    Energy efficient engine high pressure turbine test hardware detailed design report

    The high pressure turbine configuration for the Energy Efficient Engine is built around a two-stage design system. Moderate aerodynamic loading for both stages is used to achieve the high level of turbine efficiency. Flowpath components are designed for 18,000 hours of life, while the static and rotating structures are designed for 36,000 hours of engine operation. Both stages of turbine blades and vanes are air-cooled incorporating advanced state of the art in cooling technology. Direct solidification (DS) alloys are used for blades and one stage of vanes, and an oxide dispersion system (ODS) alloy is used for the Stage 1 nozzle airfoils. Ceramic shrouds are used as the material composition for the Stage 1 shroud. An active clearance control (ACC) system is used to control the blade tip to shroud clearances for both stages. Fan air is used to impinge on the shroud casing support rings, thereby controlling the growth rate of the shroud. This procedure allows close clearance control while minimizing blade tip to shroud rubs

    The effect of the solar field reversal on the modulation of galactic cosmic rays

    There is now a growing awareness that solar cycle related changes in the large-scale structure of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) may play an important role in the modulation of galactic cosmic rays. To date, attention focussed on two aspects of the magnetic field structure: large scale compression regions produced by fast solar wind streams and solar flares, both of which are known to vary in intensity and number over the solar cycle, and the variable warp of the heliospheric current sheet. It is suggested that another feature of the solar cycle is worthy of consideration: the field reversal itself. If the Sun reverses its polarity by simply overturning the heliospheric current sheet (northern fields migrating southward and vice-versa) then there may well be an effect on cosmic ray intensity. However, such a simple picture of solar reversal seems improbable. Observations of the solar corona suggest the existence of not one but several current sheets in the heliosphere at solar maximum. The results of a simple calculation to demonstrate that the variation in cosmic ray intensities that will result can be as large as is actually observed over the solar cycle are given

    Dynamics of hadron strong production and decay

    We generalize results of lattice QCD to determine the spin-dependent symmetries and factorization properties of meson production in OZI allowed processes. This explains some conjectures previously made in the literature about axial meson decays and gives predictions for exclusive decays of vector charmonia, including ways of establishing the structure of Y(4260) and Y(4325) from their S-wave decays. Factorization gives a selection rule which forbids e+e−→D∗D2e^+e^- \to D^* D_2 near threshold with the tensor meson in helicity 2. The relations among amplitudes for double charmonia production \e^+e^-\to \psi\chi_{0,1,2} are expected to differ from the analagous relations among light flavour production such as \e^+e^-\to \omega f_{0,1,2}.Comment: 13 pages; journal versio

    Aspects of Neutrino Interactions (Scattering at small Q2Q^2- Region)

    The article begins with a description of chiral symmetry and its application to neutrino induced reactions. For small Q2Q^2 (forward direction) the process is dominated by the amplitute with helicity zero where the pion pole disappears when multiplied with the polarization vector. The remaining part of the amplitude is determined by PCAC. For Eν>2E_\nu > 2 GeV the computed cross sections are in good agreement with data. In coherent pion production we expect equal yields for neutrinos and antineutrinos a relation which for Eν>2E_\nu > 2 GeV is fulfilled.     Mecidea longula Stål (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Pentatominae: Mecideini) is established in south Florida

    A Caribbean species of Mecidea Dallas, M. longula Stål, apparently established in south Florida, is reported from the United States for the first time. Specimens were first collected in February 2008 in a light trap operated in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Collections in that trap have continued through the present. Searches near the trap location resulted in several specimens being taken from smutgrass, Sporobolus indicus (L.), an exotic grass now established throughout much of the southeastern United States. The three North American species of Mecidea are keyed and illustrated. In addition to the Florida locality, M. longula is reported for the first time from the British Virgin Islands, St. Kitts, St. Martin, and the Turks and Caicos Islands

    Mariner 9 data storage subsystem flight performance summary

    The performance is summarized of the Mariner 9 Data Storage Subsystem (DSS) throughout the primary and extended missions. Information presented is limited to reporting of anomalies which occurred during the playback sequences. Tables and figures describe the anomalies (dropouts, missing and added bits, in the imaging data) as a function of time (accumulated tape passes). The data results indicate that the performance of the DSS was satisfactory and within specification throughout the mission. The data presented is taken from the Spacecraft Team Incident/Surprise Anomaly Log recorded during the mission. Pertinent statistics concerning the tape transport performance are given. Also presented is a brief description of DSS operation, particularly that related to the recorded anomalies. This covers the video data encoding and how it is interpreted/decoded by ground data processing and the functional operation of the DSS in abnormal conditions such as loss of lock to the playback signal

    Displacement Profile of Charge Density Waves and Domain Walls at Critical Depinning

    The influence of a strong surface potential on the critical depinning of an elastic system driven in a random medium is considered. If the surface potential prevents depinning completely the elastic system shows a parabolic displacement profile. Its curvature C\mathcal{C} exhibits at zero temperature a pronounced rhombic hysteresis curve of width 2fc2f_c with the bulk depinning threshold fcf_c. The hysteresis disappears at non-zero temperatures if the driving force is changed adiabatically. If the surface depins by the applied force or thermal creep, C\mathcal{C} is reduced with increasing velocity. The results apply, e.g., to driven magnetic domain walls, flux-line lattices and charge-density waves.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    The efficiency of all treatment methods formerly or currently used in treating chemical wastes is assessed with emphasis on the disposal of hypergolic propellants. Maximum focus is on the space shuttle propellants MMH and N2O4. Except for hydrogen peroxide oxidizers, all the propellants are nitrogen based and can be potentially reduced to valuable plant nutrients. In theory, all the propellants can be reduced to carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, except of fuming nitric acid which contains a small amount of fluorine. Appendices cover: (1) a general design criteria for disposal ponds; (2) thermal aspects of reaction in dilute solution; (3) gas bubble growth, detachment, and rise (4) absorption scrubber fundamentals and descriptions; (5) separation of a propellant vapor from a helium stream by permeation; and (6) atmospheric emission limits

    Precision determination of the pi-N scattering lengths and the charged pi-NN coupling constant

    We critically evaluate the isovector GMO sumrule for the charged πNN\pi N N coupling constant using recent precision data from π−\pi ^-p and π−\pi^-d atoms and with careful attention to systematic errors. From the π−\pi ^-d scattering length we deduce the pion-proton scattering lengths 1/2(aπ−p+aπ−n)=(−20±6{1/2}(a_{\pi ^-p}+a_{\pi ^-n})=(-20\pm 6(statistic)±10 \pm 10 (systematic))~⋅10−4mπc−1\cdot 10^{-4}m_{\pi_c}^{-1} and 1/2(aπ−p−aπ−n)=(903±14)⋅10−4mπc−1{1/2}(a_{\pi ^-p}-a_{\pi ^-n})=(903 \pm 14)\cdot 10^{-4}m_{\pi_c}^{-1}. From this a direct evaluation gives gc2(GMO)/4π=14.20±0.07g^2_c(GMO)/4\pi =14.20\pm 0.07(statistic)±0.13\pm 0.13(systematic) or fc2/4π=0.0786±0.0008f^2_c/4\pi= 0.0786\pm 0.0008.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, latex and postscript; invited talk at PANIC99; to appear in Nucl.
