Growth patterns and scaling laws governing AIDS epidemic in Brazilian cities
Brazil holds approximately 1/3 of population living infected with AIDS
(acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) in Central and South Americas, and it was
also the first developing country to implement a large-scale control and
intervention program against AIDS epidemic. In this scenario, we investigate
the temporal evolution and current status of the AIDS epidemic in Brazil.
Specifically, we analyze records of annual absolute frequency of cases for more
than 5000 cities for the first 33 years of the infection in Brazil. We found
that (i) the annual absolute frequencies exhibit a logistic-type growth with an
exponential regime in the first few years of the AIDS spreading; (ii) the
actual reproduction number decaying as a power law; (iii) the distribution of
the annual absolute frequencies among cities decays with a power law behavior;
(iv) the annual absolute frequencies and the number of inhabitants have an
allometric relationship; (v) the temporal evolution of the annual absolute
frequencies have different profile depending on the average annual absolute
frequencies in the cities. These findings yield a general quantitative
description of the AIDS infection dynamics in Brazil since the beginning. They
also provide clues about the effectiveness of treatment and control programs
against the infection, that has had a different impact depending on the number
of inhabitants of cities. In this framework, our results give insights into the
overall dynamics of AIDS epidemic, which may contribute to select empirically
accurate models.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
Spikes in Cosmic Crystallography
If the universe is multiply connected and small the sky shows multiple images
of cosmic objects, correlated by the covering group of the 3-manifold used to
model it. These correlations were originally thought to manifest as spikes in
pair separation histograms (PSH) built from suitable catalogues. Using
probability theory we derive an expression for the expected pair separation
histogram (EPSH) in a rather general topological-geometrical-observational
setting. As a major consequence we show that the spikes of topological origin
in PSH's are due to translations, whereas other isometries manifest as tiny
deformations of the PSH corresponding to the simply connected case. This result
holds for all Robertson-Walker spacetimes and gives rise to two basic
corollaries: (i) that PSH's of Euclidean manifolds that have the same
translations in their covering groups exhibit identical spike spectra of
topological origin, making clear that even if the universe is flat the
topological spikes alone are not sufficient for determining its topology; and
(ii) that PSH's of hyperbolic 3-manifolds exhibit no spikes of topological
origin. These corollaries ensure that cosmic crystallography, as originally
formulated, is not a conclusive method for unveiling the shape of the universe.
We also present a method that reduces the statistical fluctuations in PSH's
built from simulated catalogues.Comment: 25 pages, LaTeX2e. References updated. To appear in Int. J. Mod.

Assessing temporary speed restrictions and associated unavailability costs in railway infrastructure
This paper analyses the occurrence of temporary speed restrictions in railway infrastructure associated with railway track geometry degradation. A negative binomial regression model is put forward to estimate the expected number of temporary speed restrictions, controlling for the main quality indicators of railway track geometry degradation and for the maintenance and renewal actions/decisions. The prediction of temporary speed restrictions provides a quantitative way to support the assessment of unavailability costs to railway users. A case study on the Lisbon–Oporto Portuguese line is explored, comparing three statistical models: the Poisson, the ‘over-dispersed’ Poisson and the proposed negative binomial regression. Main findings suggest that the main quality indicators for railway track geometry degradation are statistically significant variables, apart from the maintenance and renewal actions. Finally, a discussion on the impacts of the unavailability costs associated with temporary speed restrictions is also provided in a regulated railway context.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
On Exact and Approximate Solutions for Hard Problems: An Alternative Look
We discuss in an informal, general audience style the da Costa-Doria conjecture about the independence of the P = NP hypothesis and try to briefly assess its impact on practical situations in economics. The paper concludes with a discussion of the Coppe-Cosenza procedure, which is an approximate, partly heuristic algorithm for allocation problems.P vs. NP , allocation problem, assignment problem, traveling salesman, exact solution for NP problems, approximate solutions for NP problems, undecidability, incompleteness
A multicriteria evaluation system for large real estate investments
As an economic engine of contemporary societies, the real estate market needs to be carefully analyzed in terms of both urban management and private or public investment. Information on this market’s behavior can facilitate the identification of turning points in societies’ economic history. Analysts should focus not only on conditioning variables and other important determinants of relevance to investment evaluations but also on the impacts of each variable or factor. Measuring these effects is a key activity in decision-making processes. Given real estate’s growing importance to sustainable economic growth, this study concentrates on creating a multicriteria model for evaluating large real estate investments. A constructivist, process-oriented approach was applied in group work sessions held with a panel of experts with experience in dealing with this issue. These specialists structured the problem of evaluating large real estate investments using value-focused thinking (VFT) and cognitive mapping. The best-worst method (BWM) was then applied to calculate trade-offs among decision criteria and calibrate the evaluation system. The results were presented to and validated by a representative of Instituto da Habitação e da Reabilitação Urbana (Institute for Housing and Urban Rehabilitation), who identified the advantages and limitations of the proposed model, and suggested possible improvements.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Relationships between fat depots and body condition score or tail fatness in Rasa Aragonesa breed
The relationships between body fat depots and body condition score (BCS) were determined in 52 adult
Rasa Aragonesa ewes aged 10 (s.d. 2) years and ranging in BCS from 1-5 to 4•5. BCS of each ewe was
assessed by three people. the repeatability within individual being 90"/0 and between individuals 80%.
The ewes were weighed before slaughter. After slaughter the omental mesenteric kidney and pelvic fat
were separated and weighed. The fat of the left side of the carcass was separated into subcutaneous and
intermuscular depots. The relationship between live weight and BCS was semilogarithmic and those
between fat depots and BCS were logarithmic. Regression analysis was also used to describe the
relationships between the various fat depots and BCS or live weight Of the variation in total fat weight.
proportionately 0•90 was accounted for by variations in BCS while 0•84 was accounted for by variations
in live weight. For individual fat depots proportionately 0•86 to 0•90 of the variation was accounted for
by variation in BCS and 0•69 to 0-79 by variation in live weight. BCS was a better predictor than live
weight of the weight of both total body fat and the individual fat depots.
A curvilinear regression between BCS and live weight showed that the increases in live weight for a
unit change in BCS was 7, 10, 12 and 16 kg for each one point increase ill BCS from 1 to 5
respectively.
The tail fat depot (tail fatness score) •Was assessed in the same ewes by score on a three-point scale.
Of the variation in the weight of individual fat depots proportionately 0•79 to 0•86 was accounted for
by variation in tail fatness score. Thus the tail fatness score could be used as an additional method of
assessing body condition in the Aragonesa breed
