Septin6 and Septin7 GTP binding proteins regulate AP-3- and ESCRT-dependent multivesicular body biogenesis

Septins (SEPTs) form a family of GTP-binding proteins implicated in cytoskeleton and membrane organization, cell division and host/pathogen interactions. The precise function of many family members remains elusive. We show that SEPT6 and SEPT7 complexes bound to F-actin regulate protein sorting during multivesicular body (MVB) biogenesis. These complexes bind AP-3, an adapter complex sorting cargos destined to remain in outer membranes of maturing endosomes, modulate AP-3 membrane interactions and the motility of AP-3-positive endosomes. These SEPT-AP interactions also influence the membrane interaction of ESCRT (endosomal-sorting complex required for transport)-I, which selects ubiquitinated cargos for degradation inside MVBs. Whereas our findings demonstrate that SEPT6 and SEPT7 function in the spatial, temporal organization of AP-3- and ESCRT-coated membrane domains, they uncover an unsuspected coordination of these sorting machineries during MVB biogenesis. This requires the E3 ubiquitin ligase LRSAM1, an AP-3 interactor regulating ESCRT-I sorting activity and whose mutations are linked with Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathies

Counterplaces: Re-Placing the Spatial Turn?

In der Debatte zum spatial turn dreht sich nicht nur vieles um Räume, sondern auch um Orte. Da jedoch die Künste allgemein auch in das Reich der Phantasie und der Vorstellung vordringen, treten Phänomene in den Blick, die nicht geographisch verortet werden können. Deshalb will der Tagungsband Unorte. Spielarten einer verlorenen Verortung das Konzept des titelgebenden 'Unorts' einführen und entwirft kulturwissenschaftliche Perspektiven, die verschiedenen Disziplinen bei der angestrebten Schärfung topischer Untersuchungsbereiche gerecht werden sollen. Die beabsichtigte Schärfung des Konzepts bleibt jedoch aus.While discussing the spatial turn, it's not only space, but also place, that is a decisive category. However, since the arts generally deal in fantastic and imaginary figures, one has to cope with phenomena that cannot be localized geographically. In order to augment the conceptual tools, this edited volume introduces "counterplaces" as a new concept in cultural studies. Moreover, and bridging the gap between fields of space research, the articles are meant to highlight narrative and performative modes that emphasize the modelling of places as a way of shaping works of art. Nevertheless, the applicability of the concept itself within cultural studies remains vague

Pop(ping) across the Rhine: The Rise of Subculture in Germany

Ein globales Phänomen mit lokalen Besonderheiten für eine tiefgreifendere Untersuchung zu kombinieren ist gerade kulturwissenschaftlich nicht nur reizvoll, sondern auch notwendig. Denn das Fokussieren auf einen gewissen Gegenstand ist meist nur dann ausssagekräftig, wenn die örtlich gebundenen Produktionsbedingungen der analysierten Phänomene mit berücksichtigt werden. Dies leistet der Sammelband Pop in R(h)einkultur. Oberflächenästhetik und Alltagskultur in der Region, der anlässlich der gleichnamigen Tagung im Oktober 2007 im Düsseldorfer Palais Wittgenstein entstand. Er hat den Anspruch, den Dreiklang von Pop, populärer Kultur und Popkultur unter Bezugnahme auf spezifische Örtlichkeiten in der Wissenschaft zu etablieren und zu gliedern. Es wird bei den unterschiedlichen Beiträgen deutlich, dass eine fundierte Theoriebildung für das Phänomen Pop disziplinübergreifend ein Desiderat ist und nicht nur den Kultur-, Medien- und Musikwissenschaften vorbehalten ist. Combining global phenomena with local particularities for scientific purposes is not only promising but also necessary in the realm of cultural studies, given the fact that the focus on a certain issue bears evidence if and only if the production conditions of the analysed phenomena are also taken into consideration. The edited volume Pop in R(h)einkultur. Oberflächenästhetik und Alltagskultur in der Region (Pure Pop on the Rhine: Surface Aesthetics and Everyday Culture in the Region) comprises the talks delivered at the conference of the same name that took place in Düsseldorf in October 2007. Its objective was to establish and to structure, in scientific discourse, the three terms “pop”, “popular culture” and “pop culture” with respect to specific locations. On reading the diverse contributions, it becomes evident that topics related to pop, which go beyond cultural and media science as well as musicology, still require a sound theoretical base
