The authors studied the effect of four different polishing techniques on amalgam restorations made of two conventional and three high-copper alloys. Polishing was performed 168 hours after condensation. The use of multilaminated burs in the superficial finishing of the amalgam samples led to rugosity similar to that of the nonpolished samples. Regarding the utilized alloys, DFL exhibited the highest values of superficial rugosity, meanwhile GS 80 showed the lowest values. Trituration was performed as the manufacturer indicated and amalgam was condensed in a steel matrix fabricated especially for this research. The matrix had a cavity with 4.0 mm in diameter and 2.0 mm in depht. Five minutes after condensation the amalgam surfaces were submitted to sculpture with a steel blade and then to burnishing. After 25 minutes, the amalgam samples were removed with the aid of the matrix screw. Then, 168 hours after condensation, the samples were polished and submitted to rugosimetric tests

Estradiol induces transcriptional and posttranscriptional modifications in versican expression in the mouse uterus

We have previously shown the differential expression of versican in the mouse uterus under ovarian hormone influence. We also demonstrated there is not a direct correlation between mRNA levels and protein expression, suggesting posttranscriptional events, such as alteration in mRNA stability. This posttranscriptional effect may result in the elongation and stabilization of transcripts poly(A) tail. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze whether estradiol (E2) regulates versican mRNA stability and expression in a dose-related and time-dependent manner. For this purpose female mice were ovariectomized and treated with a single injection of 0.1 or 10 μg E2. To block transcription a group of females received a single injection of alpha-amanitin before hormone administration. Uterine tissues were collected 30 min, 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 h after treatments and processed for quantitative real time PCR (qPCR), RACE-PAT Assay and immunohistochemistry. qPCR showed that versican mRNA levels are higher than control from 3 to 24 h after E2 administration, whereas after transcription inhibition versican mRNA unexpectedly increases within 3 h, which can be explained when transcriptional blockers alter the degradation rate of the transcript, resulting in the superinduction of this mRNA. Accordingly, analysis of versican transcript poly(A) tail evidenced a longer product 3 h after treatment, but not after 12 h. Versican immunoreaction becomes conspicuous in the superficial stroma only 3 h after E2 injection, whereas the whole stroma is immunoreactive from 6 h onward. These results demonstrate that E2 modulates versican at the transcriptional and posttranscriptional levels in a time-dependent manner.Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) - Brazil (09/51788-1)CAPES (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior)CNPq (Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico

Chemical composition and larvicidal activity of Rollinia leptopetala (Annonaceae)

The aim of present study was to describe the chemical composition of the essential oils from the leaf and stem of Rollinia leptopetala R. E. Fries (Annonaceae) and to evaluate the larvicidal activities of these essential oils, of the methanol extract from roots of this plant and of the oxoaporphine alkaloid, liriodenine (1) against the third-instar of Aedes aegypti larvae. The methanol extract from the roots showed larvicidal activity with LC50 64.6 ± 1.5 ppm. Higher activity was observed for the isolated alkaloid liriodenine (1), LC50 3.6 ± 0.4 ppm. The essential oils from the leaves and stems, also exhibited larvicidal activity with LC50 104.7 ± 0.2 and 34.7 ± 0.3 ppm, respectively. These results suggest R. leptopetala as a source of natural larvicidal compounds. This is the first report about the chemical composition and larvicidal activity of the leaf and stem essential oils of R. leptopetala

Translation and Validation of a Brazilian Portuguese Version of the Body Appreciation Scale-2 in Brazilian Adults

We examined the psychometric properties of a Brazilian Portuguese translation of the Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2; Tylka & Wood-Barcalow, 2015). A sample of 990 Brazilian adults (560 women, 430 men; Mage = 31.10, SD = 8.94) completed the BAS-2 and measures of life satisfaction, self-esteem, actual-ideal weight discrepancy (women only), breast size dissatisfaction (women only), drive for muscularity (men only), and disordered eating behaviours. Exploratory factor analyses indicated that BAS-2 scores reduced to a single dimension with all 10 items in women and men. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the fit of this one-dimensional factor structure following freeing of error covariances between two pairs of items. BAS-2 scores achieved full scalar invariance across sex, and men had significantly higher BAS-2 scores than women. Internal consistency coefficients were adequate and test-retest reliability was supported up to three weeks in a subsample of 221 participants (140 women, 81 men). Evidence of construct validity was demonstrated through positive associations with indices of psychological well-being and negative associations with indices of negative body image and disordered eating behaviours. Availability of a Brazilian Portuguese translation of the BAS-2 should help to promote greater understanding of positive body image in the Brazilian context
