    Get PDF
In this paper we describe the CLEC corpus, an ongoing project set up at the University of Cádiz with the purpose of building up a large corpus of English as a 2L classified according to CEFR proficiency levels and formed to train statistical models for automatic proficiency assessment. The goal of this corpus is twofold: on the one hand it will be used as a data resource for the development of automatic text classification systems and, on the other, it has been used as a means of teaching innovation techniques

This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License.-- et al.Fragile X syndrome is the most common inherited form of intellectual disability. Here we report on a study based on a collaborative registry, involving 12 Spanish centres, of molecular diagnostic tests in 1105 fragile X families comprising 5062 individuals, of whom, 1655 carried a full mutation or were mosaic, three cases had deletions, 1840 had a premutation, and 102 had intermediate alleles. Two patients with the full mutation also had Klinefelter syndrome. We have used this registry to assess the risk of expansion from parents to children. From mothers with premutation, the overall rate of allele expansion to full mutation is 52.5%, and we found that this rate is higher for male than female offspring (63.6% versus 45.6%; P < 0.001). Furthermore, in mothers with intermediate alleles (45-54 repeats), there were 10 cases of expansion to a premutation allele, and for the smallest premutation alleles (55-59 repeats), there was a 6.4% risk of expansion to a full mutation, with 56 repeats being the smallest allele that expanded to a full mutation allele in a single meiosis. Hence, in our series the risk for alleles of < 59 repeats is somewhat higher than in other published series. These findings are important for genetic counselling. © 2014 María-Isabel Tejada et al.Thanks are due to the agreements between GIRMOGEN and the Real Patronato sobre Discapacidad of the Spain’s Ministry for Health, Social Services and Equality (Spain) to carry out this study.Peer Reviewe

Au/CeO2 metallic monolith catalysts: Influence of the metallic substrate

    Get PDF
Ceria-based gold catalysts were successfully deposited on ferritic stainless steel (Fecralloy) and aluminium monoliths. The prepared monolithic and reference powder catalysts were characterized by means of S BET, X-ray diffraction, glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis techniques and tested in the CO oxidation reaction. Characterization results put in evidence the diffusion of cations from the catalytic layer on the surface of the monoliths to the metallic oxide scale and inversely, from the oxide scale to the catalysts, thus altering the catalytic formulation and affecting the CO oxidation properties of the catalytic device. The extension and nature of the modifications produced depend on the nature of the catalysts and the metallic substrate, as well as the reaction conditions applied. These facts must be considered when gold catalysts are supported on metallic-structured devices.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad ENE2012- 37431-C03-03Junta de Andalucía TEP-819

Extended U+F social network protocol: interoperability, reusability, data protection and indirect relationships in web based social networks

    Get PDF
An interconnected world is what current technologies look for, being Web Based Social Networks (WBSNs) a promising development in this regard. Four desirable WBSN features are identified, namely, interoperability, reusability, protection against WBSNs providers and indirect relationships. A protocol, called U+F, addressed interoperability and reusability of identity data, resources and access control policies between different WBSNs. In order to address the remaining couple of features, that is, achieving the protection of data against WBSNs providers and indirect relationships management across different WBSNs, this paper presents eU+F, an extension of U+F. A prototype is developed to verify the feasibility of implementing the proposed protocol in a real environment, as well as to compare its workload regarding three well-known WBSNs, Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn

Analysis of PALB2 gene in BRCA1/BRCA2 negative Spanish hereditary breast/ovarian cancer families with pancreatic cancer cases

This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License.-- et al.[Background]: The PALB2 gene, also known as FANCN, forms a bond and co-localizes with BRCA2 in DNA repair. Germline mutations in PALB2 have been identified in approximately 1% of familial breast cancer and 3–4% of familial pancreatic cancer. The goal of this study was to determine the prevalence of PALB2 mutations in a population of BRCA1/BRCA2 negative breast cancer patients selected from either a personal or family history of pancreatic cancer. [Methods]: 132 non-BRCA1/BRCA2 breast/ovarian cancer families with at least one pancreatic cancer case were included in the study. PALB2 mutational analysis was performed by direct sequencing of all coding exons and intron/exon boundaries, as well as multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification. [Results]: Two PALB2 truncating mutations, the c.1653T>A (p.Tyr551Stop) previously reported, and c.3362del (p.Gly1121ValfsX3) which is a novel frameshift mutation, were identified. Moreover, several PALB2 variants were detected; some of them were predicted as pathological by bioinformatic analysis. Considering truncating mutations, the prevalence rate of our population of BRCA1/2-negative breast cancer patients with pancreatic cancer is 1.5%. [Conclusions]: The prevalence rate of PALB2 mutations in non-BRCA1/BRCA2 breast/ovarian cancer families, selected from either a personal or family pancreatic cancer history, is similar to that previously described for unselected breast/ovarian cancer families. Future research directed towards identifying other gene(s) involved in the development of breast/pancreatic cancer families is required. This research was supported by grants from the Xunta de Galicia (10PXIB 9101297PR) and FMM Foundation given to AV. Levulinic to succinic acid transformation over Ru based catalysts

    Get PDF
In this work ruthenium based catalysts are tested as catalytic systems for the selective oxidation of levulinic to succinic acid. Very different in nature supports have been chosen in order to elucidate the effect of their textural and acidic properties on the final catalytic activity. The influence of Ru particle size is also discussed and proposed as one of the key factors. Medium range ruthenium particles supported on relatively acid supports are the best performing systems in terms of succinic acid yield, while the most active catalysts in terms of conversion result in important carbon loss due to reagent/products full oxidation.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICIN). Suicidal Ideation Profiles in Patients with Fibromyalgia Using Transdiagnostic Psychological and Fibromyalgia-Associated Variables

    Get PDF
Several studies have emphasized the heterogeneity of fibromyalgia patients. Furthermore, fibromyalgia patients are considered a high-risk suicide group. The ideation-to-action framework proposes a set of transdiagnostic psychological factors involved in the development of suicidal ideation. The present study aims to explore the existence of different subgroups according to their vulnerability to suicidal ideation through these transdiagnostic psychological variables and a set of variables typically associated with fibromyalgia. In this cross-sectional study, 151 fibromyalgia patients were assessed through the Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory-II, Plutchik Suicide Risk Scale, Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire, Defeat Scale, Entrapment Scale, Psychache Scale, and Beck Hopelessness Scale. A K-means cluster analysis identified two clusters, one (45.70%) according to a low vulnerability, and a second (54.30%) with a high vulnerability to suicidal ideation. These clusters showed statistically significant differences in suicidal ideation and suicide risk. However, no differences were observed in most socio-demographic variables. In conclusion, fibromyalgia patients who present a clinical condition characterized by a moderate-high degree of physical dysfunction, overall disease impact and intensity of fibromyalgia-associated symptoms, along with a high degree of perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, defeat, entrapment, psychological pain and hopelessness, form a homogeneous group at high risk for suicidal ideation
