The ground state energy of the Edwards-Anderson spin glass model with a parallel tempering Monte Carlo algorithm
We study the efficiency of parallel tempering Monte Carlo technique for
calculating true ground states of the Edwards-Anderson spin glass model.
Bimodal and Gaussian bond distributions were considered in two and
three-dimensional lattices. By a systematic analysis we find a simple formula
to estimate the values of the parameters needed in the algorithm to find the GS
with a fixed average probability. We also study the performance of the
algorithm for single samples, quantifying the difference between samples where
the GS is hard, or easy, to find. The GS energies we obtain are in good
agreement with the values found in the literature. Our results show that the
performance of the parallel tempering technique is comparable to more powerful
heuristics developed to find the ground state of Ising spin glass systems.Comment: 30 pages, 17 figures. A new section added. Accepted for publication

Characterizing the Youngest Herschel-detected Protostars I. Envelope Structure Revealed by CARMA Dust Continuum Observations
We present CARMA 2.9 mm dust continuum emission observations of a sample of
14 Herschel-detected Class 0 protostars in the Orion A and B molecular clouds,
drawn from the PACS Bright Red Sources (PBRS) sample (Stutz et al.). These
objects are characterized by very red 24 \micron\ to 70 \micron\ colors and
prominent submillimeter emission, suggesting that they are very young Class 0
protostars embedded in dense envelopes. We detect all of the PBRS in 2.9 mm
continuum emission and emission from 4 protostars and 1 starless core in the
fields toward the PBRS; we also report 1 new PBRS source. The ratio of 2.9 mm
luminosity to bolometric luminosity is higher by a factor of 5 on
average, compared to other well-studied protostars in the Perseus and Ophiuchus
clouds. The 2.9 mm visibility amplitudes for 6 of the 14 PBRS are very flat as
a function of uv-distance, with more than 50\% of the source emission arising
from radii 1500 AU. These flat visibility amplitudes are most consistent
with spherically symmetric envelope density profiles with
~~R. Alternatively, there could be a massive unresolved
structure like a disk or a high-density inner envelope departing from a smooth
power-law. The large amount of mass on scales 1500 AU (implying high
average central densities) leads us to suggest that that the PBRS with flat
visibility amplitude profiles are the youngest PBRS and may be undergoing a
brief phase of high mass infall/accretion and are possibly among the youngest
Class 0 protostars. The PBRS with more rapidly declining visibility amplitudes
still have large envelope masses, but could be slightly more evolved.Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 40 pages, 9 Figures, 4 Table
Mechanical characteristics of a superplastic aluminum-10.2%Mg-0.1%Zr alloy.
The elevated temperature mechanical characteristics of
an aluminum-magnesium-zirconium alloy were studied.
Thermomechanical processing consisted of solution treating
and hot working at 440°C and then warm rolling at 300°C to
94% reduction. Subsequent treatments included annealing at
200°C for one hour, and recrystallizing for one minute at
440°C. Tensile testing of warm rolled, annealed, and
recrystallized material was conducted at various strain
rates and temperatures. The data was analyzed to determine
strain-rate sensitivity coefficients and activation
energies, in turn to be correlated with microstructural data
concurrently obtained on this superplastic alloy. This
material exhibits particularly good ambient properties in
addition to the superplasticity.http://archive.org/details/mechanicalcharac00hartLieutenant Commander, United States NavyApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited
Targeted next-generation sequencing of cancer genes in poorly differentiated thyroid cancer
Poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma (PDTC) is a rare malignancy with higher mortality than well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma. The histological diagnosis can be difficult as well as the therapy. Improved diagnosis and new targeted therapies require knowledge of DNA sequence changes in cancer-relevant genes. The TruSeq Amplicon Cancer Panel was used to screen cancer genomes from 25 PDTC patients for somatic single-nucleotide variants in 48 genes known to represent mutational hotspots. A total of 4490 variants were found in 23 tissue samples of PDTC. Ninety-eight percent (4392) of these variants did not meet the inclusion criteria, while 98 potentially pathogenic or pathogenic variants remained after filtering. These variants were distributed over 33 genes and were all present in a heterozygous state. Five tissue samples harboured not a single variant. Predominantly, variants in P53 (43% of tissue samples) were identified, while less frequently, variants in APC, ERBB4, FLT3, KIT, SMAD4 and BRAF (each in 17% of tissue samples) as well as ATM, EGFR and FBXW7 (each in 13% of tissue samples) were observed. This study identified new potential genetic targets for further research in PDTC. Of particular interest are four observed ERBB4 (alias HER4) variants, which have not been connected to this type of thyroid carcinoma so far. In addition, APC and SMAD4 mutations have not been reported in this subtype of cancer either. In contrast to other reports, we did not find CTNNB1 variants
Identifying Primordial Substructure in NGC 2264
We present new Spitzer Space Telescope observations of the young cluster
NGC2264. Observations at 24 micron with the Multiband Imaging Photometer has
enabled us to identify the most highly embedded and youngest objects in
NGC2264. This letter reports on one particular region of NGC2264 where bright
24 micron sources are spatially configured in curious linear structures with
quasi-uniform separations. The majority of these sources (~60% are found to be
protostellar in nature with Class I spectral energy distributions. Comparison
of their spatial distribution with sub-millimeter data from Wolf-Chase (2003)
and millimeter data from Peretto et al. (2005) shows a close correlation
between the dust filaments and the linear spatial configurations of the
protostars, indicating that star formation is occurring primarily within dense
dusty filaments. Finally, the quasi-uniform separations of the protostars are
found to be comparable in magnitude to the expected Jeans length suggesting
thermal fragmentation of the dense filamentary material.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL, 5 pages, 4 figures. Color version

Lineshape of the Lambda(1405) Hyperon Measured Through its Sigma0 pion0 Decay
The pp -> p K+ Y0 reaction has been studied for hyperon masses m(Y0)<1540
MeV/c2 at COSY-Juelich by using a 3.65 GeV/c circulating proton beam incident
on an internal hydrogen target. Final states comprising two protons, one
positively charged kaon and one negatively charged pion have been identified
with the ANKE spectrometer. Such configurations are sensitive to the production
of the ground state Lambda and Sigma0 hyperons as well as the Sigma0(1385) and
Lambda(1405) resonances. Applying invariant- and missing-mass techniques, the
two overlapping excited states could be well separated, though with limited
statistics. The shape and position of the Lambda(1405) distribution,
reconstructed cleanly in the Sigma0 pion0 channel, are similar to those found
from other decay modes and there is no obvious mass shift. This finding
constitutes a challenging test for models that predict Lambda(1405) to be a
two-state resonance.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Lett.
Spectroscopy of Brown Dwarf Candidates in the rho Ophiuchi Molecular Core
We present an analysis of low resolution infrared spectra for 20 brown dwarf
candidates in the core of the Ophiuchi molecular cloud. Fifteen of the
sources display absorption-line spectra characteristic of late-type stars. By
comparing the depths of water vapor absorption bands in our candidate objects
with a grid of M dwarf standards, we derive spectral types which are
independent of reddening. Optical spectroscopy of one brown dwarf candidate
confirms the spectral type derived from the water bands. Combining their
spectral types with published near-infrared photometry, effective temperatures
and bolometric stellar luminosities are derived enabling us to place our sample
on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We compare the positions of the brown dwarf
candidates in this diagram with two sets of theoretical models in order to
estimate their masses and ages. Considering uncertainties in placing the
candidates in the H-R diagram, six objects consistently lie in the brown dwarf
regime and another five objects lie in the transition region between stellar
and substellar objects. The ages inferred for the sample are consistent with
those derived for higher mass association members. Three of the newly
identified brown dwarfs display infrared excesses at =2.2 m
suggesting that young brown dwarfs can have active accretion disks. Comparing
our mass estimates of the brown dwarf candidates with those derived from
photometric data alone suggests that spectroscopy is an essential component of
investigations of the mass functions of young clusters.Comment: Astronomical Journal, in press: 25 pages, latex, 5 tables and 6

A Herschel and APEX Census of the Reddest Sources in Orion: Searching for the Youngest Protostars
We perform a census of the reddest, and potentially youngest, protostars in the Orion molecular clouds using data obtained with the PACS instrument on board the Herschel Space Observatory and the LABOCA and SABOCA instruments on APEX as part of the Herschel Orion Protostar Survey (HOPS). A total of 55 new protostar candidates are detected at 70 μm and 160 μm that are either too faint (m_(24) > 7 mag) to be reliably classified as protostars or undetected in the Spitzer/MIPS 24 μm band. We find that the 11 reddest protostar candidates with log λF_λ70/λF_λ24 > 1.65 are free of contamination and can thus be reliably explained as protostars. The remaining 44 sources have less extreme 70/24 colors, fainter 70 μm fluxes, and higher levels of contamination. Taking the previously known sample of Spitzer protostars and the new sample together, we find 18 sources that have log λF_λ70/λF_λ24 > 1.65; we name these sources "PACS Bright Red sources," or PBRs. Our analysis reveals that the PBR sample is composed of Class 0 like sources characterized by very red spectral energy distributions (SEDs; T_(bol) 0.6%). Modified blackbody fits to the SEDs provide lower limits to the envelope masses of 0.2-2 M_☉ and luminosities of 0.7-10 L_☉. Based on these properties, and a comparison of the SEDs with radiative transfer models of protostars, we conclude that the PBRs are most likely extreme Class 0 objects distinguished by higher than typical envelope densities and hence, high mass infall rates
High precision beam momentum determination in a synchrotron using a spin resonance method
In order to measure the mass of the eta meson with high accuracy using the
d+p -> 3He+eta reaction, the momentum of the circulating deuteron beam in the
Cooler Synchrotron COSY of the Forschungszentrum Juelich has to be determined
with unprecedented precision. This has been achieved by studying the spin
dynamics of the polarized deuteron beam. By depolarizing the beam through the
use of an artificially induced spin resonance, it was possible to evaluate its
momentum p with a precision of dp/p < 10-4 for a momentum of roughly 3 GeV/c.
Different possible sources of error in the application of the spin resonance
method are discussed in detail and its possible use during a standard
experiment is considered.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, published versio
