Slow work force growth: a challenge for the Midwest?
If today's tight labor market in the Midwest can be sustained, as now seems likely, the region's policymakers and businesses will face problems associated with labor-constrained growth rather than the underemployment of the recent past. AGM-Like Paraconsistent Belief Change
Two systems of belief change based on paraconsistent logics are introduced in this article by means of AGM-like postulates. The first one, AGMp, is defined over any paraconsistent logic which extends classical logic such that the law of excluded middle holds w.r.t. the paraconsistent negation. The second one, AGMo , is specifically designed for paraconsistent logics known as Logics of Formal Inconsistency (LFIs), which have a formal consistency operator that allows to recover all the classical inferences. Besides the three usual operations over belief sets, namely expansion, contraction and revision (which is obtained from contraction by the Levi identity), the underlying paraconsistent logic allows us to define additional operations involving (non-explosive) contradictions. Thus, it is defined external revision (which is obtained from contraction by the reverse Levi identity), consolidation and semi-revision, all of them over belief sets. It is worth noting that the latter operations, introduced by S. Hansson, involve the temporary acceptance of contradictory beliefs, and so they were originally defined only for belief bases. Unlike to previous proposals in the literature, only defined for specific paraconsistent logics, the present approach can be applied to a general class of paraconsistent logics which are supraclassical, thus preserving the spirit of AGM. Descent via (3,3)-isogeny on Jacobians of genus 2 curves
We give parametrisation of curves C of genus 2 with a maximal isotropic
(ZZ/3)^2 in J[3], where J is the Jacobian variety of C, and develop the theory
required to perform descent via (3,3)-isogeny. We apply this to several
examples, where it can shown that non-reducible Jacobians have nontrivial

Globular Clusters in the Magellanic Clouds.I:BV CCD-Photometry for 11 Clusters
We present BV CCD-data for 11 intermediate-age LMC clusters; the main
conclusions are: 1. in the (V_to, V_cl,m) and (V-to, (V_to-V_cl,m)) planes the
models yield a good overall description of the data; 2. with the current
sample, it is impossible to firmly choose between "classical" and
"overshooting" models; 3. the separation in colour between the MS band and the
Red He-burning Clump is smaller than predicted by theoretical tracks; 4. the
existence of the so-called "RGB phase-transition (Renzini and Buzzoni 1986)

Observations of Subarcsecond Bright Dots in the Transition Region above Sunspots with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph
Observations with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) have
revealed numerous sub-arcsecond bright dots in the transition region above
sunspots. These bright dots are seen in the 1400\AA{} and 1330\AA{} slit-jaw
images. They are clearly present in all sunspots we investigated, mostly in the
penumbrae, but also occasionally in some umbrae and light bridges. The bright
dots in the penumbrae typically appear slightly elongated, with the two
dimensions being 300--600 km and 250--450 km, respectively. The long sides of
these dots are often nearly parallel to the bright filamentary structures in
the penumbrae but sometimes clearly deviate from the radial direction. Their
lifetimes are mostly less than one minute, although some dots last for a few
minutes or even longer. Their intensities are often a few times stronger than
the intensities of the surrounding environment in the slit-jaw images. About
half of the bright dots show apparent movement with speeds of
10--40~km~s in the radial direction. Spectra of a few bright dots
were obtained and the Si~{\sc{iv}}~1402.77\AA{} line profiles in these dots are
significantly broadened. The line intensity can be enhanced by one to two
orders of magnitude. Some relatively bright and long-lasting dots are also
observed in several passbands of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly onboard the
Solar Dynamics Observatory, and they appear to be located at the bases of
loop-like structures. Many of these bright dots are likely associated with
small-scale energy release events at the transition region footpoints of

Observations of one young and three middle-aged -ray pulsars with the Gran Telescopio Canarias
We used the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias to search for the optical
counterparts to four isolated -ray pulsars, all detected in the X-rays
by either \xmm\ or \chan\ but not yet in the optical. Three of them are
middle-aged pulsars -- PSR\, J1846+0919 (0.36 Myr), PSR\, J2055+2539 (1.2 Myr),
PSR\, J2043+2740 (1.2 Myr) -- and one, PSR\, J1907+0602, is a young pulsar
(19.5 kyr). For both PSR\, J1907+0602 and PSR\, J2055+2539 we found one object
close to the pulsar position. However, in both cases such an object cannot be a
viable candidate counterpart to the pulsar. For PSR\, J1907+0602, because it
would imply an anomalously red spectrum for the pulsar and for PSR\, J2055+2539
because the pulsar would be unrealistically bright () for the
assumed distance and interstellar extinction. For PSR\, J1846+0919, we found no
object sufficiently close to the expected position to claim a possible
association, whereas for PSR\, J2043+2740 we confirm our previous findings that
the object nearest to the pulsar position is an unrelated field star. We used
our brightness limits (), the first obtained with a
large-aperture telescope for both PSR\, J1846+0919 and PSR\, J2055+2539, to
constrain the optical emission properties of these pulsars and investigate the
presence of spectral turnovers at low energies in their multi-wavelength

Flux creep in Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O(8+x) single crystals
Dissipative effects were investigated in Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O(8+x) single crystals by critical current and magnetic relaxation measurements. Activation energies for the flux motion were determined from the temperature dependence of the critical current and from the time decay of the zero field cooled and the remanent magnetization. The effective activation energy was found to increase with temperature, in agreement with the existence of a distribution of activation energies (E sub o 20 meV at 4.2 K for H + 10 kOe applied parallel to the c-axis.)
