    Turbulent separated flow past a backward-facing step: A critical evaluation of two-equation turbulence models

    The ability of two-equation models to accurately predict separated flows is analyzed from a combined theoretical and computational standpoint. Turbulent flow past a backward facing step is chosen as a test case in an effort to resolve the variety of conflicting results that were published during the past decade concerning the performance of two-equation models. It is found that the errors in the reported predictions of the k-epsilon model have two major origins: (1) numerical problems arising from inadequate resolution, and (2) inaccurate predictions for normal Reynolds stress differences arising from the use of an isotropic eddy viscosity. Inadequacies in near wall modelling play a substantially smaller role. Detailed calculations are presented which strongly indicate the standard k-epsilon model - when modified with an independently calibrated anisotropic eddy viscosity - can yield surprisingly good predictions for the backstep problem

    Analysis of an RNG based turbulence model for separated flows

    A two-equation turbulence model of the K-epsilon type was recently derived by using Renormalization Group (RNG) methods. It was later reported that this RNG based model yields substantially better predictions than the standard K-epsilon model for turbulent flow over a backward facing step - a standard test case used to benchmark the performance of turbulence models in separated flows. The improvements obtained from the RNG K-epsilon model were attributed to the better treatment of near wall turbulence effects. In contrast to these earlier claims, it is shown in this paper that the original version of the RNG K-epsilon model substantially underpredicts the reattachment point in the backstep problem. This is a deficiency that is traced to the modeling of the production of dissipation term. However, with the most recent improvements in the RNG K-epsilon model, excellent results for the backstep problem are now obtained

    Development of turbulence models for shear flows by a double expansion technique

    Turbulence models are developed by supplementing the renormalization group (RNG) approach of Yakhot and Orszag with scale expansions for the Reynolds stress and production of dissipation terms. The additional expansion parameter (eta) is the ratio of the turbulent to mean strain time scale. While low-order expansions appear to provide an adequate description of the Reynolds stress, no finite truncation of the expansion for the production of dissipation term in powers of eta suffices - terms of all orders must be retained. Based on these ideas, a new two-equation model and Reynolds stress transport model are developed for turbulent shear flows. The models are tested for homogeneous shear flow and flow over a backward facing step. Comparisons between the model predictions and experimental data are excellent

    Protective role of vitamin E on drug induced neuropathy

    Background: The objective of this study was to look into the protective role of vitamin E (Vit.E) on drug‑induced neuropathy.Methods: The study involved 18 albino rats; rats were divided into 3 Groups; Group 1 ‑ control (n = 6), Group 2 - anti‑leukemic drugs treated rats (n = 6), Group 3 - anti‑leukemic drugs and Vit.E treated rats (n = 6). Anti‑leukemic drugs which included vincristine (VCR), L‑asparaginase (L‑Asp), doxorubicin (ADR), prednisolone (PDN), were administered to Group 2 and Group 3 rats according to acute lymphoblastic leukemia treatment regimen (MCP841). Group 3 rats were given in addition to the anti‑leukemic drugs, Vit.E (100 mg/kg bodyweight/orally) daily. Tests for neuropathy were done using tail clip method, tail flick method, hot plate method on the 2nd week and tail clip method on 4th week of therapy.Results: At the end of 2nd week by tail clip method and tail flick method the mean reaction time of the anti‑leukemic drugs alone treated group (Group 2) was increased showing the development of neuropathy. The mean reaction time of the anti‑leukemic drugs + Vit.E treated group (Group 3) showed a reduction in the reaction time, showing the protective role of Vitamin E. Hot plate method done at the end of 2nd week showed a decrease in mean reaction time in Group 2 rats compared with Group 3. This could be due to the hyperthermalgesia by VCR. Group 3 was protected by Vit.E.Conclusion: Observations showed a protective role of Vit.E on drug induced neuropathy

    Sonification of Flow Instabilities in CFD Aneurysm Models

    Paper presented at 2018 Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineers International Congress, 27-30 May 2018.Recent investigations using image-based computational flow dynamics (CFD) have revealed turbulent-like blood flow instabilities (hemodynamics) within intracranial cerebral aneurysms and surrounding vasculature, which may contribute to aneurysm initiation, growth, and rupture. We describe a method derived from spectral decomposition of flow for inspecting and characterizing these “turbulent-like” hemodynamic structures in intracranial aneurysms by sonification of CFD generated data. Motivated by auscultation techniques, the current research seeks to address the limitations of conventional CFD animations by allowing the user to listen to complex flow patterns that are often difficult to discern visually. In the process, the proposed method of sonification is successfully applied to a series of datasets resulting from highfidelity numerical simulations of intracranial aneurysms. The resulting framework is shown to be highly efficient in performing parametric sonification in real time

    A survey of emergency department use in patients with cyclic vomiting syndrome

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS), a chronic disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of vomiting, is frequently unrecognized and is associated with high utilization of emergency department (ED) services.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A web-based survey was posted on the Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome Association (CVSA) website to assess utilization of ED services in patients with CVS.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of 251 respondents, 104 (41.4%) were adult CVS patients and 147 (58.6%) were caregivers of pediatric and adult patients. In the adult group, the median number of ED visits for CVS symptoms was 15(range 1 - 200), with a median of 7 ED visits prior to a diagnosis of CVS (range 0 - 150). In the caregiver group, the median number of ED visits was 10 (range 1 - 175) and the median number of ED visits prior to a diagnosis of CVS was 5 (range 0 - 65). CVS was not diagnosed in the ED in 89/104 (93%) adults and 119/147 (93%) patients in the caregiver group. CVS was not recognized in the ED in 84/95 (88%) of adults and 97/122 (80%) of patients in the caregiver group, despite an established diagnosis of CVS.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>There is a sub-group of adult and pediatric CVS patients who are high utilizers of ED services and CVS is not recognized in the ED in the majority of patients. Improved efforts to educate ED physicians are indicated to optimize treatment of patients with CVS and to decrease potential overuse of ED services.</p

    Anaphylatoxin C3a receptors in asthma

    The complement system forms the central core of innate immunity but also mediates a variety of inflammatory responses. Anaphylatoxin C3a, which is generated as a byproduct of complement activation, has long been known to activate mast cells, basophils and eosinophils and to cause smooth muscle contraction. However, the role of C3a in the pathogenesis of allergic asthma remains unclear. In this review, we examine the role of C3a in promoting asthma. Following allergen challenge, C3a is generated in the lung of subjects with asthma but not healthy subjects. Furthermore, deficiency in C3a generation or in G protein coupled receptor for C3a abrogates allergen-induced responses in murine models of pulmonary inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness. In addition, inhibition of complement activation or administration of small molecule inhibitors of C3a receptor after sensitization but before allergen challenge inhibits airway responses. At a cellular level, C3a stimulates robust mast cell degranulation that is greatly enhanced following cell-cell contact with airway smooth muscle (ASM) cells. Therefore, C3a likely plays an important role in asthma primarily by regulating mast cell-ASM cell interaction
