Design and fabrication of a moving robotic glove system

    Get PDF
This paper presents the research, design, and manufacture of a robotic hand to control movement with a glove. The moving glove-controlled robotic hand is based on two main parts: the hand mechanism and the control circuit. The control glove unit includes an Arduino nRF24l01 microcontroller module and five flex sensors for five fingers. These sensors are used to collect data about the curvature of each finger. Then those data will be received by the Arduino microcontroller and sent by the nRF24l01 module. The hand's microcontroller will process that information and control five servo motors so that the five fingers of the robotic hand are moved. The result of this research is to produce a robotic hand that accurately simulates the curvature of a user's finger and mimics the motion of a glove well. Moreover, the robot hand can grip objects of different sizes (from 0.1 to 1 kg) and shapes, from which this robot helps users easily manipulate objects

Shadowing effects for continuum and discrete deposition models

We study the dynamical evolution of the deposition interface using both discrete and continuous models for which shadowing effects are important. We explain why continuous and discrete models implying both only shadowing deposition do not give the same result and propose a continuous model which allow to recover the result of the discrete one exhibiting a strong columnar morphology

Wait times in hip and knee replacement: single-entry model and prioritization

    Get PDF
The single-entry model (SEM) in healthcare consolidates waiting lists through a single point-of-entry and patients can see the next available surgeon from a pooled available provider based on the patient’s urgent levels. Prioritization is used to ensure that patients with higher urgent levels may access care quickly. The SEM for hip and knee replacement surgery in the Eastern Health region of Newfoundland and Labrador showed a reduction in wait times for consultation by priority levels. Little is known about the improvement in wait times for surgery and the chance of receiving consultation and surgery within the national benchmarks by priority levels. This study aimed to examine the SEM’s role in timely access to orthopedic services and evaluate an association between factors and receiving consultation and surgery within the national benchmarks through the SEM. Survival analysis was conducted to estimate wait times, examine factors impacting wait times for hip and knee replacement. The data used were adult patients referred to the Orthopedic Central Intake clinic in the Eastern Health region for a total hip or knee arthroplasty assessment between 2011-2019. Logistic regression analysis was used to explore the association between these factors and the receiving consultation and surgery within benchmarks. The study revealed that hip or knee replacement patients with high urgent had more likely to see an orthopedic surgeon for consultation than those with low urgent. Hip or knee replacement patients with priority 1 were more likely to have a consultation within 90 days than their counterparts. Priority levels were not significantly related to the likelihood of having surgery since the decision to surgery was made for both hip and knee. The likelihood of receiving a knee replacement surgery within 182 days was nonsignificant among patients with priority 1, priority 2, and priority 3, while hip replacement patients with priority 3 were more likely to have surgery within 182 days than those with a high priority level. Choosing the next available surgeon shortened wait times for consultation and improved the likelihood of receiving consultation within 90 days. However, this choice was less likely to have surgery within 182 days than choosing a specific surgeon. Incomplete initial referral forms prolonged wait times for consultation but insignificantly impacted the probability of having consultation within 90 days. Patients with knee osteoarthritis were less likely to have consultations within 90 days than patients with other arthritis disorders. This study explored the timely improvement of access to consultation for hip and knee replacement by priority levels and factors impacting wait times through the SEM. An association between wait time for surgery and priority levels was not found in this study, whereas hip replacement patients with low priority were more likely to receive surgery within the benchmark of 182 days than those with high priority. Further studies are needed to investigate this

Currently, pupils being left in the classroom, in the house or in the car is happening a lot, causing unintended incidents. The reason is that parents or caregivers of pupils go through busy and tiring working hours, so they accidentally leave pupils in the car, indoors, or forget to pick up students at school. In this paper, we developed an algorithm to recognize students who use neural networks and warn managers, testing on a model integrated Raspberry Pi 4 kit programmed on Python in combination with cameras, sim modules, and actuators to detect and alert abandoned pupils to the manager to take timely remedial measures and avoid unfortunate circumstances. With the ability to manage students, the system collects and processes images and data on student information for artificial intelligence (AI) systems to recognize when operating. The system of executive structures serves to warn when students are left in the car, in the classroom, or in the house to avoid unintended incidents or safety risks

Production of gamma-aminobutyric acid by lactic acid bacteria of marine origin from Vietnam

    Get PDF
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a non-proteinogenic amino acid, which functions as a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. GABA has been shown to have several positive effects on human health, including reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation. In this study, various fermented fish products were screened for their ability to produce GABA. A total of 35 acid lactic producing strains were isolated from 8 samples of marine organism, 10 strains were found to have GABA-producing abilities. These strains were identified using 16S rDNA sequencing. The GABA concentrations produced by the 10 isolates ranged from 725 to 5590 mg/L. Lactobacillus brevis GB111 is the best isolated GABA producing strain, with a conversion rate up to 90.3%, which suggests that these strains may have potential applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries as a source of GABA

The Distribution of Microplastics in Beach Sand in Tien Giang Province and Vung Tau City, Vietnam

    Get PDF
Microplastics threaten the ecosystem because of undesirable properties such as non-biodegradability, easy-to-absorb persistant organic compounds, etc. They are found worldwide in marine, fresh water and beach sand environments. In this study, microplastics in beach sand samples from two sites in Tien Giang province and two sites in Vung Tau city were investigated. The results showed that the microplastics amount was 0 to 295 pieces/kg dry sand and they mainly distributed near estuarine areas. Microplastics were more prevalent at bathing sites than non-bathing sites. In Tien Giang fragments were the most dominant among the three types of shapes (fragments, fibers, granules) at 60.2%. In Vung Tau granules were most prevalent at 71.7%. The composition of the plastics was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. It was revealed that PE, PP and PS were the main types of plastics found in the sampling sites.

Magnesium hydroxyapatite coatings (MgHAp) were deposited on the surface of 316L stainless steel (316L SS) substrates by electrodeposition technique. Different concentrations of Mg2+ ion were incorporated into the apatite structure by adding Mg(NO3)2 into electrolyte solution containing 3×10-2 M Ca(NO3)2, 1.8×10-2 M NH4H2PO4 and   6×10-2 M NaNO3. With Mg2+ concentration 1×10-3 M, the obtained coatings have 0.2 wt% Mg2+. The influences of scanning potential ranges, scanning times to deposit MgHAp coatings were researched. The analytical results FTIR, SEM, X-ray, EDX, thickness and adhension strength showed that MgHAp coatings were single phase of HAp, fibrous shapes, thickness 8.1 µm and adhesion strength 7.20 MPa at the scanning potential ranges of 0÷-1.7 V/SCE and scanning times of 5 scans. Get PDF
In order to provide reliable indicators of the spawning season of captive helicopter catfish (Wallago attu), this study evaluated the temporal variation in gonadosomatic index (GSI), plasma levels of testosterone (T), and 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) in male broodstock in captivity. GSI was estimated as the percentage of the relative weight of testis to total body weight. Plasma levels of sex steroids were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (EIA). Testis samples were dehydrated and embedded in paraffin, then sectioned at 5 μm thickness. The highest level of T (402.1 ± 16.7 pg/mL) was found in June, followed by a peak in 11-KT level (76.9 ± 4.7 pg/mL) in May. Testes containing the highest concentrations of spermatozoa were observed from June to August. The GSI of males increased significantly from January to June and peaked in July (2.14%). Taken together, we conclude that the spawning season of captive helicopter catfish occurs from June to August. These results will contribute to the basic knowledge of the reproductive biology of helicopter catfish, which can be useful in artificial breeding
