W.B. Yeats described his friend, the dramatist John Millington Synge, in words stressing the relationship between Synge, the man of few words, and Synge, the man of a single place, Ireland, as “[t]hat rooted man, /Forgetting human words”. Synge wrote a considerable amount of travel literature on various places in Ireland, having travelled on foot the length and breadth of the island.  After some time spent on the European continent Europe, Synge returned to Ireland, and on the Aran Islands, through the translation from Gaelic into English of one of Ireland’s oldest legends, the story of Deirdre, he created his own language in which he wrote all his plays. This invention, a discovery of himself and the universal meaning of his work would not have been possible without his encounter with the isles of Aran Islands

Safety 2016 World Conference, TAMPERE, FINLANDE, 18-/09/2016 - 21/09/2016Abstract: Background In metropolitan France (63 million inhabitants), around 25,000 people die each year as a result of unintentional injuries. Deaths from home and leisure injuries (HLI) are more frequent than from road traffic injuries (RTI), followed by occupational injuries (OI). The objective of this study was to measure and describe the epidemiological characteristics of deaths due to unintentional injuries in metropolitan France from 2000 to 2012. Methods: HLI data come from death certificates, with an exhaustive collection. Causes of death are coded using the external causes of injury codes of the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision. The results are expressed in numbers, crude death rates, and age-adjusted death rates. RTI data come from police records[...]. The estimation of the number of fatal OI was established from the data of the social insurance compensation funds for workers. Results: In 2012, 21,470 deaths due to HLI occurred in France. Almost half of these deaths were due to falls, particularly frequent among the elderly. Between 2000 and 2012, a decrease of 2.2% (p < 0,001) of the annual mortality rate was registered. In 2011, RTI resulted in 3,793 deaths. Between 2001 and 2010, a very important reduction in road fatalities was noticed: - 52%, mostly the consequence of the large implementation of automated speed controls during that decade. As regards OI, the annual number of deaths is estimated at 1,557 (95% CI: 1,478-1,640) for the period 2002-2004. Conclusions: Despite the decrease between 2000 and 2012, injuries remain a significant cause of death in France. Most of these deaths could be avoided with adapted prevention, regulation and policy measures

Continuous Interdomain Orientation Distributions Reveal Components of Binding Thermodynamics

The flexibility of biological macromolecules is an important structural determinant of function. Unfortunately, the correlations between different motional modes are poorly captured by discrete ensemble representations. Here, we present new ways to both represent and visualize correlated interdomain motions. Interdomain motions are determined directly from residual dipolar couplings, represented as a continuous conformational distribution, and visualized using the disk-on-sphere representation. Using the disk-on-sphere representation, features of interdomain motions, including correlations, are intuitively visualized. The representation works especially well for multidomain systems with broad conformational distributions. This analysis also can be extended to multiple probability density modes, using a Bingham mixture model. We use this new paradigm to study the interdomain motions of staphylococcal protein A, which is a key virulence factorcontributing to the pathogenicity of Staphylococcus aureus. We capture the smooth transitions between important states and demonstrate the utility of continuous distribution functions for computing the reorientational components of binding thermodynamics. Such insights allow for the dissection of the dynamic structural components of functionally important intermolecular interactions

Universal versus economically polarized change in age at first birth : a French–British comparison

France and the United Kingdom in the 1980s and 1990s represented two contrasting institutional models for the integration of employment and motherhood: The ‘universalistic’ regime type offering subsidized child-care and maternity-leave benefits at all income levels; and the ‘means-testing’ regime type mainly offering income-tested benefits for single mothers. Using the two countries as comparative case studies, we develop and test the hypothesis that the socio-economic gradient of fertility timing has become increasingly mediated by family policy. We find increasing polarization in age at first birth by pre-childbearing occupation in the U.K. but not in France. Early first births persisted in the U.K. only among women in low-skill occupations, while shifts towards increasingly late first births occurred in clerical/secretarial occupations and above. Age at first birth increased across all occupations in France, but was still much earlier on average than for all but low-skill British mothers

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) serological markers and the prevalence of VDRL positive subjects in a population of refugees of various nationalities, living in the Asylum Seeker Centre in Bari Palese, Southern Italy.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The study was carried out in the period May-July 2008 and recruited only voluntarily enrolled healthy refugees. HBsAg, anti-HBc, anti-HCV and anti-HIV virus antibodies were detected. VDRL syphilis screening was also carried out on the serum samples.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 529 refugees, 442 males and 87 females, aged between 7 and 52 years, were studied. Of these, 510 were from Africa and 19 from Asia.</p> <p>Forty-four individuals (8.3%) were HBsAg positive and 241 (45.6%) were anti-HBc positive. A total of 24 (4.5%) individuals were anti-HCV positive. Eight asylum seekers (1.5%) were HIV positive. VDRL tests were performed on 269 subjects and 4 (1.5%) were positive. 12.3% of the study population had serological markers of chronic and transmissible infections with potential blood-borne or sexual transmission.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In Italy, a suitable protocol is necessary for the early diagnosis of infectious diseases on entering Asylum Centres, so allowing the adoption of prevention measures to safeguard the health of the individuals, the residents and workers in the Centres and the general population.</p

Developed countries are now deeply concerned with evaluation, either at a global level (regarding school cost, management and performances) at an intermediate level (regional inequalities), at the level of schools (that is, the individual efficiency of a school, how to assess it), or inside the classrooms (to support the teachers in their individualized approach of educational practice). At these distinct levels the Department of Assessment and Prospective of the Ministry of Education has provided during the last years decisive contributions wich help us to "evaluate the present state of the French educational system. Besides the educational experiments and innovations are regularly assessed. Thelot Claude. A maximum entropy-based approach for the description of the conformational ensemble of calmodulin from paramagnetic NMR

    No full text
Characterizing protein dynamics is an essential step towards a better understanding of protein function. Experimentally, we can access information about protein dynamics from paramagnetic NMR data such as pseudocontact shifts, which integrate ensemble-averaged information about the motion of proteins. In this report, we recognize that the relative position of the two domains of calmodulin can be represented as the evolution of one of the domains in the space of Euclidean motions. From this perspective, we suggest a maximum entropy-based approach for finding a probability distribution on SE(3) satisfying experimental NMR measurements. While sampling of SE(3) is performed with the ensemble generator EOM, the proposed framework can be extended to uniform sampling of the space of Euclidean motions. At the end of this study, we find that the most represented protein conformations for calmodulin corresponds to conformations in which both protein domains are in close contact, despite being largely different from each other. Such a representation agrees with the random coil linker model, and sharply differs with the extended crystal structure of calmodulin.Honors thesi
