Trace element geochemistry of peridotites from the Izu-Bonin-Mariana Forearc, Leg 125
Trace element analyses (first-series transition elements, Ti, Rb, Sr, Zr, Y, Nb, and REE) were carried out on whole rocks and minerals from 10 peridotite samples from both Conical Seamount in the Mariana forearc and Torishima Forearc Seamount in the Izu-Bonin forearc using a combination of XRF, ID-MS, ICP-MS, and ion microprobe. The concentrations of incompatible trace elements are generally low, reflecting the highly residual nature of the peridotites and their low clinopyroxene content (n ratios in the range of 0.05-0.25; several samples show possible small positive Eu anomalies. LREE enrichment is common to both seamounts, although the peridotites from Conical Seamount have higher (La/Ce)n ratios on extended chondrite-normalized plots, in which both REEs and other trace elements are organized according to their incompatibility with respect to a harzburgitic mantle. Comparison with abyssal peridotite patterns suggests that the LREEs, Rb, Nb, Sr, Sm, and Eu are all enriched in the Leg 125 peridotites, but Ti and the HREEs exhibit no obvious enrichment. The peridotites also give positive anomalies for Zr and Sr relative to their neighboring REEs. Covariation diagrams based on clinopyroxene data show that Ti and the HREEs plot on an extension of an abyssal peridotite trend to more residual compositions. However, the LREEs, Rb, Sr, Sm, and Eu are displaced off this trend toward higher values, suggesting that these elements were introduced during an enrichment event. The axis of dispersion on these plots further suggests that enrichment took place during or after melting and thus was not a characteristic of the lithosphere before subduction.
Compared with boninites sampled from the Izu-Bonin-Mariana forearc, the peridotites are significantly more enriched in LREEs. Modeling of the melting process indicates that if they represent the most depleted residues of the melting events that generated forearc boninites they must have experienced subsolidus enrichment in these elements, as well as in Rb, Sr, Zr, Nb, Sm, and Eu. The lack of any correlation with the degree of serpentinization suggests that low-temperature fluids were not the prime cause of enrichment. The enrichment in the high-field-strength elements also suggests that at least some of this enrichment may have involved melts rather than aqueous fluids. Moreover, the presence of the hydrous minerals magnesio-hornblende and tremolite and the common resorption of orthopyroxene indicate that this high-temperature peridotite-fluid interaction may have taken place in a water-rich environment in the forearc following the melting event that produced the boninites. The peridotites from Leg 125 may therefore contain a record of an important flux of elements into the mantle wedge during the initial formation of forearc lithosphere. Ophiolitic peridotites with these characteristics have not yet been reported, perhaps because the precise equivalents to the serpentinite seamounts have not been analyzed
Eclogites and basement terrane tectonics in the northern arm of the Grenville orogen, NW Scotland
The presence of eclogites within continental crust is a key indicator of collisional orogenesis. Eclogites within the Eastern Glenelg basement inlier of the Northern Highland Terrane (NHT) have been re-dated in order to provide more accurate constraints on the timing of collision within the northern arm of the Grenville Orogen. The eclog-ites yield dates of ca.1200 Ma which are interpreted to record the onset of continent-continent interaction, and the NHT as a whole is thought to represent the lower plate in successive 1200-1000 Ma collision events. The Eastern Glenelg basement inlier is viewed as a fragment of the leading edge of the NHT continental basement that was partially subducted along a suture and then exhumed back up the subduction channel. Differences in ages of igneous protoliths and intrusive histories, and metamorphic events (this paper) between the NHT basement and the Laurentian foreland, suggests that they were separate crustal blocks until after ca. 1600 Ma. We therefore suggest that: (1) the NHT represents a fragment of Archean-Paleoproterozoic crust that was reworked within the ca. 1.7-1.6 Ga Labradorian-Gothian belt, although whether it was derived from Laurentia or Baltica is uncertain, and (2) amalgamation of the NHT with the Laurentian foreland did not occur until the terminal stages of the Grenville collision at ca. 1000 Ma
Testing for ocean acidification during the Early Toarcian using δ44/40Ca and δ88/86Sr
During the Early Toarcian, volcanic gases released by the Karoo-Ferrar large igneous province are widely believed to have caused severe environmental disturbances, including ocean acidification. Here we show records of δ Ca and δ Sr through the Early Toarcian, as recorded in three groups of biogenic calcite: Megateuthididae belemnites, Passaloteuthididae belemnites, and brachiopods of the species Soaresirhynchia bouchardi. We evaluate the data to eliminate the influence on isotopic composition of varying temperature, calcification rate, and salinity, through the section that may mask the environmental signals. Neither δ Ca nor δ Sr show negative isotope excursions across the suggested acidification interval as would be expected had acidification occurred. A profile of δ B, re-interpreted from a published study, shows no variation through the interval. Taken together, these data provide little support for ocean acidification at this time. In our belemnites, values of δ Sr are independent of temperature or Sr/Ca. For brachiopods, too few data are available to determine whether such dependences exist. Values of δ Ca show a weak temperature control of magnitude +0.020 ± 0.004 ‰/°C (2 s.d.). In belemnites, δ Ca also correlates positively with Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca. 44/40 88/86 44/40 88/86 11 88/86 44/40 44/4
Effects of trade barriers on development and growth
A basic definition of trade barriers could be ‘all factors that influence the amount of goods and services shipped across international borders’ (Feenstra and Taylor, 2017a). This definition is quite neutral, and it needs to be understood that the word ‘barrier’ has a negative connotation, which means that a trade barrier would be any instrument that limits or restrict trade between countries, as opposed to free trade. It is generally accepted that free trade is good for productivity and economic growth, but it is also true that most countries apply some sort of trade restriction, for different reasons

HPA axis related genes and response to psychological therapies: genetics and epigenetics
Background
Hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis functioning has been implicated in the development of stress-related psychiatric diagnoses and response to adverse life experiences. This study aimed to investigate the association between genetic and epigenetics in HPA axis and response to cognitive behavior therapy (CBT).
Methods
Children with anxiety disorders were recruited into the Genes for Treatment project (GxT, N = 1,152). Polymorphisms of FKBP5 and GR were analyzed for association with response to CBT. Percentage DNA methylation at the FKBP5 and GR promoter regions was measured before and after CBT in a subset (n = 98). Linear mixed effect models were used to investigate the relationship between genotype, DNA methylation, and change in primary anxiety disorder severity (treatment response).
Results
Treatment response was not associated with FKBP5 and GR polymorphisms, or pretreatment percentage DNA methylation. However, change in FKBP5 DNA methylation was nominally significantly associated with treatment response. Participants who demonstrated the greatest reduction in severity decreased in percentage DNA methylation during treatment, whereas those with little/no reduction in severity increased in percentage DNA methylation. This effect was driven by those with one or more FKBP5 risk alleles, with no association seen in those with no FKBP5 risk alleles. No significant association was found between GR methylation and response.
Conclusions
Allele-specific change in FKBP5 methylation was associated with treatment response. This is the largest study to date investigating the role of HPA axis related genes in response to a psychological therapy. Furthermore, this is the first study to demonstrate that DNA methylation changes may be associated with response to psychological therapies in a genotype-dependent manner

“Just keep pushing”: parents’ experiences of accessing child and adolescent mental health services for child anxiety problems
Background:Anxiety disorders are among the most common psychopathologies in childhood, however a high proportion of children with anxiety disorders do not access effective treatments. The aim of the present qualitative study was to understand families’ experiences of seeking help and accessing specialist treatment for difficulties with childhood anxiety. Methods:Parents of 16 children (aged 7-12 years) referred to a child mental health service for difficulties with anxiety, were interviewed about their experiences of seeking and accessing treatment within CAMHS. All interviews were transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed for similarities and differences in families’ experiences. Results:Factors that helped and/or hindered families accessing treatment related to: i) parental recognition, ii) contact with professionals, iii) reaching CAMHS, iv) parental effort, and v) parental knowledge and concerns. High demands on services and parents’ uncertainty surrounding the help-seeking process presented key hurdles for families. The critical role of parental persistence and support from GPs and school staff was evident across interviews. Conclusions:Findings highlighted the need for information and guidance on identifying child anxiety difficulties and professional, peer and self-help support; and ensuring sufficient provision is available to allow families prompt access to support
How and when plume zonation appeared during the 132 Myr evolution of the Tristan Hotspot
Increasingly, spatial geochemical zonation, present as geographically distinct, subparallel
trends, is observed along hotspot tracks, such as Hawaii and the Galapagos. The origin of this
zonation is currently unclear. Recently zonation was found along the last B70 Myr of the
Tristan-Gough hotspot track. Here we present new Sr–Nd–Pb–Hf isotope data from the older
parts of this hotspot track (Walvis Ridge and Rio Grande Rise) and re-evaluate published data
from the Etendeka and Parana flood basalts erupted at the initiation of the hotspot track. We
show that only the enriched Gough, but not the less-enriched Tristan, component is present in
the earlier (70–132 Ma) history of the hotspot. Here we present a model that can explain the
temporal evolution and origin of plume zonation for both the Tristan-Gough and Hawaiian
hotspots, two end member types of zoned plumes, through processes taking place in the
plume sources at the base of the lower mantle

The utility of the SCAS-C/P to detect specific anxiety disorders among clinically anxious children
Questionnaire measures offer a time and cost-effective alternative to full diagnostic assessments for identifying and differentiating between potential anxiety disorders and are commonly used in clinical practice. Little is known, however, about the capacity of questionnaire measures to detect specific anxiety disorders in clinically anxious preadolescent children. This study aimed to establish the ability of the Spence Children’s Anxiety Scale (SCAS) subscales to identify children with specific anxiety disorders in a large clinic-referred sample (N = 1,438) of children aged 7 to 12 years. We examined the capacity of the Separation Anxiety, Social Phobia, Generalized Anxiety, and Physical Injury Fears (phobias) subscales to discriminate between children with and without the target disorder. We also identified optimal cutoff scores on subscales for accurate identification of children with the corresponding disorder, and examined the contribution of child, mother, and father reports. The Separation Anxiety subscale was able to accurately identify children with separation anxiety disorder, and this was replicated across all 3 reporters. Mother- and father-reported Social Phobia subscales also accurately identified children with social anxiety disorder, although child report was only able to accurately detect social anxiety disorder in girls. Using 2 or more reporters improved the sensitivity of the Separation Anxiety and Social Phobia subscales but reduced specificity. The Generalized Anxiety and Physical Injury Fears subscales failed to accurately identify children with the corresponding disorders. These findings have implications for the potential use of mother-, father-, and child-report SCAS subscales to detect specific disorders in preadolescent children in clinical settings
