Explaining the lack of dynamics in the diffusion of small stationary fuel cells
Using the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen to water in order to produce electricity and heat, promises a high electrical efficiency even in small devices which can be installed close to the consumer. This approach seems to be an impressive idea to contribute to a viable future energy supply under the restrictions of climate change policy. Major reasons currently hampering the diffusion of such technologies for house energy supply in Germany are analysed in this paper. The barriers revealed, include high production costs as well as economic and legal obstacles for installing the devices so that they can be operated in competition to central power plants, beside others in tenancies.fuel cell, diffusion processes, valuation of environmental effects, technological innovation
Sicht optimierte Buhnen/Buhnenfelder auszeichnen sollten. -
erarbeitete zentrale Projektdatenbank integriert.
betroffenen Menschen umso aktueller
Plasmon damping below the Landau regime: the role of defects in epitaxial graphene
The sheet plasmon in epitaxially grown graphene layers on SiC(0001) and the influence of surface roughness have been investigated in detail by means of low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). We show that the existence of steps or grain boundaries in this epitaxial system is a source of strong damping, while the dispersion is rather insensitive to defects. To the first order, the lifetime of the plasmons was found to be proportional to the average terrace length and to the plasmon wavelength. A possible reason for this surprisingly efficient plasmon damping may be the close coincidence of phase (and group) velocities of the plasmons ( almost linear dispersion) with the Fermi velocity of the electrons. Therefore, uncorrelated defects like steps only have to act as a momentum source to effectively couple plasmons to the electron-hole continuum
Hexagons, Kinks and Disorder in Oscillated Granular Layers
Experiments on vertically oscillated granular layers in an evacuated
container reveal a sequence of well-defined pattern bifurcations as the
container acceleration is increased. Period doublings of the layer center of
mass motion and a parametric wave instability interact to produce hexagons and
more complicated patterns composed of distinct spatial domains of different
relative phase separated by kinks (phase discontinuities). Above a critical
acceleration, the layer becomes disordered in both space and time.Comment: 4 pages. The RevTeX file has a macro allowing various styles. The

Human TPX2 is required for targeting Aurora-A kinase to the spindle
Aurora-A is a serine-threonine kinase implicated in the assembly and maintenance of the mitotic spindle. Here we show that human Aurora-A binds to TPX2, a prominent component of the spindle apparatus. TPX2 was identified by mass spectrometry as a major protein coimmunoprecipitating specifically with Aurora-A from mitotic HeLa cell extracts. Conversely, Aurora-A could be detected in TPX2 immunoprecipitates. This indicates that subpopulations of these two proteins undergo complex formation in vivo. Binding studies demonstrated that the NH2 terminus of TPX2 can directly interact with the COOH-terminal catalytic domain of Aurora-A. Although kinase activity was not required for this interaction, TPX2 was readily phosphorylated by Aurora-A. Upon siRNA-mediated elimination of TPX2 from cells, the association of Aurora-A with the spindle microtubules was abolished, although its association with spindle poles was unaffected. Conversely, depletion of Aurora-A by siRNA had no detectable influence on the localization of TPX2. We propose that human TPX2 is required for targeting Aurora-A kinase to the spindle apparatus. In turn, Aurora-A might regulate the function of TPX2 during spindle assembly
Role of the Brans-Dicke scalar in the holographic description of dark energy
We study cosmological application of the holographic energy density in the
Brans-Dicke theory. Considering the holographic energy density as a dynamical
cosmological constant, it is more natural to study it in the Brans-Dicke theory
than in general relativity. Solving the Friedmann and Brans-Dicke field
equations numerically, we clarify the role of Brans-Dicke field during
evolution of the universe. When the Hubble horizon is taken as the IR cutoff,
the equation of state (w_{\Lmd}) for the holographic energy density is
determined to be 5/3 when the Brans-Dicke parameter \omg goes infinity. This
means that the Brans-Dicke field plays a crucial role in determining the
equation of state. For the particle horizon IR cutoff, the Brans-Dicke scalar
mediates a transition from w_{\Lmd} = -1/3 (past) to w_{\Lmd} = 1/3
(future). If a dust matter is present, it determines future equation of state.
In the case of future event horizon cutoff, the role of the Brans-Dicke scalar
and dust matter are turned out to be trivial, whereas the holographic energy
density plays an important role as a dark energy candidate with w_{\Lmd} =-1.Comment: 10pages, 3figures, version to appear in PL
Optimal public investment, growth, and consumption : evidence from African countries
This paper develops a model positing a nonlinear relationship between public investment
and growth. The model is then applied to a panel of African countries, using nonlinear
estimating procedures. The growth-maximizing level of public investment is estimated at
about 10% of GDP, based on System GMM estimation. The paper further runs
simulations, obtaining the constant optimal public investment share that maximizes the
sum of discounted consumption as between 8.1% and 9.6% of GDP. Compared with the
observed end-of-panel mean value of no more than 7.26%, these estimates suggest that
there has been significant public underinvestment in Africa.http://journals.cambridge.org/2016-07-30hb201
Morbillivirus infections of aquatic mammals: newly identified members of the genus.
Several disease outbreaks, which have caused the deaths of many thousands of seals and dolphins during the last decade, have now been attributed to infections with newly identified Morbilliviruses. Outbreaks in the late eighties amongst harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) in northwestern Europe and amongst baikal seals (Phoca sibirica) in Siberia were caused by the newly discovered phocine distemper virus and by a strain of canine distemper virus, respectively. Although closely related these two viruses were not identical. They were more distantly related to the viruses which caused mass mortality amongst striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) in the Mediterranean sea in the early nineties. This dolphin morbillivirus was shown to be closely related to a virus that was found in harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) which had stranded at the coasts of northwestern Europe in the late eighties: porpoise morbillivirus. The present knowledge of the genetic and antigenic relationships of these apparently new members of the genus Morbillivirus with the established members of the genus is presented. In addition, the origin and epizootiological aspects of these newly discovered viruses are discussed. Finally experimental evidence that environmental pollution may have contributed to the severity and extent of these infections in recent years is presented
Thermo-responsive cell culture carriers based on poly(vinyl methyl ether) - The effect of biomolecular ligands to balance cell adhesion and stimulated detachment
Two established material systems for thermally stimulated detachment of adherent cells were combined in a cross-linked polymer blend to merge favorable properties. Through this approach poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAAm) with its superior switching characteristic was paired with a poly(vinyl methyl ether)-based composition that allows adjusting physico-chemical and biomolecular properties in a wide range. Beyond pure PNiPAAm, the proposed thermo-responsive coating provides thickness, stiffness and swelling behavior, as well as an apposite density of reactive sites for biomolecular functionalization, as effective tuning parameters to meet specific requirements of a particular cell type regarding initial adhesion and ease of detachment. To illustrate the strength of this approach, the novel cell culture carrier was applied to generate transplantable sheets of human corneal endothelial cells (HCEC). Sheets were grown, detached, and transferred onto planar targets. Cell morphology, viability and functionality were analyzed by immunocytochemistry and determination of transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) before and after sheet detachment and transfer. HCEC layers showed regular morphology with appropriate TEER. Cells were positive for function-associated marker proteins ZO-1, Na+/K+-ATPase, and paxillin, and extracellular matrix proteins fibronectin, laminin and collagen type IV before and after transfer. Sheet detachment and transfer did not impair cell viability. Subsequently, a potential application in ophthalmology was demonstrated by transplantation onto de-endothelialized porcine corneas in vitro. The novel thermo-responsive cell culture carrier facilitates the generation and transfer of functional HCEC sheets. This paves the way to generate tissue engineered human corneal endothelium as an alternative transplant source for endothelial keratoplasty
