    Trumpet slices of the Schwarzschild-Tangherlini spacetime

    We study families of time-independent maximal and 1+log foliations of the Schwarzschild-Tangherlini spacetime, the spherically-symmetric vacuum black hole solution in D spacetime dimensions, for D >= 4. We identify special members of these families for which the spatial slices display a trumpet geometry. Using a generalization of the 1+log slicing condition that is parametrized by a constant n we recover the results of Nakao, Abe, Yoshino and Shibata in the limit of maximal slicing. We also construct a numerical code that evolves the BSSN equations for D=5 in spherical symmetry using moving-puncture coordinates, and demonstrate that these simulations settle down to the trumpet solutions.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, submitted to PR

    The present study examined the effect of an experimentally induced mood state on student pilot learning for ground school- related information. The findings from this study supported the research mat has been done in the past on negative mood and memory (Leigh & Ellis, 1981). Furthermore, the researchers showed support for the hypothesis that a negative mood state will cause a decrement in memory performance for student pilots who are attempting to remember ground-based material. Although further research needs to be done in this area, evidence has shown that a negative mood state will decrease student pilot memory ability

    Support for ( Z )-11-Hexadecanal as a Pheromone Antagonist in Ostrinia nubilalis: Flight Tunnel and Single Sensillum Studies with a New York Population

    The flight-tunnel response of male Z-strain European corn borer moths (ECB), Ostrinia nubilalis, from a population in New York State (USA), was significantly antagonized by addition of 1% (Z)-11-hexadecanal (Z11-16:Ald) to their sex pheromone (a 97:3 mix of (Z)- and (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate [Z/E11-14:OAc]). The level of antagonism was equivalent to that observed for the previously identified ECB antagonist, (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14:OAc), and supports a recent report showing that Z11-16:Ald, a minor pheromone component of the Noctuid moth, Sesamia nonagrioides, caused antagonism of ECB pheromone communication in sympatric populations in the Iberian Peninsula. Single-sensillum recordings from ECB antennae, which included cross-adaptation experiments, showed that the same olfactory receptor neuron processing Z9-14:OAc inputs was responsible for detecting Z11-16:Ald, and that this neuron was not responsive to two other aldehydes, (Z)-9-tetradecanal (Z9-14:Ald) and (Z)-9-hexadecanal (Z9-16:Ald), found in other moth sex pheromones. Our results show that the antagonism is not confined to one geographic region, is specific for Z11-16:Ald, and that antagonist pathways might have the potential for processing a number of structurally similar compound

    A Coupled Experimental and Computational Approach to Quantify Deleterious Hemodynamics, Vascular Alterations, and Mechanisms of Long-Term Morbidity in Response to Aortic Coarctati

    Introduction Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) is associated with morbidity despite treatment. Although mechanisms remain elusive, abnormal hemodynamics and vascular biomechanics are implicated. We present a novel approach that facilitates quantification of coarctation-induced mechanical alterations and their impact on vascular structure and function, without genetic or confounding factors. Methods Rabbits underwent thoracic CoA at 10 weeks of age (~ 9 human years) to induce a 20 mm Hg blood pressure (BP) gradient using permanent or dissolvable suture thereby replicating untreated and corrected CoA. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was performed using imaging and BP data at 32 weeks to quantify velocity, strain and wall shear stress (WSS) for comparison to vascular structure and function as revealed by histology and myograph results. Results Systolic and mean BP was elevated in CoA compared to corrected and control rabbits leading to vascular thickening, disorganization and endothelial dysfunction proximally and distally. Corrected rabbits had less severe medial thickening, endothelial dysfunction, and stiffening limited to the proximal region despite 12 weeks of normal BP (~ 4 human years) after the suture dissolved. WSS was elevated distally for CoA rabbits, but reduced for corrected rabbits. Discussion These findings are consistent with alterations in humans. We are now poised to investigate mechanical contributions to mechanisms of morbidity in CoA using these methods

    Gene Flow Among Three Races of European Corn Borers (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in New York State

    In New York state, there are three races of European corn borer moths, which are characterized principally by differences in voltinism and the sex pheromone communication system. One race is bivoltine, with females producing and males responding to a 99:1 E/Z isomeric ratio of ∆11-14:0Ac's as the sex pheromone. Two races, one univoltine and one bivoltine, produce and respond to a 3:97 E/Z blend of ∆11-14:OAc's. The races are referred to as BE, UZ, and BZ to denote these differences. Analyses by gas chromatography of field-collected females indicate that there is significant hybridization between the Z and E races when in sympatry, with hybrid females producing a 68:32 ratio of E/Z11-14:OAc. Gene flow among the races was investigated using differences in triose phosphate isomerase (TPI) allozyme frequencies of moths from sites sampled across the state. The fixed nature of the Tpi-1 allele in the BE race and increases in the Tpi-1 allele frequencies in UZ populations in sympatry with the BE race support the hypothesis that gene flow following hybridization is unidirectional from BE populations into the Z populations. In addition, the TPI genotypes of the 10 hybrid females analyzed were consistent with hybridization occurring by E males mating with Z female

    Magnetic deformation of the white dwarf surface structure

    The influence of strong, large-scale magnetic fields on the structure and temperature distribution in white dwarf atmospheres is investigated. Magnetic fields may provide an additional component of pressure support, thus possibly inflating the atmosphere compared to the non-magnetic case. Since the magnetic forces are not isotropic, atmospheric properties may significantly deviate from spherical symmetry. In this paper the magnetohydrostatic equilibrium is calculated numerically in the radial direction for either for small deviations from different assumptions for the poloidal current distribution. We generally find indication that the scale height of the magnetic white dwarf atmosphere enlarges with magnetic field strength and/or poloidal current strength. This is in qualitative agreement with recent spectropolarimetric observations of Grw+10\degr8247. Quantitatively, we find for e.g. a mean surface poloidal field strength of 100 MG and a toroidal field strength of 2-10 MG an increase of scale height by a factor of 10. This is indicating that already a small deviation from the initial force-free dipolar magnetic field may lead to observable effects. We further propose the method of finite elements for the solution of the two-dimensional magnetohydrostatic equilibrium including radiation transport in the diffusive approximation. We present and discuss preliminary solutions, again indicating on an expansion of the magnetized atmosphere.Comment: 14 pages with 14 figure

    Trends in Kaposi's sarcoma-associated Herpesvirus antibodies prior to the development of HIV-associated Kaposi's sarcoma: a nested case-control study.

    HIV-associated Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa since both the causative agent, Kaposi's sarcoma associated-herpesvirus (KSHV), and the major risk factor, HIV, are prevalent. In a nested case-control study within a long-standing clinical cohort in rural Uganda, we used stored sera to examine the evolution of antibody titres against the KSHV antigens K8.1 and latency-associated nuclear antigen (LANA) among 30 HIV-infected subjects who subsequently developed HIV-related KS (cases) and among 108 matched HIV/KSHV coinfected controls who did not develop KS. Throughout the 6 years prior to diagnosis, antibody titres to K8.1 and LANA were significantly higher among cases than controls (p < 0.0001), and titres increased prior to diagnosis in the cases. K8.1 titres differed more between KS cases and controls, compared to LANA titres. These differences in titre between cases and controls suggest a role for lytic viral replication in the pathogenesis of HIV-related KS in this setting
