    Late-stage Laramide reactivation of Precambrian structures : evidence for [about]N-S Laramide shortening along the southeastern margin of the Wind River Mountains, Wyoming

University of Missouri--Columbia 2012."May, 2012"Deformation along the southeastern margin of the Wind River Mountains during the late stages of the Laramide orogeny is a result of local [about]N-S Laramide shortening, which is in contrast to the regional NE-SW shortening typical in the Laramide orogen. The shortening resulted in the reactivation of Precambrian brittle structures that are concentrated north of the region where the trend of the Wind River thrust changes from its typical NW-SE trend to a more E-W trend. The Spring Creek fault (SCF) is an ENE-trending feature that extends from the Archean core of the range across Paleozoic and Mesozoic units deformed in Sheep Mountain anticline (SMA). Laramide reactivation of the Spring Creek fault produced reverse, south-side-up offset and steep to overturned sections of the Tensleep Sandstone and Madison Limestone on the hanging wall of the fault. The Beaver Creek thrust (BCT), just south of the Spring Creek fault, is a largely E-W trending, northerly dipping Laramide fault that terminates at the Spring Creek fault. It is the controlling fault along the southern margin of the Schoettlin Mountain anticline (ScMA), which is cored by Archean granitic gneiss. Results from mapping, structural analysis, fracture analysis, and 2D seismic experiments all show consistent late-stage [about]N-S Laramide compression throughout the area. The [about]E-W orientations of the Beaver Creek thrust and the Spring Creek fault, parallel to the [about]E-W trace of the Wind River thrust to the south, are interpreted as late-stage hanging wall deformation above the Wind River thrust

    AbstractThe phytoplankton standing crop was assessed in detail along the South Eastern Arabian Sea (SEAS) during the different phases of coastal upwelling in 2009. During phase 1 intense upwelling was observed along the southern transects (8°N and 8.5°N). The maximum chlorophyll a concentration (22.7mgm −3) was observed in the coastal waters off Thiruvananthapuram (8.5°N). Further north there was no signature of upwelling, with extensive Trichodesmium erythraeum blooms. Diatoms dominated in these upwelling regions with the centric diatom Chaetoceros curvisetus being the dominant species along the 8°N transect. Along the 8.5°N transect pennate diatoms like Nitzschia seriata and Pseudo-nitzschia sp. dominated. During phase 2, upwelling of varying intensity was observed throughout the study area with maximum chlorophyll a concentrations along the 9°N transect (25mgm−3) with Chaetoceros curvisetus as the dominant phytoplankton. Along the 8.5°N transect pennate diatoms during phase 1 were replaced by centric diatoms like Chaetoceros sp. The presence of solitary pennate diatoms Amphora sp. and Navicula sp. were significant in the waters off Kochi. Upwelling was waning during phase 3 and was confined to the coastal waters of the southern transects with the highest chlorophyll a concentration of 11.2mgm−3. Along with diatoms, dinoflagellate cell densities increased in phases 2 and 3. In the northern transects (9°N and 10°N) the proportion of dinoflagellates was comparatively higher and was represented mainly by Protoperidinium spp., Ceratium spp. and Dinophysis spp

    Effectiveness of a community football programme on improving physiological markers of health in a hard-to-reach male population: the role of exercise intensity

The present study evaluated the effectiveness of participation in recreational football during a community health programme, on physiological markers of health within a hard to reach population. Nine men (Age: 33 ± 9 years, Mass: 75.4 ± 13.7 kg, Height: 1.74 ± 0.07 m and Body Fat: 19 ± 2%) were recruited to participate in the study in collaboration with an English Premier League Football Club. Participants completed the 12-week football-based programme which included two coached football sessions each week. Physiological tests for blood pressure, resting heart rate, cholesterol and an anthropometrical test for body composition were completed at three time points during the study (Weeks – 1, 6 and 12) in an attempt to evaluate the impact of the intervention on health. During each training session, measurements of intensity (%HRmax, identified from the yoyo intermittent level 1 test), duration and rating of perceived exertion were made. The 12-week programme (mean HRmax throughout programme = 75 ± 4% beats min−1; mean RPE throughout programme = 6 ± 1) elicited few changes in physiological markers of health with the only significant change been a decrease in resting heart rate from weeks 6 to 12 (87 ± 22 beats min−1 at week-6, to 72 ± 17 beats min−1; p < 0.05). These data would suggest that the current community football-related health project was not effective in improving physiological markers of health, but was able to maintain their level of health. A lack of improvement may be due to the low intensity of sessions and a lack of coach education for the promotion of sessions that aim to improve health

    The Exact MSSM Spectrum from String Theory

    We show the existence of realistic vacua in string theory whose observable sector has exactly the matter content of the MSSM. This is achieved by compactifying the E_8 x E_8 heterotic superstring on a smooth Calabi-Yau threefold with an SU(4) gauge instanton and a Z_3 x Z_3 Wilson line. Specifically, the observable sector is N=1 supersymmetric with gauge group SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y x U(1)_{B-L}, three families of quarks and leptons, each family with a right-handed neutrino, and one Higgs-Higgs conjugate pair. Importantly, there are no extra vector-like pairs and no exotic matter in the zero mode spectrum. There are, in addition, 6 geometric moduli and 13 gauge instanton moduli in the observable sector.
