    An Analysis of Current Healthcare Proposals: Obama and McCain

    The healthcare system of the U.S. is broken. The next opportunity for overwhelming healthcare system reform will be when the next president takes office. This paper analyzes the 2008 presidential election candidates McCain and Obama healthcare proposals through a look at key players in the current healthcare system (government, pharmaceuticals, doctors, hospitals, and health insurance companies) and the affects of implementing such a plan. The presidential plans are presented side by side. Projected outcomes of the changes offered by Obama will be an increased role of the government and decreased power of the health insurance companies while increasing coverage. The McCain plan would have more choice for individuals with a transparent system, and less governmental bureaucracy while embracing the free market competition of the health insurance industry. There will be obstacles and/or resistance to any reform passed by the presidential elect, no matter which man had won

    Armed to Farm: Developing Training Programs For Military Veterans in Agriculture

    Farming offers a viable avenue for returning veterans to transition into society and capitalizes on skills that made them successful in the military. However, these opportunities may be missed due to a lack of targeted training programs, guidance, and information for the veteran community. Programs directed toward educating beginning farmers, along with increased awareness and demand for local food production, have provided an opportunity for individuals interested in farming. However, few programs have focused on the needs of veterans interested in agriculture. Since 2007, our team has directly supported approximately 300 veterans interested in farming through workshops, internships, research, and training opportunities and an additional 650 veterans nationally through the Farmer Veteran Coalition. As more programs develop for veterans in agricultural disciplines, we believe lessons learned from our partnership with veterans may be beneficial to those working with this population of farmers

    Cross-Section Observational Study to Assess Antimicrobial Resistance Prevalence among Bovine Respiratory Disease Bacterial Isolates from Commercial US Feedlots

    Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global public health threat that jeopardizes efficacy of antibiotics in veterinary and human medicine. Antibiotics are commonly administered to target the bacterial component of bovine respiratory disease (BRD). The objectives of this study were to obtain a better understanding of antibiotic resistance in BRD-associated bacteria (Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni), investigate the clinical significance of AMR by monitoring clinical outcomes, and determine if regional differences exist in AMR trends. Deep pharyngeal swabs were used to sample beef cattle at initial BRD diagnosis (n = 453) from US feedlots representing three geographic regions. Organisms were identified by bacterial culture and subjected to broth microdilution antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Bacterium prevalence include P. multocida (36.0%), M. haemolytica (32.7%), and H. somni (28.5%). Of the Histophilus isolates, 39.5% were resistant to at least one antimicrobial, compared to 11.7% and 8.8% Pasteurella and Mannheimia, respectively. Non-susceptibility across all organisms was 5.7 X more likely in animals that received metaphylaxis, than those that did not (p Histophilus was 8.7 X more likely than Mannheimia (p = 0.0002; OR 8.7; CI 2.8 to 27.4) and 6 X more likely than Pasteurella (p = 0.0016; OR 6.0; CI 2.0–18.0)

    A Method for the Systematic Generation of Audit Logs in a Digital Preservation Environment and Its Experimental Implementation In a Production Ready System

    In a digital preservation environment there is a need for a complete auditing of the change of the system state. A complete log ensures that the properties of the objects in the system can be verified. Modern data management systems such as the integrated Rule-Oriented Data System (iRODS) allow administrators to configure complex policies. Pre- or post-operation, these policies can trigger other state changing operations. In this paper, we describe a method that allows us - given a complete list of state changing operations - to generate a complete audit log of the system. We also describe an experimental implementation of the framework. An important advantage of our method is that not only do we build on sound theoretical foundations, but we also validate the methodology in a production ready environment which has undergone substantial quality control. The implementation of our method can be distributed as a turnkey solution that is ready to deploy, which significantly shortens the gap between theoretical development and practical applications
