    Who the hell was that? Stories, bodies and actions in the world

    This article explores a two-way relationship between stories and the experiential actions of bodies in the world. Through an autoethnographic approach, the article presents a series of interlinked story fragments in an effort to show and evoke a feel for the ways in which stories, bodies, and actions influence and shape each other over time. It offers some reflections on the experiences the stories portray from the perspective of a social constructionist conception of narrative theory and suggest that while stories exert a powerful influence on the actions of our bodies, our bodies intrude on or ‘talk back’ to this process because bodies have an existence beyond stories

    Using a simple expert system to assist a powered wheelchair user

    A simple expert system is described that helps wheelchair users to drive their wheelchairs. The expert system takes data in from sensors and a joystick, identifies obstacles and then recommends a safe route. Wheelchair users were timed while driving around a variety of routes and using a joystick controlling their wheelchair via the simple expert system. Ultrasonic sensors are used to detect the obstacles. The simple expert system performed better than other recently published systems. In more difficult situations, wheelchair drivers did better when there was help from a sensor system. Wheelchair users completed routes with the sensors and expert system and results are compared with the same users driving without any assistance. The new systems show a significant improvement

    Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) inhibits inflammasome-mediated inflammation and has been proposed as a treatment for patients hospitalised with COVID-19. This randomised, controlled, open-label platform trial (Randomised Evaluation of COVID-19 Therapy [RECOVERY]), is assessing multiple treatments in patients hospitalised for COVID-19 (NCT04381936, ISRCTN50189673). In this assessment of DMF performed at 27 UK hospitals, adults were randomly allocated (1:1) to either usual standard of care alone or usual standard of care plus DMF. The primary outcome was clinical status on day 5 measured on a seven-point ordinal scale. Secondary outcomes were time to sustained improvement in clinical status, time to discharge, day 5 peripheral blood oxygenation, day 5 C-reactive protein, and improvement in day 10 clinical status. Between 2 March 2021 and 18 November 2021, 713 patients were enroled in the DMF evaluation, of whom 356 were randomly allocated to receive usual care plus DMF, and 357 to usual care alone. 95% of patients received corticosteroids as part of routine care. There was no evidence of a beneficial effect of DMF on clinical status at day 5 (common odds ratio of unfavourable outcome 1.12; 95% CI 0.86-1.47; p = 0.40). There was no significant effect of DMF on any secondary outcome

    Control of a semi-autonomous powered wheelchair

    A model reference controller for a powered wheelchair is described. The chair is fitted with sensor systems to assist a disabled user with steering their chair. The controller can cope with varying circumstances and situations. Non-linear terms are compensated for using an adaptive and automatic scheme. Consistent and dependable veer-controll is considered and the system was able to deal with uncertainties, for example changing surfaces, different shifting weights of users, hills, bumps, slopes and differences in tires and wheels. The controller has a quasi-linear closed-loop behaviour and that means that extra outer control loops can be appended later, for example path-following algorithms. An assistive agent was also created so that sperate wheelchairs will be able to communicate with each other in the future

    This paper discusses an efficient method for the automated detection of antropogenic changes in urban development with multispectral satellite producing sub-meter resolution imagery. The proposed method efficiency is confirmed with vector layers of detected changes in urban development obtained as a result of processing infrared and visible multidate images. The developed technique significantly reduces complexity and thus increases operational efficiency of map updating due to automation of satellite imagery processing
