    Encouraging lifelong learning through student-centred learning approaches in a Malaysian teacher education programme

    Student-centred learning approaches employ activities that are intended to assist students to construct their own understandings and develop skills relevant to problem solving. These approaches are intended to promote development of learning skills, knowledge, attitudes and competencies for lifelong learning. In the student-centred environments, teachers relinquish being the main actor in the classroom for a facilitator‟s role. Students become active agents in the classroom where they learn how to assimilate and accommodate new information and to build new knowledge based on existing knowledge. This paper examines student-centred learning models as an alternative to traditional teacher-centred learning models. The report will present preliminary results of a case study that investigated the use of student-centred approaches at a Malaysian university teacher education programme. The qualitative approach examined teaching and learning from both the lecturers‟ and students‟ points of view. The results supported the notion of studentcentred learning in educating students toward the direction of lifelong learning development. The infusion of student-centred learning into courses in the teacher education programme provides students with opportunities to gain skills and knowledge needed to become teachers who contribute to a more lifelong learning in their classrooms. There is evidence from the study that studentcentred learning can nurture the students towards greater intrinsic motivated, self-expression and independence in their learning patterns and hence develop their lifelong learning process

    Issues and Challenges in 21st-century Learning of Special Education (Hearing Impaired) in Islamic Education

    This study was conducted to identify the challenges of Islamic education teachers in the implementation of the 21st-century learning for the teaching and learning of Islamic education special education hearing impaired. This study is a library review that uses a variety of key reference sources such as books, journals, seminar presentations, conference papers, and various sources from the internet such as websites, as well as official portals that contain information related to the study. All reference sources are analyzed to obtain the facts and detailed information on the topics discussed. The results of the discussion show that there are several challenges identified in implementing learning and facilitation based on the 21st-century learning for Islamic education for hearing-impaired students. Among them are aspects of teacher professionalism, communication skills of teachers and students, application of high-level thinking skills, and teaching facilities. To face the challenges in implementing the 21st-century learning, teachers are advised to constantly improve their knowledge and skills in various fields, especially in the field of Islamic education and special education, in addition to mastering pedagogical skills and educational technology. High commitment from teachers and strong support from the administrators is very necessary in realizing the 21st-century learning, further able to boost the excellence of special education students with hearing-impaired in fulfilling the aspirations of national education

    Pengalaman pengajaran guru novis Pendidikan Islam: implikasi terhadap reka bentuk kurikulum latihan pendidikan guru

    Program latihan pendidikan guru di institusi pengajian tinggi menyediakan asas yang baik untuk menyediakan guru pelatih untuk kompeten dalam bidang pendidikan. Walau bagaimanapun, kajian literatur mendedahkan bahawa sesetengah guru-guru novis bergelut untuk memainkan peranan dan tanggungjawab mereka dengan berkesan sebagai pendidik baru, kerana mereka menghadapi masalah dan cabaran dalam menterjemahkan pengetahuan berasaskan teori pedagogi mereka ke dalam amalan pengajaran sebenar. Selain itu, menjadi graduan baharu dan pendidik baharu, mereka diharapkan dilengkapi dengan kemahiran pembelajaran dan pemudahcaraan (PdPc) abad ke-21. Oleh itu, kajian ini memberi tumpuan kepada pengalaman pengajaran guru novis Pendidikan Islam, seperti kompetensi pedagogi, tahap profesionalisme dan bimbingan daripada rakan sekerja. Sepuluh guru novis Pendidikan Islam dari empat negeri di Malaysia dipilih dengan menggunakan pensampelan bertujuan. Sebagai sumber pengumpulan data, temu bual individu separa berstruktur menggunakan reka bentuk kualitatif telah digunakan. Hasil kajian ini telah mendapati bahawa guru novis Pendidikan Islam mempunyai isu dan cabaran dalam tempoh 5 tahun awal perkhidmatan, iaitu tekanan akibat berjauhan daripada keluarga, pengurusan tingkah laku pelajar dan tekanan bebanan kerja. Kajian ini memberi implikasi bahawa latihan pendidikan guru Pendidikan Islam perlu menambahbaik reka bentuk kurikulum bagi menghasilkan guru yang memiliki kefahaman dan kemahiran kontemporari

    This article discusses the characteristics of teacher who teaches Islamic sciences in the perspective of the Nahdlatul Wathan educational tradition, comprehensively. On the other hand, this article is one form of response to the moral degradation of teachers that have recently been rife, especially in Indonesia. This article is the result of qualitative research with a literature approach. Primary data are the books of Tuan Guru Kiai Haji Muhammad Zainuddin Abdul Madjid (Sheikh), which include Wasiat Renungan Masa (Book), Batu Ngompal (Book), the struggle song of Nahdlatul Wathan, and the recording of Sheikh's speech during his lifetime. Secondary data consists of scientific journals and relevant research results, as well as Islamic education books, Sufism, tafsīr and hadīth. Data was collected offline and online, then analyzed by using the NVivo 12 Plus software. This study shows that nine characteristics must be possessed by religious teachers who teach in the Nahdlatul Wathan madrasas/pesantrean (Islamic boarding school), namely: murshīd, sincere, obedient, mandate, behave as the teacher's morals, have a clear pedigree (silsilah/sanad), wise and polite in speaking, competent, and straight (istiqamah). This study concludes that the characteristics of the teacher mentioned in the will of the Sheikh are based on the results of contemplation (tafakkur), empirical experience (tajrībah), and extensive knowledge

    Building student character through contextual learning approach : Islamic education novice teachers’ experiences

    This study aims to examine how contextual learning approach influences the character development of Malaysian students. It reflects on how contextual learning activities applied by Islamic Education novice teachers can build student character and personality. This is a qualitative research underpinned by a constructivist learning theory as theoretical and analytical framework. A total of 10 Islamic Education novice teachers participated in this study. Data were collected through semi -structured individual interviews and classroom observations. Thematic analysis was utilized to analyse and present the research findings. The findings offer some significant insights into how contextual learning activities applied by the participants have directly and indirectly developed student character, values, personality and behaviour. The findings of this study reveal that contextual learning contributes to the building of student character. The findings of the study also provide educators, especially novice teachers, better understanding of excellent skills, such as contextual learning, more effectively. These skills are critical in order to be able to produce a competitive new generation in the face of life demands, in line with rapid development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Contextual learning when incorporated into learning will expose teachers to authentic experiences in the classroom, playing their role in developing student personality and character, together with academic performance

    Kajian ini dijalankan bertujuan untuk menganalisis pendidikan akhlak yang terdapat dalam kitab Mau’izhatul Mu’minin Min Ihya’ ‘Ulumuddin karya Jamaluddin al-Qasimi. Pendekatan yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif dengan kaedah kajian kepustakaan. Sumber utama dalam kajian ini adalah Kitab Mauizatul Mu' minin min Ihya’ ‘Ulumuddin. Data-data yang diperoleh kemudian dipilih, dieksplorasi, dipersembahkan, dan dianalisis. Hasil kajian ini menunjukkan bahawa terdapat tiga bentuk pendidikan akhlak menerusi kitab Mau’izhatul Mu’minin Min Ihya’ ‘Ulumuddin, iaitu: 1) akhlak kepada Allah SWT, 2) akhlak kepada Rasullullah SAW, dan 3) akhlak kepada sesama manusia

    Pengintegrasian Sains Kesihatan dalam Pendidikan Islam ialah pendekatan pengajaran dan pembelajaran dengan menyatukan ilmu sains kesihatan dalam mata pelajaran Pendidikan Islam. Kajian ini bertujuan meneroka pendapat pelajar dan guru Pendidikan Islam sekolah menengah serta pegawai Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia (KPM) tentang keperluan pengintegrasian Sains Kesihatan dalam Pendidikan Islam KSSM (Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Menengah) Tingkatan Satu. Kajian kes Eksploratori ini menggunakan kaedah Persampelan Bertujuan yang melibatkan 5 orang pelajar Tingkatan 2, 3 orang guru, serta seorang pegawai Bahagian Pendidikan Islam, KPM sebagai responden kajian melalui kaedah temu bual semistruktur. Kajian mendapati bahawa semua informan menerima cadangan pengintegrasian Sains Kesihatan dalam Pendidikan Islam dengan berpendapat bahawa pengintegrasian Sains Kesihatan sebagai inovasi dalam Pendidikan Islam, bersifat kesepaduan ilmu, mampu menarik minat belajar, menggalakkan berfikir aras tinggi, menghubungkaitkan ilmu Islam dengan urusan kehidupan harian, bersesuaian dengan psikologi pelajar serta sesuai dengan saranan KPM. Oleh itu, pendekatan ini diperlukan dalam pengajaran dan pembelajaran Pendidikan Islam kerana merentas kurikulum selari dengan saranan KPM yang menyepadukan ilmu Islam dengan kehidupan harian. Implikasi kajian ini ialah guru Pendidikan Islam dapat mempelbagaikan kaedah pengajaran, menggalakkan pelajar menggunakan kemahiran berfikir aras tinggi, bersesuaian dengan umur pelajar Tingkatan Satu sebagai awal remaja, dapat meningkatkan tahap minat belajar dengan mengamalkan perkara yang dipelajari dengan betul

    Parenting stress among parents of children with autism spectrum disorder: the need of stress management guidelines and policy

    This concept paper reviews the issue of parenting stress in mothers and fathers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and highlights the need for stress management guideline and policy for these parents in Malaysia. Many studies have shown that parents of children with ASD are experiencing a high level of stress. Despite this issue, there has not been any local measures to improve the well-being of the parents. In Malaysia, there is no policy or standard guideline for parents of children with ASD, hence maintaining the risk of mental health cases among them. In order to overcome this issue, this paper reviewed the Lazarus and Folkman’s (1984) problem-focused strategies used by parents of children with ASD from previous studies. The strategies mentioned in this paper had been empirically proven as reducing the parents’ stress level. This paper also recommends the strategies to be included in a local policy to help the parents manage their stress

    Development of Adolescent Well-Being Model in Malaysia: Analysis of Protective Factors in School

    Well-being is a multidimensional construct that involves a state where individuals find peace, life needs are met, have a meaningful life, have life goals, autonomy, have a satisfactory quality of life in terms of physical, psychological and social. The partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was employed to assess the research model using SmartPLS 4. This study was conducted on 587 teenagers. Among other factors measured in this study are resilience, relationship with school, parental involvement, self-efficacy, religiosity and spirituality. Among the instruments used in this study are Well-Being Scale, Spiritual Well-being, Religiosity Scale, Resiliency Belief Scale, Coppell's Self-Efficacy Scale, Parental Involvement Questionnaire and School Attachment Questionnaire. The items in this instrument are hypothesized as a priori and have non-zero loading for all dimensions in the model. The analysis of the items shows that the measurement model for all instruments is a well-fitting, multidimensional and reflective model. Data is also free of multicollinearity with  good internal validity, convergent and discriminant validity. The results also demonstrate that resilience, school attachment, religiosity, parental involvement, self-efficacy altogether positively affected teenagers’ well-being (? = 0.158, ? = 0.193, ? = 0.154, 0.280, 0.345,p <0.01) respectively, except spirituality. The model explained 68 percent of the variance in well-being (R2=. 675) with AVE 0.70 and composite reliability 0.97. Analysis of the items resulted in a well-fitting model (SRMR<0.08, p<0.01). Therefore, well-being of young generation is significant to bring sustainable development to the mainstream and as protective factors against some of the challenges that may arise so that they have ability for self-regulation in emotions and become resilience.
