Mathematics Professional Development Workshop for Middle School Teachers: Concept Versus Memorization
This article includes professional development topics for middle school mathematics and science teachers from two week-long Urban Teacher Institutes. These Institutes were held at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College (JSRCC) and its partner institution, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), during the summers of 2007 and 2008, and were supported by a grant obtained by Dr. Harriet Morrison (JSRCC). Co-author Dr. Dewey Taylor directed the 2007 workshop, and both authors served as faculty leaders in both workshops. The workshops focused on teaching in an urban environment and community mapping (understanding the details of a certain locale to make the teacher more knowledgeable about the environments of both the students and the schools). The community mapping aspect of the workshops was led by Dr. Shirley Key of the University of Memphis. They featured content teaching and applications led by VCU faculty in mathematics, physics, forensics, engineering, mathematics education, and science education. This article focuses on the mathematics professional development strand in the workshop which featured conceptual learning with graphing calculator support as an alternative to the memorization of formulas

Navigation system and method
In a global positioning system (GPS), such as the NAVSTAR/GPS system, wherein the position coordinates of user terminals are obtained by processing multiple signals transmitted by a constellation of orbiting satellites, an acquisition-aiding signal generated by an earth-based control station is relayed to user terminals via a geostationary satellite to simplify user equipment. The aiding signal is FSK modulated on a reference channel slightly offset from the standard GPS channel. The aiding signal identifies satellites in view having best geometry and includes Doppler prediction data as well as GPS satellite coordinates and identification data associated with user terminals within an area being served by the control station and relay satellite. The aiding signal significantly reduces user equipment by simplifying spread spectrum signal demodulation and reducing data processing functions previously carried out at the user terminals
Spectral properties of the tandem Jackson network, seen as a quasi-birth-and-death process
Quasi-birth-and-death (QBD) processes with infinite ``phase spaces'' can
exhibit unusual and interesting behavior. One of the simplest examples of such
a process is the two-node tandem Jackson network, with the ``phase'' giving the
state of the first queue and the ``level'' giving the state of the second
queue. In this paper, we undertake an extensive analysis of the properties of
this QBD. In particular, we investigate the spectral properties of Neuts's
R-matrix and show that the decay rate of the stationary distribution of the
``level'' process is not always equal to the convergence norm of R. In fact, we
show that we can obtain any decay rate from a certain range by controlling only
the transition structure at level zero, which is independent of R. We also
consider the sequence of tandem queues that is constructed by restricting the
waiting room of the first queue to some finite capacity, and then allowing this
capacity to increase to infinity. We show that the decay rates for the finite
truncations converge to a value, which is not necessarily the decay rate in the
infinite waiting room case. Finally, we show that the probability that the
process hits level n before level 0 given that it starts in level 1 decays at a
rate which is not necessarily the same as the decay rate for the stationary

Benchmark full configuration-interaction calculations on H2O, F- and F
Full configuration-interaction calculations are reported, and compared to other methods, for H2O at its equilibrium geometry and at two geometries with the H-O bonds stretched. Since the percentage of the self-consistent field (SCF) reference in the full configuration-interaction (FCI) wave function decreases greatly with the bond elongation, the accuracy of techniques based on a single reference do not compare well with the FCI results. However, the results from a complete active space SCF/multireference configuration-interaction (CASSCF/MRCI) treatment are in good agreement with the FCI. Correlation effects in F compared to Ne are far more similar than for F- compared to Ne, despite F- and Ne being isoelectronic. Since the importance of higher than double excitations is more important for F- than F, a very high percentage of the correlation must be obtained to accurately compute the electron affinity. In a CASSCF/MRCI treatment the higher than quadruple excitations contribute 0.02 eV to the electron affinity (EA), even for modest basis sets

Symmetry and equivalence restrictions in electronic structure calculations
A simple method for obtaining MCSCF orbitals and CI natural orbitals adapted to degenerate point groups, with full symmetry and equivalnece restrictions, is described. Among several advantages accruing from this method are the ability to perform atomic SCF calculations on states for which the SCF energy expression cannot be written in terms of Coulomb and exchange integrals over real orbitals, and the generation of symmetry-adapted atomic natural orbitals for use in a recently proposed method for basis set contraction
