âThe poor manâs universityâ : a study on libraries, literacy and bookmobiles in Jamaica
The aim of this Masterâs Thesis is to examine the importance of literacy and reading in a country like Jamaica. What role do public libraries and bookmobiles play in promoting literacy, and how does this work correspond with the UNESCO public library manifesto? To answer this, interviews were conducted with nine Jamaican librarians, and study visits were made to libraries and bookmobiles. In addition, development plans, policy and other relevant documents were analyzed. The themes that emerged from the interviews and the different development plans were compared. These themes and the observations from the study visits were analyzed from the perspective of Amartya Senâs theories on development as freedom, in which greater freedom for people is seen both as the main goal of development and the most important means of development. The conclusions to be drawn from this are that both librarians and government consider literacy and information to be essential to development and economic growth in Jamaica. It is clear that libraries and bookmobiles have contributed to a more literate society and play an active part in the countryâs educational system. However, the informal nature of this contribution makes it difficult to estimate its actual extent. The activities of the public library service in Jamaica correspond very well with the UNESCO public library manifesto, even though it is not clearly stated in any policy documents that the manifesto is important and should be followed.UppsatsnivĂ„:
âHar du bara lekt idag?â â En studie kring lekens betydelse i förskolan och pedagogernas engagemang i barns lek
Syfte
engagemang i barns lek.
Metod
Empirin Àr hÀmtad frÄn tvÄ olika förskolor som Àr belÀgna i olika kommuner. Vi valde att anvÀnda oss av
respondentintervjuer för att besvara studiens syfte.
Resultat
Agitation in behavioural and psychological symtoms of dementia : nursing treatment to reduce agitation in people with cognitive disorder : a literature review
16 studier inkluderades i resultatet. Cognitive disorder is a collective term that includes several different diagnoses and in Sweden 20,000 - 25,000 people get diagnosed each year. The common factor for these diagnoses is the fact that they occur because of brain damages. Living with a cognitive disorder means that various cognitive functions fail. Nine out of ten with cognitive disorder are at some point affected by behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). One of these symptoms is agitation. BPSD causes a great deal of suffering for the diagnosed person and the family. Furthermore, it is often a great challenge for caregivers to give these individuals the correct care. To prevent and alleviate BPSD, nursing treatment is the first option. A step towards reducing suffering for the person is to increase knowledge of which nursing treatments can reduce agitation Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate which nursing treatment can have an effect on agitation in people with cognitive disorders. Method: A literature review was chosen to answer the aim of the study. The results have been based on quantitative studies that are a maximum of ten years old to map the latest research in the chosen field. Results: The result shows significant reduction of agitation in people with cognitive disorders using nursing treatment such as music therapy, physical activity, dog therapy, acupressure, light therapy and time spent in therapeutic garden. An increase in agitation was however seen during foot massage, but the increase was not significant. Conclusion: The results of the study show several useful non-pharmacological treatments that can be implemented in clinical care to reduce agitation in people with cognitive disorders. By using non-pharmacological treatment, the use of inappropriate drugs, which can have severe negative side effects, such as neuroleptics, can be reduced. The study may be useful to increasing the competence of concerned caregivers
Resultat: Analysen resulterade i fyra kategorier.
The boy in the striped pyjamas as a book to read aloud : How to use a novel for discussions about democratic values in school
This study examines the significance of reading aloud for work with values in school through an analysis of Pojken i randig pyjamas (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas). The analysis considers the themes and narrative technique of the texts. In this study, reading aloud is viewed as an opportunity for the teacher to read aloud to pupils from a work of literature. The book Pojken i randig pyjamas was selected for study because it is a book that is often chosen for reading aloud and it can lead to many discussions in the classroom. The results show that this book is suitable in many ways for reading aloud in the classroom. The study also finds that this book functions well as a basis for work with values. Although the book deals with the Holocaust, a topic that can be difficult for teachers and pupils to deal with in a good way, the study shows that this book, when the reading is followed by a discussion, can contribute to a broader understanding of both the Holocaust and the outlook on humanity

Structural relaxations of phospholipids and water in planar membranes
We have used dielectric spectroscopy and temperature modulated differential scanning calorimetryTMDSC to investigate the structural relaxation processes and phase transitions of water and lipidsin multilamellar, planar phospholipids. At low hydration levels we observe the main structuralrelaxation related to the glass transition of the phospholipids. With increasing water content a morepronounced pretransition, attributed to a gel to ripple phase transition, is observed in the TMDSCdata. In the proximity of this pretransition, a distinct change in the temperature dependence oralternatively a bifurcation into two processes is observed in the dielectric data. Around thistemperature a crossover in the long-range ionic conductivity across the membranes is also observed, which is one of the key parameters for biological membranes. Thus, the major dynamical changesdo not occur at the main, i.e., the gel to liquid structural phase transition, but at a pretransition thatoccurs roughly 20 K below the main transition
