    Formation of optimal-order necklace modes in one-dimensional random photonic superlattices

    We study the appearance of resonantly coupled optical modes, optical necklaces, in Anderson localized one-dimensional random superlattices through numerical calculations of the accumulated phase. The evolution of the optimal necklace order m* shows a gradual shift towards higher orders with increasing the sample size. We derive an empirical formula that predicts m* and discuss the situation when in a sample length L the number of degenerate in energy resonances exceeds the optimal one. We show how the \emph{extra} resonances are pushed out to the miniband edges of the necklace, thus reducing the order of the latter by multiples of two.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    This article draws on ethnographic research into a state-funded homecare service in rural Russia. The article discusses intersections between care, work and kinship in the relationships between homecare workers and their elderly wards and explores the ways in which references to kinship, as a means of authenticating paid care and explaining its emotional content, reinforce public and private oppositions while doing little to relieve the tensions and conflicts of care work. The discussion brings together detailed empirical insights into local ideologies and practices as a way of generating new theoretical perspectives, which will be of relevance beyond the particular context of study

    Historical-institutionalist perspectives on the development of the EU budget system

    The EU budget has only recently started to feature in theories of European integration. Studies typically adopt a historical-institutionalist framework, exploring notions such as path dependency. They have, however, generally been rather aggregated, or coarse-grained, in their approach. The EU budget has thus been treated as a single entity rather than a series of inter-linked institutions. This paper seeks to address these lacunae by adopting a fine-grained approach. This enables us to emphasize the connections that exist between EU budgetary institutions, in both time and space. We show that the initial set of budgetary institutions was unable, over time, to achieve consistently their treaty-based objectives. In response, rather than reform these institutions at potentially high political cost, additional institutions were layered on top of the extant structures. We thus demonstrate how some EU budgetary institutions have remained unchanged, whilst others have been added or changed over time

    Volcano dome dynamics at Mount St. Helens:Deformation and intermittent subsidence monitored by seismicity and camera imagery pixel offsets

    The surface deformation field measured at volcanic domes provides insights into the effects of magmatic processes, gravity-and gas-driven processes, and the development and distribution of internal dome structures. Here we study short-term dome deformation associated with earthquakes at Mount St. Helens, recorded by a permanent optical camera and seismic monitoring network. We use Digital Image Correlation (DIC) to compute the displacement field between successive images and compare the results to the occurrence and characteristics of seismic events during a 6 week period of dome growth in 2006. The results reveal that dome growth at Mount St. Helens was repeatedly interrupted by short-term meter-scale downward displacements at the dome surface, which were associated in time with low-frequency, large-magnitude seismic events followed by a tremor-like signal. The tremor was only recorded by the seismic stations closest to the dome. We find a correlation between the magnitudes of the camera-derived displacements and the spectral amplitudes of the associated tremor. We use the DIC results from two cameras and a high-resolution topographic model to derive full 3-D displacement maps, which reveals internal dome structures and the effect of the seismic activity on daily surface velocities. We postulate that the tremor is recording the gravity-driven response of the upper dome due to mechanical collapse or depressurization and fault-controlled slumping. Our results highlight the different scales and structural expressions during growth and disintegration of lava domes and the relationships between seismic and deformation signals

    Critical Josephson Current in a Model Pb/YBa_2Cu_3O_7 Junction

    In this article we consider a simple model for a c--axis Pb/YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta} Josephson junction. The observation of a nonzero current in such a junction by Sun et al. [A. G. Sun, D. A. Gajewski, M. B. Maple, R. C. Dynes, Phys. Rev. Lett. 72, 2267 (1994)] has been taken as evidence against d--wave superconductivity in YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}. We suggest, however, that the pairing interaction in the CuO_2 planes may well be d--wave but that the CuO chains destroy the tetragonal symmetry of the system. We examine two ways in which this happens. In a simple model of an incoherent junction, the chains distort the superconducting condensate away from d_{x^2-y^2} symmetry. In a specular junction the chains destroy the tetragonal symmetry of the tunneling matrix element. In either case, the loss of tetragonal symmetry results in a finite Josephson current.     A comparative framework: how broadly applicable is a 'rigorous' critical junctures framework?

    The paper tests Hogan and Doyle's (2007, 2008) framework for examining critical junctures. This framework sought to incorporate the concept of ideational change in understanding critical junctures. Until its development, frameworks utilized in identifying critical junctures were subjective, seeking only to identify crisis, and subsequent policy changes, arguing that one invariably led to the other, as both occurred around the same time. Hogan and Doyle (2007, 2008) hypothesized ideational change as an intermediating variable in their framework, determining if, and when, a crisis leads to radical policy change. Here we test this framework on cases similar to, but different from, those employed in developing the exemplar. This will enable us determine whether the framework's relegation of ideational change to a condition of crisis holds, or, if ideational change has more importance than is ascribed to it by this framework. This will also enable us determined if the framework itself is robust, and fit for the purposes it was designed to perform — identifying the nature of policy change

    Interplane magnetic coupling effects in the multilattice compound Y_2Ba_4Cu_7O_{15}

    We investigate the interplane magnetic coupling of the multilattice compound Y_2Ba_4Cu_7O_{15} by means of a bilayer Hubbard model with inequivalent planes. We evaluate the spin response, effective interaction and the intra- and interplane spin-spin relaxation times within the fluctuation exchange approximation. We show that strong in-plane antiferromagnetic fluctuations are responsible for a magnetic coupling between the planes, which in turns leads to a tendency of the fluctuation in the two planes to equalize. This equalization effect grows whit increasing in-plane antiferromagnetic fluctuations, i. e., with decreasing temperature and decreasing doping, while it is completely absent when the in-layer correlation length becomes of the order of one lattice spacing.     d-Wave Model for Microwave Response of High-Tc Superconductors

    We develop a simple theory of the electromagnetic response of a d- wave superconductor in the presence of potential scatterers of arbitrary s-wave scattering strength and inelastic scattering by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. In the clean London limit, the conductivity of such a system may be expressed in "Drude" form, in terms of a frequency-averaged relaxation time. We compare predictions of the theory with recent data on YBCO and BSSCO crystals and on YBCO films. While fits to penetration depth measurements are promising, the low temperature behavior of the measured microwave conductivity appears to be in disagreement with our results.     Very high rotational frequencies and band termination in 73Br

    Rotational bands in 73Br have been investigated up to spins of 65/2 using the EUROBALL III spectrometer. One of the negative-parity bands displays the highest rotational frequency 1.85 MeV reported to date in nuclei with mass number greater than 25. At high frequencies, the experimental dynamic moment of inertia for all bands decrease to very low values, indicating a loss of collectivity. The bands are described in the configuration-dependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model. The calculations indicate that one of the negative-parity bands is observed up to its terminating single-particle state at spin 63/2.
