    Possible Role of Meckel's Scan Fused with SPECT CT Imaging: Unraveling the Cause of Abdominal Pain and Obscure-Overt Gastrointestinal Bleeding

    Get PDF
    A 27-year-old male presented with recurrent abdominal pain and high volume hematochezia despite undergoing extensive testing and a right hemicolectomy 3 years prior for a linear bleeding ulceration in the ascending colon. Studies at the University of Michigan included esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy and video capsule endoscopy (VCE), revealing an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in the terminal ileum. He was hospitalized for recurrent symptoms. His presentation suggested a small bowel source of obscure-overt GI bleeding based on prior non-diagnostic colonoscopy and EGD and a bilious nasogastric lavage. Tagged red blood cell scan localized bleeding to the right lower quadrant. Colonoscopy showed fresh blood in the terminal ileum without a clear source. Angiography showed no evidence of bleeding or terminal ileal AVM. A novel Meckel's scan fused with SPECT imaging showed focal uptake in the terminal ileum. The patient underwent Meckel's diverticulectomy with sparing of adjacent bowel and has remained asymptomatic for 19 months. This case illustrates that patients with obscure-overt GI bleeding require a step-wise multi-modality diagnostic work-up. Because Meckel's scans are false-positive in 28% of adults, Meckel's scan fused with SPECT imaging may offer an approach to refine diagnostic accuracy of either scan alone, but requires further investigation. Exploratory laparotomy should be reserved as a last option and is best performed with intraoperative endoscopy

    We present measurements of the Cabibbo-suppressed decays Lambda_c^+ --> Lambda0 K+ and Lambda_c^+ --> Sigma0 K+ (both first observations), Lambda_c^+ --> Sigma+ K+ pi- (seen with large statistics for the first time), Lambda_c^+ --> p K+ K- and Lambda_c^+ --> p phi (measured with improved accuracy). Improved branching ratio measurements for the decays Lambda_c^+ --> Sigma+ K+ K- and Lambda_c^+ --> Sigma+ phi, which are attributed to W-exchange diagrams, are shown. We also present the first evidence for Lambda_c^+ --> Xi(1690)^0 K+ and set an upper limit on the non-resonant decay Lambda_c^+ --> Sigma+ K+ K-. This analysis was performed using 32.6 fb^{-1} of data collected by the Belle detector at the asymmetric e+ e- collider KEKB.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Lett. Precise Measurement of B Meson Lifetimes with Hadronic Decay Final States

    Full text link
    The lifetimes of the B0bar and B- mesons are extracted from 29.1/fb of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEK B-factory. A fit to the decay length differences of neutral and charged B meson pairs, measured in events where one of the B mesons is fully reconstructed in several hadronic modes, yields tau_B0bar = 1.554 +/- 0.030(stat) +/- 0.019(syst) ps, tau_B- = 1.695 +/- 0.026(stat) +/- 0.015(syst) ps, and tau_B-/tau_B0bar = 1.091 +/- 0.023(stat) +/- 0.014(syst).Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, and 1 table. A Measurement of Lifetime Difference in D0D^0 Meson Decays

    Full text link
    We report a measurement of the D0D^0-Dˉ0\bar{D}{}^0 mixing parameter yCPy_{CP} using 23.4 fb1^{-1} of data collected near the Υ\Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB. yCPy_{CP} is measured from the lifetime difference of D0D^0 mesons decaying into the Kπ+K^-\pi^+ state and the CP even eigenstate KK+K^-K^+. We find yCP=(0.5±1.00.8+0.7)×102y_{CP}=(-0.5\pm 1.0{}^{+0.7}_{-0.8})\times10^{-2}, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic, corresponding to a 95% confidence interval 0.030<yCP<0.020-0.030 < y_{CP} < 0.020.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

    Production of Prompt Charmonia in e+ee^+e^- Annihilation at s10.6\sqrt{s}\approx 10.6 GeV

    Full text link
    The production of prompt J/ψJ/\psi, ψ(2S)\psi(2S), χc1\chi_{c1} and χc2\chi_{c2} is studied using a 32.4fb132.4 fb^{-1} data sample collected with the Belle detector at the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) and 60 MeV below the resonance. The yield of prompt J/ψJ/\psi mesons in the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) sample is compatible with that of continuum production; we set an upper limit B(Υ(4S)J/ψX)<1.9×104{\cal B}(\Upsilon(4S) \to J/\psi X) < 1.9 \times 10^{-4} at the 95% confidence level, and find σ(e+eJ/ψX)=1.47±0.10±0.13\sigma(e^{+}e^{-} \to J/\psi X)=1.47\pm 0.10 \pm 0.13 pb. The cross-sections for prompt ψ(2S)\psi(2S) and direct J/ψJ/\psi are measured. The J/ψJ/\psi momentum spectrum, production angle distribution and polarization are studied.Comment: submitted to Phys. Measurement of the Branching Fraction for B->eta' K and Search for B->eta'pi+

    Full text link
    We report measurements for two-body charmless B decays with an eta' meson in the final state. Using 11.1X10^6 BBbar pairs collected with the Belle detector, we find BF(B^+ ->eta'K^+)=(79^+12_-11 +-9)x10^-6 and BF(B^0 -> eta'K^0)=(55^+19_-16 +-8)x10^-6, where the first and second errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. No signal is observed in the mode B^+ -> eta' pi^+, and we set a 90% confidence level upper limit of BF(B^+-> eta'pi^+) eta'K^+- decays is investigated and a limit at 90% confidence level of -0.20<Acp<0.32 is obtained.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters

    Determination of |Vcb| using the semileptonic decay \bar{B}^0 --> D^{*+}e^-\bar{\nu}

    Full text link
    We present a measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element |Vcb| using a 10.2 fb^{-1} data sample recorded at the \Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e^+e^- storage ring. By extrapolating the differential decay width of the \bar{B}^0 --> D^{*+}e^-\bar{\nu} decay to the kinematic limit at which the D^{*+} is at rest with respect to the \bar{B}^0, we extract the product of |Vcb| with the normalization of the decay form factor F(1), |Vcb |F(1)= (3.54+/-0.19+/-0.18)x10^{-2}, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. A value of |Vcb| = (3.88+/-0.21+/-0.20+/-0.19)x10^{-2} is obtained using a theoretical calculation of F(1), where the third error is due to the theoretical uncertainty in the value of F(1). The branching fraction B(\bar{B}^0 --> D^{*+}e^-\bar{\nu}) is measured to be (4.59+/-0.23+/-0.40)x10^{-2}.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, elsart.cls, submitted to PL

    A Measurement of the Branching Fraction for the Inclusive B --> X(s) gamma Decays with the Belle Detector

    Full text link
    We have measured the branching fraction of the inclusive radiative B meson decay B --> X(s) gamma to be Br(B->X(s)gamma)=(3.36 +/- 0.53(stat) +/- 0.42(sys) +0.50-0.54(th)) x 10^{-4}. The result is based on a sample of 6.07 x 10^6 BBbar events collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e^+e^- storage ring.Comment: 14 pages, 6 Postsript figures, uses elsart.cl

    An Improved Measurement of Mixing-induced CP Violation in the Neutral B Meson System

    Get PDF
    We present an improved measurement of the standard model CP violation parameter sin2phi_1 (also known as sin2beta) based on a sample of 85 times 10^6 B Bbar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. One neutral B meson is reconstructed in a J/psi K_S, psi(2S) K_S, chi_{c1} K_S, eta_c K_S, J/psi K^{*0}, or J/psi K_L CP-eigenstate decay channel and the flavor of accompanying B meson is identified from itsdecay products. From the asymmetry in the distribution of the time intervals between the two B meson decay points, we obtain sin2phi_1 = 0.719 +/- 0.074(stat) +/- 0.035(syst). We also report measurements of CP violation parameters for the related B^0 -> J/psi pi^0 decay mode and the penguin-dominated processes B^0 -> eta' K_S, phi K_S and K^+K^- K_S.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables, contributed to ICHEP200

    Observation of Cabibbo suppressed BD()KB \to D^{(*)}K^- decays at Belle

    Full text link
    Cabibbo-suppressed decays BD()KB \to D^{(*)} K^- using a 10.4 fb1^{-1} data sample accumulated at the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+ee^+ e^- storage ring. The high-momentum particle identification system of Belle is used to isolate signals for BD0KB\to D^0 K^-, D+KD^+K^-, D0KD^{*0}K^- and D+KD^{*+}K^- from the BD()πB\to D^{(*)}\pi^- decay processes which have much larger branching fractions. We report ratios of Cabibbo-suppressed to Cabibbo-favored branching fractions of: B(BD0K)/B(BD0π)=0.079±0.009±0.006{\cal B}(B^- \to D^0 K^-)/{\cal B}(B^- \to D^0\pi^-) = 0.079\pm0.009\pm0.006; B(B0ˉD+K)/B(B0ˉD+π)=0.068±0.015±0.007{\cal B}(\bar{B^0} \to D^+ K^-)/{\cal B}(\bar{B^0} \to D^+\pi^-) = 0.068\pm0.015\pm0.007; B(BD0K)/B(BD0π)=0.078±0.019±0.009{\cal B}(B^-\to D^{*0}K^-)/{\cal B}(B^-\to D^{*0}\pi^-) = 0.078 \pm 0.019 \pm 0.009; and B(Bˉ0D+K)/B(Bˉ0D+π)=0.074±0.015±0.006{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0\to D^{*+}K^-)/{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0\to D^{*+}\pi^-)= 0.074 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.006. The first error is statistical and the second is systematic. These are the first reported observations of the BD+KB\to D^+K^-, D0KD^{*0}K^- and D+KD^{*+}K^- decay processes.Comment: LaTeX, 12 pages, 2 figure
