The youth of today are raised in a strange and wonderful world. The threat of atomic war and the destruction of the entire world is no longer science fiction. All this is mixed with the knowledge of outerspace, rockets to the moon, electric ranges, automatic television, and home intercoms. The modern pace is rapid, and the pressures are great, with no indication of improvement. From the day of his conception, the child of today is expected to be precocious, and to go on to a great and glorious career in medicine, law, or nuclear physics. All this takes intensive training of the mind. However, it is now being increasingly realized that this also indicates an increased emphasis on the physical development of our youth

A Twenty-First-Century Olympic and Amateur Sports Act

Recent scandals involving national governing bodies for sport and allegations of athlete abuse have captured media attention. The most recent, focusing on the actions of USA Gymnastics, prompted Congress to propose legislation to require better protections for Olympic Movement athletes. Signed into law on February 14, 2018, the Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act of 2017 designates the United States Center for SafeSport (SafeSport) as the independent organization charged with exercising jurisdiction over the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and sport national governing bodies to safeguard amateur athletes against all forms of abuse. Congress\u27s instincts in this regard are admirable, and the empowerment of SafeSport is critically important. However, this Article asserts that the issue targeted by the recently enacted legislation must be viewed in the context of the overall regulation of Olympic and amateur sport in the United States. In doing so, Congress should consider more comprehensive reform that goes beyond the issue of athlete abuse. Instead, Congress should further amend the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act, the statute establishing the USOC and regulating the US Olympic program, to address the new realities of Olympic and amateur sport in the United States. Specifically, this Article asserts that the statute should be amended to require reforms in three areas: athlete health and well-being, whistleblowing, and gender equity in the US Olympic program. In addition, this Article argues that Congress should enact a true amateur sports act, with a primary feature being the creation of an entity charged with developing an agenda and reforms for youth and amateur (non-Olympic) sports

New Approach to School Health Initiatives: Using Fitness Measures Instead of Body Mass Index to Evaluate Outcomes

Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service provided elementary school students with a program that included a noncompetitive physical activity component: circuit training that combined cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility activities without requiring high skill levels. The intent was to improve fitness without focusing on body mass index as an indicator of fitness. Youths (111) in grades 3–5 underwent President\u27s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition testing at baseline and program completion. Significant improvements were observed in average fitness measures among youths who participated in the circuit training. Extension professionals looking for new tools to use with school-based physical activity programs may consider circuit training as a noncompetitive means of improving youth physical fitness and fitness measures as more appropriate outcome indicators

There are many health related benefits of participating in regular physical activity. A well-designed elementary physical education program will promote lifetime physical activity that may reduce the risk of disease. In implementing a quality curriculum for physical education, educators need to take in to account the standards when deciding the direction for their curriculum (NASPE, 2005). According to the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (2008), physical education includes curriculum, instruction and assessment all implemented together. This project addresses the need for meaningful and convenient assessment tools
