Study Design:Secondary analysis of prospective, multicenter data. Objective:To evaluate impact of sagittal parameters on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in adults with lumbosacral spondylolisthesis. Methods:Adults with unoperated lumbosacral spondylolisthesis were identified in the Spinal Deformity Study Group database. Pearson's correlations were calculated between SF-12 (Short Form-12)/Scoliosis Research Society-30 (SRS-30) scores and radiographic parameters (C7 sagittal vertical axis [SVA] deviation, T1 pelvic angle, pelvic tilt [PT], pelvic incidence, sacral slope, slip angle, Meyerding slip grade, Labelle classification). Main effects linear regression models measured association between individual health status measures and individual radiographic predictor variables. Results:Forty-five patients were analyzed (male, 15; female, 30; average age 40.5 ± 18.7 years; 14 low-grade, 31 high-grade). For low-grade slips, SVA had strong negative correlations with SF-12 mental component score (MCS), SRS-30 appearance, mental, and satisfaction domains (r = -0.57, r = -0.60, r = -0.58, r = -0.53, respectively; P < .05). For high-grade slips, slip angle had a moderate negative correlation with SF-12 MCS (r = -0.36; P = .05) and SVA had strong negative correlations with SF-12 physical component score (PCS), SRS-30 appearance and activity domains (r = -0.48, r = -0.48, r = -0.45; P < .05) and a moderate negative correlation with SRS-30 total (r = -0.37; P < .05). T1 pelvic angle had a moderate negative correlation with SF-12 PCS and SRS-30 appearance (r = -0.37, r = -0.36; P ≤ .05). For every 1° increase in PT, there was a 0.04-point decrease in SRS appearance, 0.05-point decrease in SRS activity, 0.06-point decrease in SRS satisfaction, and 0.04-point decrease in SRS total score (P < .05). Conclusion:Lumbosacral spondylolisthesis in adults negatively affects HRQoL. Multiple radiographic sagittal parameters negatively affect HRQoLs for patients with low- and high-grade slips. Improvement of sagittal parameters is an important goal of surgery for adults with lumbosacral spondylolisthesis

In Indonesia, the death customs of different ethnic group have different characteristics, customs and habits. Some are buried in a special area, burned (Ngaben - Balinese) and other methods. In every province in Indonesia there are one or two Chinese funeral home services that provide mourning services to families, start from bathing, makeup, providing coffins, preparing funerals and cremations, they also give services for traditional ceremonies, religion in accordance with the beliefs. A Chinese funeral home whose existence is very striking is in the middle of the city of Surakarta, namely THIONG TING. This study aimed to describe Chinese culture in death customs, religion, socio-culture in the community using THIONG TING funeral services, describe mourning service activities and facilities provided to funeral home service users. Data was collected using observations, interviews, data processing and presenting data analysis. The results of studies and research at the THIONG TING funeral home are very useful for researchers who have an interest in the cultural life of the Chinese community. James Ngugi without question is Kenya\u27s most prominent and most highly regarded novelist to date. Of the same generation of writers as Achebe, Armah, Soyinka, and Owoonor of West Africa, Ngugi, like them, after a local university education, went abroad for advanced work. In 1964 at Leeds, Ngugi published his novel Weep Not, Child, written when he was a student at Makerere. Shortly thereafter, in 1965, he published The River Between which he had composed even earlier. With A Grain of Wheat the writer completed in 1967 a kind of trilogy, depicting for a western readership a literary explanation and clarification of the historic Kenyan struggle for independence. These novels, written in English, and some plays and short stories brought Ngugi an award in 1965 at the Dakar Festival of Negro Arts and subsequent critical acclaim and broad readership

Ngũgĩ wa Thiong\u27o was born the fifth child of the third of his father\u27s four wives; he had twenty-seven siblings. The family lived in Kamiriithu Village, twelve miles northeast of Nairobi, Kenya. His father, Thiong\u27o wa Nducu, was a peasant farmer dispossessed by the British Imperial Land Act of 1915 and therefore forced to become a squatter on property meted out to one of the few native Africans who had profited from the act. His father\u27s condition was similar to that of most of the Kikuyu with whom Ngũgĩ grew up

Early Surgery for Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury: Where Are We Now?

    Get PDF
Study Design: Narrative review. Objective: There is a strong biological rationale to perform early decompression after traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). With an enlarging clinical evidence base, most spine surgeons internationally now favor early decompression for the majority of SCI patients; however, a number of pertinent questions remain surrounding this therapy. Methods: A narrative review evaluating the status of early surgery for SCI. In particular, we addressed the following questions: (1) Which patients stand to benefit most from early surgery? 2) What is the most appropriate time threshold defining early surgery? Results: Although heterogeneity exists, the evidence generally seems to support early surgery. While the best evidence exists for cervical SCI, there is insufficient data to support a differential effect for early surgery depending on neurological level or injury severity. When comparing thresholds to define early versus late surgery-including a later threshold (48-72 hours), an earlier threshold (24 hours), and an ultra-early threshold (8-12 hours)-the 2 earlier time points seem to be associated with the greatest potential for improved outcomes. However, existing prehospital and hospital logistics pose barriers to early surgery in a significant proportion of patients. An overview of recommendations from the recent AOSpine guidelines is provided. Conclusion: In spite of increasing acceptance of early surgery post SCI, further research is needed to (1) identify subgroups of patients who stand to derive particular benefit-in particular to develop more evidence-based approaches for central cord syndrome and (2) investigate the efficacy and feasibility of ultra-early surgery targeting more aggressive timelines

This study aimed to examine the influence of some demographic factors on entrepreneurial intention of several University students in Jakarta. The sample was 180 respondents and the analytical technique used in this study was binary logistic regression. The results show that students at the University of Mercu Buana, University of Indonusa Esa Unggul, Trisakti University, and Binus University  who already have experience in entrepreneurship, with parents’ profession as an entrepreneur, and the ethnic background is Minang or Thiong Hwa have more influence on entrepreneurial intentions than students who do not have experience of entrepreneurship, the profession of his parents as an employee, and the ethnic background is not the Minang and Thiong Hwa. However, no considerable influence on entrepreneurship intense when students are men and women, and students are already taking entrepreneurship courses or not.
