SELECTION OF INDIGENOUS STRAINS (Paecilomyces lilacinus) PARASITIZE Meloidogyne spp. ISOLATED FROM BA RIA – VUNG TAU PROVINCE

    Get PDF
Twenty two Paecilomyces lilacinus strains were isolated from forest soils and black pepper rhizospheres in Ba Ria –Vung Tau Province. The ability to degrade chitin of PB 3.3, PB 2.9, QT2, and QT5 strains was high. The ability to degrade casein of PB 1.3, PB 2.10, KL5, and KL6 strains was efficient. And then, these strains were parasitized females and egg masses of Meloidogyne spp. in vitro. In female parasitism test, the rates of parasitizing female nematodes reached more than 50 % after treating for 2 days. Four strains of PB 2.10, PB 1.3, KL6 and QT5 belonged to the first group achieved the highest parasitic ( 90 %) effects on female after 3 days of incubation. In egg masses parasitism test, three strains of PB 1.3, PB 2.10 and QT5 exhibited 83.33 %, 75 % and 75 % parasitism on egg masses after 11 days of incubation. The rates of parasitizing female were higher than egg masses. Three selected strains from the experiments were PB 1.3, PB 2.10 and QT5.

Impacts of Payment for Forest Ecosystem Services on Local livelihoods in A Luoi District, Thua Thien Hue Province, Viet Nam

    Get PDF
This paper analyses the impacts of the national Payment for Forest Environmental Services (PFES) policy in A Luoi district, Thua Thien Hue province, Viet Nam. There are mixed impacts of PFES in A Luoi district. While some surveyed households have experienced increases in income since PFES, for many other incomes have fallen. Our findings show PFES impacts on local communities and individuals are limited because most forest areas are managed by state agencies, leaving only 17.9% of PFES payments being channeled to these groups, while the rest goes to state government agencies and commune people’s committees. This disparity in PFES payments has further widened the income gap between state agencies and local households.  PFES payments currently contribute little to household incomes, averaging only 2.64% of total earnings. PFES has little impact and additionality in advancing land tenure security and reducing natural forest product exploitation for generating income as impacts are similar to those found in non-PFES villages. PFES poverty reduction impacts vary from village to village, but in general, percentages of poor households receiving PFES payments range from 1% to 59%

Building forecast maps of water quaůity for main rivers and canals in Tien Giang province, Vietnam

    Get PDF
This study aims to enhance the mapping of forecast for water quality assessment in Mekong Delta provinces. The data from 32 sites from main rivers and canals in an area of around 2,482 km2 in Tien Giang Province, Vietnam, were used for calculation and mapping. The ArcGIS 9.3 software, Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) interpolation method, hydrologic data, and water quality parameters in March (2010-2014) were applied to build the maps showing 2020 water quality predictions for main rivers and canals in Tien Giang Province. The estimation was based on the Water Quality Index (WQI) with 6 parameters such as pH, total suspended solid (TSS), dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total nitrogen (T_N), and coliform. The results showed that water quality in the studied area in dry season will not be improved by the year 2020. The finding could be a scientific reference for the selection of effective approaches to improve water quality in main rivers and canals in Tien Giang Province

EFFECTS OF EXTENSIVE READING ON EFL LEARNERS’ WRITING PERFORMANCE

    Get PDF
Extensive Reading (ER) is considered as a good learning technique to enhance every skill in language learning. It is considered to assist the improvement of other skills of language learners especially English as a Foreign Language (EFL) leaners. This study is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of ER on EFL learners’ writing performance and to identify the EFL learners’ attitude towards the effects of ER on writing performance. The study recruited a group of 59 non-English majors at a public university in Vietnam. The participants were divided into two groups, i.e., experimental group and control group. The participants in the experimental group were assigned extensive reading materials as their homework to support their learning of writing meanwhile the participants in the control group were guided to write without the support of extensive reading materials. To check the differences of the participants’ writing ability before and after the intervention, pre-test and post-test were employed. A questionnaire was also delivered to the experimental group after the treatment. The results from the tests revealed that ER supported EFL learners in their writing performance. The experimental group had more significant enhancement. The results obtained from the questionnaire also indicated that the EFL learners had positive attitudes towards the use of extensive reading materials provided in their writing learning process.   Article visualizations

FRESHMAN EFL LEARNERS’ ANXIETY IN SPEAKING CLASSES AND COPING STRATEGIES

    Get PDF
This study aims to investigate what speaking anxiety freshman EFL learners encountered in their classes and what strategies they used to reduce their anxiety. A mixed methods approach was employed to collect the data, including a questionnaire following the quantitative method and individual semi-structured interviews following the qualitative method. The participants were 185 freshman EFL learners at several universities in the Mekong Delta. The combination of the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale developed by Horwitz, Horwitz & Cope (1986) and the theories about three kinds of anxiety proposed by Ellis (1994) was adapted to measure freshman EFL learners’ kinds of speaking anxiety in classes. Additionally, the five categories of coping strategies in Kondo and Ling (2004) were adapted to measure the participants’ coping strategies for reducing their speaking anxiety. The results of the study showed that the participants encountered all three kinds of speaking anxiety including trait anxiety, specific-situation anxiety, and state anxiety in classes. Furthermore, the study also indicated five kinds of strategies utilized by the participants to reduce their anxiety in speaking class namely preparation strategies, relaxation strategies, positive thinking strategies, peer-seeking strategies, and resignation strategies. From the results, it was also indicated that preparation strategies were used more frequently than the other strategies by the participants in speaking classes.  Article visualizations

Financial development in the countries of the regional comprehensive economic partnership

    Get PDF
This study has identified the factors affecting the financial development of a country, thereby measuring the financial development process of countries of The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership in the period 2000–2020 through the construction of the Index aggregate of Financial Development for these countries. The study used Principal Components Analysis to provide a more quantitative, synthetic and harmonized view of financial development when combining 13 different representative indicators, including to the share of the contribution of each of these indicators to the overall index. These indicators represent each group of intermediaries, financial institutions and financial market groups in terms of depth, efficiency and stability, helping to reflect all aspects of the financial system in a holistic way. This will contribute to a clearer definition of the role and relationship between financial development and economic growth in The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership’s countries, a relationship that is still poorly researched
