antibiotics
Reactions of azoalkenes derived from hydrazones of ethyl bromopyruvate with electron rich alkenes and heterocycles
Three hydrazones of ethyl bromopyruvate, the dinitrophenylhydrazone 2a, the toluene-4-sulphonylhydrazone 2b and the t-butoxycarbonylhydrazone 2c, have been reacted with a series of nucleophilic alkenes and heterocycles in the presence of sodium carbonate. Azoalkenes 3 are presumed as intermediates and adducts have been isolated. The azoalkenes derived from hydrazones 2a and 2c are found to be useful electrophiles and electrophilic dienes
