Proportion estimation using prior cluster purities

    Get PDF
The prior distribution of CLASSY component purities is studied, and this information incorporated into maximum likelihood crop proportion estimators. The method is tested on Transition Year spring small grain segments

An algorithm for the rapid location of an extreme of a function subject only to geometric restrictions

    Get PDF
The requirements of symmetry and convexity in the application of algorithms for the minimization or maximization of a function are discussed. It is argued that if a function of a single variable is convex and symmetric in a neighborhood of an extremum, the extremum may be approximated to the precision that increases by at least a power of two per functional evaluation. The procedure may be used to drive a complex optimization procedure in the multivariate area estimation problem encountered in remote sensing

Distance to U Pegasi by the DDE Algorithm

    Get PDF
A distance is found for the W UMa type binary U Pegasi, with a newly modified version of the Wilson-Devinney program (W-D) that makes use of the direct distance estimation (DDE) algorithm. The reported distance of d = 123.6pc is an average based on solutions for B and V data and a primary star temperature of 5800K. Standardized light curves (not differential), radial velocities, and a spectroscopic primary star temperature are input to the pro- gram. Differential corrections were performed for each light curve band along with the velocities for two primary temperatures that span 100K. Log10d is a model parameter like many others that are adjustable in W-D. The eclipsing binary distance agrees with the Hipparcos parallax distance and is more precise.Comment: 2 pages, 1 table, International Conference: Binaries - Key to Comprehension of the Universe, Brno, Czech Republic June 8-12, 200

The first occurrence of the Ponto-Caspian invader, Hemimysis anomala G.O. sars, 1907 (Mysidacea) in the UK

An invasive Ponto-Caspian mysid, Hemimysis anomala G.O. Sars, 1907, was recorded in England for the first time in 2004. Usually a deep water species, in England H. anomala has been observed in shallow waters, in which it shelters under or within anthropogenic structures during daylight. This behaviour renders traditional, net-based survey methods ineffective. Therefore, a distribution survey of the English East Midlands was conducted by searching for individuals by torchlight after dark. H. anomala was found to be widespread within the study area, occurring at 24 out of 51 sites surveyed. However, the geographical limits of its distribution were not determined. The species occurred at low densities in canals and in backwaters of the River Trent, whilst dense swarms were observed in September 2005 in a regatta lake connected to the River Trent. H. anomala has the potential to spread through England's canal network and could colonize the lower reaches and estuaries of rivers including the River Thames and River Severn. Habitat preference analysis indicated that flowing water and absence of shelter prevented population establishment, although the species' U.K. distribution suggests that it can migrate through such areas of unsuitable habitat

Face-to-Face in Writing: My First Attempt at Conducting a Text-based Online Focus Group

    Get PDF
Having completed graduate degrees in educational research and counseling, I have studied the theory of focus groups and participated in many while in a classroom setting. Interestingly, I had never moderated one until my first attempt in a text-based online environment. This paper describes my preparation for the session as well as the issues I faced while actually conducted the focus group. Readers will find that being prepared by establishing rapport with their group prior to the event, understanding the change of dynamics that distance brings to the process and handling the pressures of an expanded role as moderator, will help ensure a successful focus group session

Measure Twice and Cut Once: A Review of Clark and Creswell’s Mixed Methods Reader

    Get PDF
The Mixed Methods Reader is an edited book that presents the reader with a synthesized introduction to the philosophy, history, methodology and practice of mixed methods research. The first section presents the reader with a series of 14 foundational articles, with a second section presenting nine carefully chosen exemplar articles demonstrating best practices in the field. The editors did a remarkable job in combining theory and application with the inclusion of a framework throughout the text which includes discussion questions, visual diagrams and introductory comments for each article. This creates a synthesis and ease of use that guarantees this text to be a classic for years to come
