Plant hormone signaling during development: insights from computational models

International audienceRecent years have seen an impressive increase in our knowledge of the topology of plant hormone signaling networks. The complexity of these topologies has motivated the development of models for several hormones to aid understanding of how signaling networks process hormonal inputs. Such work has generated essential insights into the mechanisms of hormone perception and of regulation of cellular responses such as transcription in response to hormones. In addition, modeling approaches have contributed significantly to exploring how spatio-temporal regulation of hormone signaling contributes to plant growth and patterning. New tools have also been developed to obtain quantitative information on hormone distribution during development and to test model predictions, opening the way for quantitative understanding of the developmental roles of hormones. ⺠Plant hormone signaling pathways exhibit complex topologies. ⺠Computational models predict the dynamics of hormone signaling. ⺠Modeling provides key insights on the role of hormones during growth and development. ⺠New tools allow for a quantitative understanding of hormone signaling

Floral stem cell termination involves the direct regulation of AGAMOUS by PERIANTHIA

In Arabidopsis, the population of stem cells present in young flower buds is lost after the production of a fixed number of floral organs. The precisely timed repression of the stem cell identity gene WUSCHEL (WUS) by the floral homeotic protein AGAMOUS (AG) is a key part of this process. In this study, we report on the identification of a novel input into the process of floral stem cell regulation. We use genetics and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays to demonstrate that the bZIP transcription factor PERIANTHIA (PAN) plays a role in regulating stem cell fate by directly controlling AG expression and suggest that this activity is spatially restricted to the centermost region of the AG expression domain. These results suggest that the termination of floral stem cell fate is a multiply redundant process involving loci with unrelated floral patterning functions

Suunniteltu sattuma. Sattuma ja menetelmällisyys osana luovaa työtä

Luovalla alalla, kuten kuvataiteen, kirjallisuuden, ja kuvituksen ja muotoilun kentillä on useita menetelmällisiä tekijöitä ja projekteja. Ilmiötä harvoin kuitenkaan sanallistetaan selkeästi. Menetelmällisyys on menetelmän, ennalta suunnitellun työtavan seuraamista. Tutkimukseni selvittää, miten menetelmien ja sattuman käyttö sopivat osaksi luovaa työskentelyä ja miten ne hyödyttävät tekijää. Selvitän kuinka sattuma voidaan suunnitella osaksi menetelmää. Tutkimuksen lähtökohta oli keksiä keino tehdä kuvallista kerrontaa ilman, että tarina täytyy suunnitella etukäteen. Suunnittelin itselleni menetelmän, jonka avulla tarina syntyy päivä päivältä. Toteutin menetelmällä kuvitusprojektin Wows & Lows. Piirsin havaintopiirroksia seitsemän viikon ajalta matkastani Australiaan ja paluustani Suomeen. Tein päivittäin kuvituksia paikoista, joissa vierailin, ja yhdistin kohteita käsitteleviä internetarvosteluja piirroksiini. Julkaisin kuvitussarjaa päivittäin Instagramissa koko projektin ajan. Taiteellisesta tutkimuksesta selvisi, että menetelmällisyys ja suunniteltu sattuma ovat hyödyllisiä ja monipuolisia työkaluja luovalla alalla, kuten kuvituksessa ja tarinankerronnassa. Menetelmien rajaukset ja määritetyt ohjeet helpottavat työskentelyä ja voivat lopulta muodostaa koko luovan työn konseptin. Toisin sanoen työn tekotapa, kuten ”ilman käsiä piirtäminen”, voi luoda konseptin luovalle projektille. Sattuman voi suunnitella osaksi menetelmää asettamalla kysymyksen ja sille vastauslogiikan. Sattumasta on useita hyötyjä työskentelyssä, kuten uusien, ennakoimattomien ideoiden syntyminen ja työprosessin yllätyksellisyys. Omaa menetelmääni käyttäessä huomasin sattuman luomien yllätysten pitävän minut uteliaana ja kiinnostuneena työskentelystä. Nämä ovat nähdäkseni tärkeitä motivoijia luovalla alalla. Sekä menetelmällisyyttä ja sattumaa voidaan käyttää taiteellisen työskentelyn ohella myös soveltavavan taiteen töihin, kuten kuvitukseen ja muotoiluun. Parhaimmillaan sattuma ja menetelmällisyys voivat olla työn kiinnostavin ja korvaamaton elementti, jonka takia työ halutaan tilata.There’s a great number of methodical projects and makers in the creative field, including areas such as fine arts, literature, illustration and design. Yet the methodical phenomenon is rarely well articulated. Methodical work means the use of a method, following rules and guides of action. My research inspects how the use of methods and chance suit creative work and how to benefit from them. I examine how to use chance as a planned method. The starting point for the research was to develop a way to do visual storytelling without having to plan the story in advance. I designed a method that allowed me to create a story day by day and executed illustration series Wows & Lows with it. I drew illustrations from observation during a seven week period traveling in Australia and returning to Finland. I drew places that I visited and attached them together with online reviews from the same locations. I published the series on Instagram every day during the project. Artistic research revealed that the use of methods and chance are beneficial and versatile tools for creative field such as illustration and storytelling. The limitations and defined rules make working more efficient and can create a concept for the project. In other words, defined way of working, like ”drawing without hands” can create concept for the work. Chance can be used as method by planning questions and a logic for answering. Chance has many perks in working, such as creating new unpredicted ideas and bringing surprises to the process. I noticed that while applying my own method, chance and random choices kept me curious and interested in working. These are significant sources for motivation in the creative work. Both methodical work and chance can be used in the free artistic process, as well as applied art projects as the likes of illustration and design. At its best, chance and methods can be irreplaceable highlights of the project that makes it attractive to audiences and customers
