Information disclosure of social media users: Does control over personal information, user awareness and security notices matter?
Purpose â The purpose of this paper is to bridge the gap in the existing literature by exploring the antecedents of information disclosure of social media users. In particular, the paper investigates the link between information disclosure, control over personal information, user awareness and security notices in the social context, all of which are shown to be different from existing studies in e-commerce environments. Design/methodology/approach â The authors collected and analysed data from 514 social network users. The model is estimated using ordinary least squares and robust standard errors are estimated using the Huber-White sandwich estimators. Findings â The results show that in social networking contexts, control over personal information is negatively and statistically associated with information disclosure. However, both user awareness and security notices have a positive statistical effect on information disclosure. Originality/value â Whilst research on issues of individual information privacy in e-commerce is plentiful, the area of social networking and privacy protection remains under-explored. This paper provides a useful model for analysing information disclosure behaviour on social networks. The authors discuss the practical implications of the findings for actors in social media interactions
Individual information security, user behaviour and cyber victimisation: An empirical study of social networking users
While extant literature on privacy in social networks is plentiful, issues pertaining to information security remain largely unexplored. This paper empirically examines the relationship between online victimisation and users' activity and perceptions of personal information security on social networking services (SNS). Based on a survey of active users, we explore how behavioural patterns on social networks, personal characteristics and technical efficacy of users impact the risk of facing online victimisation. Our results suggest that users with high-risk propensity are more likely to become victims of cybercrime, whereas those with high perceptions of their ability to control information shared on SNS are less likely to become victims. The study shows that there is a negative and statistically significant association between multipurpose dominant SNS (e.g. Facebook, Google +) usage and victimisation. However, activity on the SNS for knowledge exchange (e.g. LinkedIn, Blogger) has a positive and statistically significant association with online victimisation. Our results have implications for practice as they inform the social media industry that protection of individual information security on SNS cannot be left entirely to the user. The importance of user awareness in the context of social technologies plays an important role in preventing victimisation, and social networking services should provide adequate controls to protect personal information
Identifying risks related to road traffic accidents among vulnerable population in Moneragala district, Sri Lanka
Objectives: To identify individual and environmental risks related to road traffic accidents(RTA) among elderly (>60years) and disabled people (>5years living with physical, sensory or mobility impairment) in Moneragala district.Methods: Study was designed as community based participatory research. Participants were vulnerable road users (elderly and disabled). Eight focus group discussions (8-10 in each) were conducted with elderly and disabled to identify local and regional destinations that were most important to access, perceived risks related to RTA and needs/suggestions for road safety. Participants were encouraged to photograph the environment barriers and facilitators for road safety. âPhotovoiceâ is increasingly used as valuable adjunct in participatory research-a voice better heard through.Results: Frequently visited places identified by older people were the hospital, temple, village houses, community hall and bank. For disabled it varied by age, as vocational training centre, special needs school and community hall. Mostly used travel modes were public bus, three wheeled-vehicles or walking. Transportation barriers for the elderly were identified as poor road conditions, lack of disability-friendly transportation system, financial constraints and negative human factors. Disabled found accessibility to public places a major barrier. These facts were supported by photographs. Suggestions for improvement included awareness programs among people involved in transportation, cost effective transportation modes, mass media acknowledgments of rights of elderly and disabled, more effective legislation and improved road infrastructure.Conclusions: It is evident that many places the study population frequently travels are located in the city. They face many risks when travelling to these destinations. It is proposed to improve road conditions, modify modes of transportation, rigorous law enforcement and awareness programs among public to minimize the road related risks faced by disabled and elderl
Vortices in vibrated granular rods
We report the experimental observation of novel vortex patterns in vertically
vibrated granular rods. Above a critical packing fraction, moving ordered
domains of nearly vertical rods spontaneously form and coexist with horizontal
rods. The domains of vertical rods coarsen in time to form large vortices. We
investigate the conditions under which the vortices occur by varying the number
of rods, vibration amplitude and frequency. The size of the vortices increases
with the number of rods. We characterize the growth of the ordered domains by
measuring the area fraction of the ordered regions as a function of time. A
{\em void filling} model is presented to describe the nucleation and growth of
the vertical domains. We track the ends of the vertical rods and obtain the
velocity fields of the vortices. The rotation speed of the rods is observed to
depend on the vibration velocity of the container and on the packing. To
investigate the impact of the direction of driving on the observed phenomena,
we performed experiments with the container vibrated horizontally. Although
vertical domains form, vortices are not observed. We therefore argue that the
motion is generated due to the interaction of the inclination of the rods with
the bottom of a vertically vibrated container. We also perform simple
experiments with a single row of rods in an annulus. These experiments directly
demonstrate that the rod motion is generated when the rods are inclined from

INVESTIGATION OF COST EFFECTIVE SEED PROPAGATION METHODS FOR THE MEDICINAL UANA Coscinium fenestratum Colebr. (Menispennaceae)
Coscinium fenestratum colebr. (Menispermaceae) is a widely used medicinal liana in SriLanka and South Asian region. Due to heavy and indiscriminate harvesting from naturalpopulations, this species is endangered in Sri Lanka. In order to reduce the pressure onnatural populations, we attempted to develop rapid and cost effective seed germinationmethods to raise new plants for restoration and rehabilitation programs.Seeds of C. fenestratum showed all hallmarks of "recalcitrant" seed characters.Considering there initial moisture content and moisture losses. The moisture content offresh seeds was 31 ± 0.6 %. The best method to.conserve moisture content of seeds above25% during storage was by maintaining them in a humid chamber. The viability of seedsdecreased progressively with storage time and the associated moisture loss. Forty daysafter storage, the highest viability (89%) was recorded when seeds were stored in amoisture chamber while the least viability (30%) was recorded when seeds were storedunder ambient conditions. Sixty two percent of seed viability was shown when seeds werestored in polythene bags while the viability was 41% when seeds were stored in paperbags.Bioassays carried out using seeds of Brassica junceae revealed the presence ofgermination inhibitors in the endosperm and the embryo of C. fenestratum seeds.Germination percentage of B. junceae seeds (used as an indicator to check the inhibitoryaction of C. fenestratum seed) soaked with the water extracts of the endosperm and theembryo of C.fenestratuin were 17% and 25% respectively. B. junceae seeds showcJ 88%germination percentage in the control experiment where the seeds were soaked in water.In order to evaluate the best seed treatment method that enhance the germination success,fresh seeds were subjected to soaking in a range of gibberllic acid solutions (1500 ppm,2000 ppm, 2500 ppm and 3000 ppm) for 12 hours, mechanical cracking of the seed coat,soaking in tap water for 12 and 24 hours and exposure to sunlight followed by soaking intap water for 12 hours. The highest germination percentage (27%) was shown when seedswere soaked in 2000 ppm gebberllic acid for 12 hours. In all other treatments thepercentage germination was less than 10%.

Although many natural disasters have hydro-meteorological antecedents, little advantage has been taken of the availability of weather and climate data, advanced diagnostics and seasonal predictions for disaster risk management. In this study, methodologies for use of hydro-meteorological data in hazard risk assessment are presented laying the ground work for future dynamic hazard predictions.
A high-resolution assessment of natural hazards, vulnerability to hazards and of multi- hazard disaster risk has been carried out for Sri Lanka. Drought, flood, cyclone and landslide hazards, and vulnerability were identified using data from Sri Lankan government agencies. Drought and flood prone areas were mapped using rainfall data that was gridded at a resolution of 10-km. Cyclone and landslide hazardousness were mapped based on long-term historical incidence data. Indices for regional industrial development, infrastructure development and agricultural production were estimated based on proxies. An assessment of regional food insecurity from the World Food Programme was used in the analysis. Records of emergency relief were used in estimating a spatial proxy for disaster risk. A multi-hazardousness map was developed for Sri Lanka. The hazardousness estimates for drought, floods, cyclones, landslides were weighted for their associated disaster risk with proxies for economic losses to provide a risk map or a hotspots map. Our principal findings are summarized below.
Useful hazard and vulnerability analysis can be carried out with the type of data that is available in-country. The hazardousness estimates for droughts, floods, cyclones and landslides show marked spatial variability. Vulnerability shows marked spatial variability as well. Thus, the resolution of analysis needs to match the resolution of spatial variations in relief, climate and other features. The higher resolution information is needed in planning and action for disaster management.
Multi-hazard analysis brought out regions of high risk in Sri Lanka such as the Kegalle and Ratnapura Districts in the South West and Ampara, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Mullaitivu and Killinochchi districts in the North-East and the districts of Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Ampara and Matale that contain some of the sharpest hill slopes of the central mountain massifs.
There is a distinct seasonality to risks posed by drought, floods, landslides and cyclones. Whereas the Eastern slopes regions have hotspots during the boreal fall and early winter, the Western slopes regions is risk prone in the summer and the early fall. Thus attention is warranted not only on Hot-Spots but also on âHot-Seasonsâ.
Climate data was useful in estimating hazardousness in the case of droughts, floods and cyclones and for estimating flood and landslide risk. The methodologies presented here for hazard analysis of floods and droughts present an explicit link between climate and hazard. The results from this study coupled with the high-resolution seasonal climate prediction techniques developed in a related study point the way to using historical,
current and predictive climate information to inform disaster management policy, and early warning systems.
Climate, environmental and social change such as deforestation, urbanization and war affect the hazardousness and vulnerability. It is more difficult to quantify such changes rather than the baseline conditions.
Our analysis was carried out for a period since 1960 that included a period of civil war after 1983. This war affected the North-East of the island in particular. To put things in context, while natural disasters accounted for 1,483 fatalities in this period, the civil wars accounted for over 65,000. Wars and conflict poses complications for hazard and vulnerability analysis. Yet, the vulnerabilities created by the war make such efforts to reduce disaster risks all the more important.

LEAF ADAPTABILITY OF lWO NON·TIMBER FOREST SPECIES Caryota urens L. AND Elettaria carrlamomum VAR. MAJOR PLANTED IN THE Pinus caribaea ENRICHMENT BUFFER ZONE IN SINHARAJA MAB RESERVE, SRI LANKA
Caryota urens L. and Elettaria cardamomum var. major are indigenous non-timberspecies which are used as market or sustainable goods and services for human orindustrial consumption. Both species thrive well in disturbed forest areas in the southwesternpart of Sri Lanka. Being understorey species, the growth of these species areaffected by sun light which is highly variable and often limiting resource in the forest.In a Pinus enrichment study established in 1991, leaf anatomical adaptability of these twospecies after 12 years of initial establishment under the Pinus buffer zone of the SinharajaMAB .reserve was investigated. Different light levels in the study area were created bythinning Pinus trees at different densities.Lower epidermis of C. urens showed highest (7.75 %) and lowest (6.35 %) stomatalindices in 2 pine rows removed treatment (2R) and 5 pine rows removed treatment (5R)respectively. Corresponding values for E. cardamomum were 6.00 % (highest) in theclosed canopy control (CU) and 5.22 % (lowest) in 1 pine row removed treatment (lR).The highest thickness of C. urens leaf cuticle (0.2611 ±0.02), leaf blade (22.2711 ±2.l4),upper epidermis (1.7511 ±0.10), lower epidermis (1.8311 ±0.06), palisade layer (6.2511±0.87) and spongy mesophylliayer (11.7411 ±1.30) were observed in 5R treatment thatreceived relatively high light levels than other treatments.E. cardamomum leaves showed highest thickness of leaf blade (22.4311 ±O.88), lowerepidermal layer (2.1211 ±O.ll), spongy mesophyll layer (10.3211 ±O.57) in 3 pine rowsremoved treatment (3R). The highest cuticle thickness (0.2311 ±O.OI) was recordered in 3pine rows under planting treatment (3U) while lR treatment showed highest upperepidermal layer thickness of 2.2111 ±0.15. Palisade layer was highest (4.74J! ±0.55) inCU.Results revealed that C. urens shows leaf adaptability to grow under relatively high sunlight levels (5R treatment) while E. cardamomum shows most of the leaf adaptabilitycharacters to grow under moderate light levels (3R treatment).The knowledge gained by this study is useful to recommend the optimum lightrequirements in terms of leaf anatomical traits of the study species.
Androgens Regulate Prostate Cancer Cell Growth via an AMPK-PGC-1?-Mediated Metabolic Switch
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed malignancy among men in industrialized countries, accounting for the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. While we now know that the androgen receptor (AR) is important for progression to the deadly advanced stages of the disease, it is poorly understood what AR-regulated processes drive this pathology. Here, we demonstrate that AR regulates prostate cancer cell growth via the metabolic sensor 5?-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a kinase that classically regulates cellular energy homeostasis. In patients, activation of AMPK correlated with prostate cancer progression. Using a combination of radiolabeled assays and emerging metabolomic approaches, we also show that prostate cancer cells respond to androgen treatment by increasing not only rates of glycolysis, as is commonly seen in many cancers, but also glucose and fatty acid oxidation. Importantly, this effect was dependent on androgen-mediated AMPK activity. Our results further indicate that the AMPK-mediated metabolic changes increased intracellular ATP levels and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1?)-mediated mitochondrial biogenesis, affording distinct growth advantages to the prostate cancer cells. Correspondingly, we used outlier analysis to determine that PGC-1? is overexpressed in a subpopulation of clinical cancer samples. This was in contrast to what was observed in immortalized benign human prostate cells and a testosterone-induced rat model of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Taken together, our findings converge to demonstrate that androgens can co-opt the AMPK-PGC-1? signaling cascade, a known homeostatic mechanism, to increase prostate cancer cell growth. The current study points to the potential utility of developing metabolic-targeted therapies directed towards the AMPK-PGC-1? signaling axis for the treatment of prostate cancer
Our past creates our present: a brief overview of racism and colonialism in Western paleontology
As practitioners of a historical science, paleontologists and geoscientists are well versed in the idea that the ability to understand and to anticipate the future relies upon our collective knowledge of the past. Despite this understanding, the fundamental role that the history of paleontology and the geosciences plays in shaping the structure and culture of our disciplines is seldom recognized and therefore not acted upon sufficiently. Here, we present a brief review of the history of paleontology and geology in Western countries, with a particular focus on North America since the 1800s. Western paleontology and geology are intertwined with systematic practices of exclusion, oppression, and erasure that arose from their direct participation in the extraction of geological and biological resources at the expense of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). Our collective failure to acknowledge this history hinders our ability to address these issues meaningfully and systemically in present-day educational, academic, and professional settings. By discussing these issues and suggesting some ways forward, we intend to promote a deeper reflection upon our collective history and a broader conversation surrounding racism, colonialism, and exclusion within our scientific communities. Ultimately, it is necessary to listen to members of the communities most impacted by these issues to create actionable steps forward while holding ourselves accountable for the past

Contemporary ecological research supports focus on the preservation of habitats and the preservation of keystone species that are critical to the ecological character of the habitats. Conservation of endangered species works best with attention not only to the species but also to the needs of the people who may be adjacent to or bordering habitats.
Southern Sri Lanka fall into the category of globally important biodiversity hotspots. The biggest land animal, the elephant is the keystone species in Sri Lanka outside the highlands. The population of elephants in Sri Lanka is estimated to be between 3000 and 4,000; yet there has been an alarming loss of 1000 elephants during from 1990-2003. Given its island setting and rich hydro-climatic data, Sri Lanka provides a unique opportunity to study the dynamics leading to species loss.
Our work in this project was initially motivated by the practical concerns of our project partners in the Mahaweli River Basin in Sri Lanka where the human-elephant conflict was a major problem. The question that arose was: âAre the climate, water availability and river basin management practices contributing to conflict between elephants and people?â If this was indeed the case, then, could one adaptively manage the river basin, organize agricultural practices, and prioritize conflict mitigation options such as separate habitat enrichment programs? Moreover, could we propose various adaptive measures in changes if one could monitor the climate and environmental conditions and take advantage of seasonal climate predictions
