This fact has become the main battlefield among professors. How to succeed in making students achieve their learning objectives so they can become excellent professionals? The main aim of this article is to answer this question. Our work shows the positive effects of using knowledge management as pedagogical tool. We present the effects of a first practical application in undergraduate students at Rovira i Virgili University

Gender-role stereotypes are barriers to women trying to access education, choosing the course they want to study (for example, nursing versus engineering)and participating in lifelong learning. And in the job market, salaries, promotionopportunities and professional development all reflect gender inequalities. Inboth cases – a professional career and access to education and lifelong learning –reality shows that the personal factors derived from caring for dependent personsand greater family responsibilities are the main causes of the inequalities betweenmen and women. This situation creates an unequal society in which the variablegender must be taken into account together with social class, educationalattainment, ethnicity, family responsibilities, and background to get an in-depthpicture of the situation of women

    Symmetrical Objecthood in Panoan Languages

This paper addresses the phenomenon of symmetrical objecthood using data from three Panoan languages: Shipibo-Konibo, Cashinawa, and Matsés. Symmetrical objecthood is defined as the possibility for both objects to display the same properties in double object constructions, such as ditransitives and applicatives. My proposal is that the structural Case assigned by a Multiple AGREE operation is responsible for the symmetry between both objects. This is put forth in the following definition: (1) X and Y are equidistant if a head H AGREEs simultaneously with both X and Y. The reasons for this analysis are based on the following: i) The symmetrical properties displayed by the objects imply the movement of the lower object over the higher one. ii) Panoan languages have an ergative-absolutive case marking system, and in double object constructions, the objects display the same case (absolutive). Following Legate 2008, absolutive is a morphological default for accusative in objects and for nominative in intransitive subjects. I assume that object licensing comes from the accusative Case assignment. iii) Multiple AGREE (Hiraiwa 2005) is a single simultaneous syntactic operation: AGREE applies to all the matched goals simultaneously at the same point in the derivation. Thus, in a symmetrical object construction, small v multiply AGREEs with the two objects and simultaneously assigns to them structural accusative Case. This analysis accounts for the following properties: free word order/extraction, reciprocalization, participant agreement (Valenzuela 2002), and others such as passivization and object agreement, which are present marginally in Matsés. For all these properties to take place, equidistance, which follows from (1), is needed to allow either object to display these properties. The paper also discusses the typological consequences of this account, arguing against a phase-based approach

Optimal control of a dengue epidemic model with vaccination

    Get PDF
We present a SIR+ASI epidemic model to describe the interaction between human and dengue fever mosquito populations. A control strategy in the form of vaccination, to decrease the number of infected individuals, is used. An optimal control approach is applied in order to find the best way to fight the disease.Comment: This is a preprint of a paper accepted for presentation at ICNAAM 2011, Halkidiki, Greece, 19-25 September 2011, and to appear in AIP Conference Proceedings, volume 138

Modeling and Optimal Control Applied to a Vector Borne Disease

A model with six mutually-exclusive compartments related to Dengue disease is presented. In this model there are three vector control tools: insecticides (larvicide and adulticide) and mechanical control. The problem is studied using an Optimal Control (OC) approach. The human data for the model is based on the Cape Verde Dengue outbreak. Some control measures are simulated and their consequences analyzed

Insecticide control in a Dengue epidemics model

    Get PDF
A model for the transmission of dengue disease is presented. It consists of eight mutually-exclusive compartments representing the human and vector dynamics. It also includes a control parameter (insecticide) in order to fight the mosquitoes. The main goal of this work is to investigate the best way to apply the control in order to effectively reduce the number of infected humans and mosquitoes. A case study, using data of the outbreak that occurred in 2009 in Cape Verde, is presented.Comment: Accepted 28/07/2010 in the special session "Numerical Optimization" of the 8th International Conference of Numerical Analysis and Applied Mathematics (ICNAAM 2010), Rhodes, Greece, 19-25 September 201
