An Improved molecular tool for distinguishing monoecious and dioedious Hydrilla
Two biotypes of hydrilla [Hydrilla verticillata(L.f.) Royle]
occur in the United States, a dioecious type centered
in the southeast and a monoecious type in the central Atlantic and northeastern states. Ecosystem managers need tools to distinguish the types as the ranges of each type expand and begin to overlap. A molecular tool using the randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) procedure is available but its use is limited by a need for reference samples. We describe an alternative molecular tool which uses âuniversal primersâ to sequence the trnL intron and trnL-F intergenic spacer of the chloroplast genome. This sequence yields three differences between the biotypes (two gaps and one single nucleotide polymorphism). A primer has been designed which ends in a gap that shows up only in the dioecious plant. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using this primer produces a product for the monoecious but not the dioecious plant
Equidistribution of polynomial sequences in function fields, with applications
We prove a function field analog of Weyl's classical theorem on
equidistribution of polynomial sequences. Our result covers the case when the
degree of the polynomial is greater than or equal to the characteristic of the
field, which is a natural barrier when applying the Weyl differencing process
to function fields. We also discuss applications to van der Corput and
intersective sets in function fields.Comment: 24 page
Seed Longevity of Melaleuca quinquenervia: A Burial Experiment in South Florida
Burial and removal techniques with seed bags were used
to examine the viability and longevity of
Melaleuca quinquenervia
seeds at four field sites representing different soil types
and hydrological conditions in South Florida. Seed viability
was determined over different burial durations in the soil
through a combination of germination tests and 2,3,5-triphenyl-
tetrazolium chloride (TTC) treatments. Control seeds
kept dry at 25 C in the laboratory maintained same viability
of ca. 15% over the 3-year study. In the field, seed viability decreased
with increased burial duration.(PDF has 4 pages.
Blockchain security and applications
Cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, have proven to be highly successful. In a cryptocurrency system, transactions and ownership data are stored digitally in a ledger that uses blockchain technology. This technology has the potential to revolutionize the future of financial transactions and decentralized applications. Blockchains have a layered architecture that enables their unique method of authenticating transactions. In this research, we examine three layers, each with its own distinct functionality: the network layer, consensus layer, and application layer. The network layer is responsible for exchanging data via a peer-to-peer (P2P) network. In this work, we present a practical yet secure network design. We also study the security and performance of the network and how it affects the overall security and performance of blockchain systems. The consensus layer is in charge of generating and ordering the blocks, as well as guaranteeing that everyone agrees. We study the existing Proof-of-stake (PoS) protocols, which follow a single-extension design framework. We present an impossibility result showing that those single-extension protocols cannot achieve standard security properties (e.g., common prefix) and the best possible unpredictability if the honest players control less than 73\% stake. To overcome this, we propose a new multi-extension design framework. The application layer consists of programs (e.g., smart contracts) that users can use to build decentralized applications. We construct a protocol on the application layer to enhance the security of federated learning
Disruption of Vitamin D and Calcium Signaling in Keratinocytes Predisposes to Skin Cancer.
1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D), the active metabolite of vitamin D, and calcium regulate epidermal differentiation. 1,25(OH)2D exerts its effects through the vitamin D receptor (VDR), a transcription factor in the nuclear hormone receptor family, whereas calcium acts through the calcium sensing receptor (Casr), a membrane bound member of the G protein coupled receptor family. We have developed mouse models in which the Vdr and Casr have been deleted in the epidermis ((epid) Vdr (-â-) and (epid) Casr (-â-)). Both genotypes show abnormalities in calcium induced epidermal differentiation in vivo and in vitro, associated with altered hedgehog (HH) and ÎČ-catenin signaling that when abnormally expressed lead to basal cell carcinomas (BCC) and trichofolliculomas, respectively. The Vdr (-â-) mice are susceptible to tumor formation following UVB or chemical carcinogen exposure. More recently we found that the keratinocytes from these mice over express long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) oncogenes such as H19 and under express lncRNA tumor suppressors such as lincRNA-21. Spontaneous tumors have not been observed in either the (epid) Vdr (-â-) or (epid) Casr (-â-). But in mice with epidermal specific deletion of both Vdr and Casr ((epid) Vdr (-â-)/(epid) Casr (-â-) [DKO]) tumor formation occurs spontaneously when the DKO mice are placed on a low calcium diet. These results demonstrate important interactions between vitamin D and calcium signaling through their respective receptors that lead to cancer when these signals are disrupted. The roles of the ÎČ-catenin, hedgehog, and lncRNA pathways in predisposing the epidermis to tumor formation when vitamin D and calcium signaling are disrupted will be discussed
Mercury and Water Quality Study. Impact of Gold Mining in Song Bung 4 Project Area, Central Vietnam
Ă
rsliste 2006The aim of this study is to elucidate any impact that the mining activity in the catchment of Song Bung River has on the water quality, sediment quality, as well as for the fish and the fish flesh quality in the mainstream river and in some tributaries in the Song Bung 4 hydropower development project area. In Song Bung mainstream enhanced concentrations of mercury were found both in the water and in the sediments in the river stretch where gold dredging activity was carried out. The concentrations were however low, much lower than problem levels both in national and internationally recognized environmental quality guidelines. This also applied for the tributaries. For arsenic and all other heavy metals normally confined with mining activity, observed concentrations were all lower than levels known to give environmental or consumption concerns. In the downstream part of the tributaries no traces of cyanide pollution were detected. The concentrations of mercury and other heavy metals in fish flesh were all low, and well below the WHO standards for consumption. The sediment dredging had only moderate impact on river water turbidity. However, the dredging made large physical disturbances of river habitats in the dredged sections of the rivers. Otherwise the water quality of Song Bung River was good and was to a low degree impacted by human activities. The mercury pollution of river sediments from the gold mining was so small that it will not create problems in the planned reservoir of Song Bung 4 Hydropower plant.Asian Development Ban
An analysis of solutions to fractional neutral differential equations with delay
This paper discusses some properties of solutions to fractional neutral delay differential equations. By combining a new weighted norm, the Banach fixed point theorem and an elegant technique for extending solutions, results on existence, uniqueness, and growth rate of global solutions under a mild Lipschitz continuous condition of the vector field are first established. Be means of the Laplace transform the solution of some delay fractional neutral differential equations are derived in terms of three-parameter MittagâLeffler functions; their stability properties are hence studied by using use RouchĂ©âs theorem to describe the position of poles of the characteristic polynomials and the final value theorem to detect the asymptotic behavior. By means of numerical simulations the theoretical findings on the asymptotic behavior are verified
