    Restorative Practices: A Continuum of Supports

    We will showcase resources to support educators in implementing restorative practices. We will examine the core features of restorative practices (the social discipline window, affective statement, affective questions, circles, impromptu conversations, and conferences). Participants will have the opportunity to experience a restorative circle. The facilitators will provide free resources and strategies to participants to begin using affective statements and questions and incorporate circles. Facilitators will share best practices from their district and show the improvements in discipline outcome data. Participants will also have the opportunity to see how restorative practices align with other initiatives already in place and can be used a preventive framework for undesirable behaviors.     Vortex avalanches in the non-centrosymmetric superconductor Li2Pt3B

    We investigated the vortex dynamics in the non-centrosymmetric superconductor Li_2Pt_3B in the temperature range 0.1 K - 2.8 K. Two different logarithmic creep regimes in the decay of the remanent magnetization from the Bean critical state have been observed. In the first regime, the creep rate is extraordinarily small, indicating the existence of a new, very effective pinning mechanism. At a certain time a vortex avalanche occurs that increases the logarithmic creep rate by a factor of about 5 to 10 depending on the temperature. This may indicate that certain barriers against flux motion are present and they can be opened under increased pressure exerted by the vortices. A possible mechanism based on the barrier effect of twin boundaries is briefly discussed

    Evolution of the electronic excitation spectrum with strongly diminishing hole-density in superconducting Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+\delta}

    A complete knowledge of its excitation spectrum could greatly benefit efforts to understand the unusual form of superconductivity occurring in the lightly hole-doped copper-oxides. Here we use tunnelling spectroscopy to measure the T\to 0 spectrum of electronic excitations N(E) over a wide range of hole-density p in superconducting Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+/delta}. We introduce a parameterization for N(E) based upon an anisotropic energy-gap /Delta (\vec k)=/Delta_{1}(Cos(k_{x})-Cos(k_{y}))/2 plus an effective scattering rate which varies linearly with energy /Gamma_{2}(E) . We demonstrate that this form of N(E) allows successful fitting of differential tunnelling conductance spectra throughout much of the Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+/delta} phase diagram. The resulting average /Delta_{1} values rise with falling p along the familiar trajectory of excitations to the 'pseudogap' energy, while the key scattering rate /Gamma_{2}^{*}=/Gamma_{2}(E=/Delta_{1}) increases from below ~1meV to a value approaching 25meV as the system is underdoped from p~16% to p<10%. Thus, a single, particle-hole symmetric, anisotropic energy-gap, in combination with a strongly energy and doping dependent effective scattering rate, can describe the spectra without recourse to another ordered state. Nevertheless we also observe two distinct and diverging energy scales in the system: the energy-gap maximum /Delta_{1} and a lower energy scale /Delta_{0} separating the spatially homogeneous and heterogeneous electronic structures.Comment: High resolution version available at: http://people.ccmr.cornell.edu/~jcdavis/files/Alldredge-condmat08010087-highres.pd

    A general description of a phosphorescent bay on the northern shore of Jamaica, West Indies, is presented. The brilliant bioluminescence in this embayment is due to the large armored dinoflagellate, Pyrodinium bahamense. It was found in cell densities as high as 200,000 cells/liter.     IntroductionChemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment colloquially referred to as chemobrain is a poorly understood phenomenon affecting a highly variable proportion of patients with breast cancer. Here we investigate the association between anxiety and despair-like behaviors in mice treated with cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and fluorouracil (CMF) along with host histological, proteomic, gene expression, and gut microbial responses.MethodsForced swim and sociability tests were used to evaluate depression and despair-like behaviors. The tandem mass tag (TMT) proteomics approach was used to assess changes in the neural protein network of the amygdala and hippocampus. The composition of gut microbiota was assessed through 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Finally, quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to evaluate changes in intestinal gap junction markers.Results and discussionWe observed that CMF induced social and despair-like behavior in mice 96 hours following treatment. Proteomic analysis identified changes in various proteins related to progressive neurological disease, working memory deficit, primary anxiety disorder, and gene expression revealing increases in NMDA and AMPA receptors in both the hippocampus and the amygdala because of CMF treatment. These changes finally, we observed immediate changes in the microbial population after chemotherapy treatment, with a notable abundance of Muribaculaceae and Romboutsia which may contribute to changes seen in the gut

    Building Bridges with Boats: Preserving Community History through Intra- and Inter-Institutional Collaboration

    This chapter discusses Launching through the Surf: The Dory Fleet of Pacific City, a project which documents the historical and contemporary role of dory fishers in the life of the coastal village of Pacific City, Oregon, U.S. Linfield Collegeā€™s Department of Theatre and Communication Arts, its Jereld R. Nicholson Library, the Pacific City Arts Association, the Pacific City Dorymen\u27s Association, and the Linfield Center for the Northwest joined forces to engage in a collaborative college and community venture to preserve this important facet of Oregonā€™s history. Using ethnography as a theoretical grounding and oral history as a method, the project utilized artifacts from the dory fleet to augment interview data, and faculty/student teams created a searchable digital archive available via open access. The chapter draws on the authorsā€™ experiences to identify a philosophy of strategic collaboration. Topics include project development and management, assessment, and the role of serendipity. In an era of value-added services where libraries need to continue to prove their worth, partnering with internal and external entities to create content is one way for academic libraries to remain relevant to agencies that do not have direct connections to higher education. This project not only developed a positive ā€œtown and gownā€ relationship with a regional community, it also benefited partner organizations as they sought to fulfill their missions. The project also serves as a potential model for intra- and inter-agency collaboration for all types of libraries

    Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory - Preliminary Design Report

    The DUSEL Project has produced the Preliminary Design of the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) at the rehabilitated former Homestake mine in South Dakota. The Facility design calls for, on the surface, two new buildings - one a visitor and education center, the other an experiment assembly hall - and multiple repurposed existing buildings. To support underground research activities, the design includes two laboratory modules and additional spaces at a level 4,850 feet underground for physics, biology, engineering, and Earth science experiments. On the same level, the design includes a Department of Energy-shepherded Large Cavity supporting the Long Baseline Neutrino Experiment. At the 7,400-feet level, the design incorporates one laboratory module and additional spaces for physics and Earth science efforts. With input from some 25 science and engineering collaborations, the Project has designed critical experimental space and infrastructure needs, including space for a suite of multidisciplinary experiments in a laboratory whose projected life span is at least 30 years. From these experiments, a critical suite of experiments is outlined, whose construction will be funded along with the facility. The Facility design permits expansion and evolution, as may be driven by future science requirements, and enables participation by other agencies. The design leverages South Dakota's substantial investment in facility infrastructure, risk retirement, and operation of its Sanford Laboratory at Homestake. The Project is planning education and outreach programs, and has initiated efforts to establish regional partnerships with underserved populations - regional American Indian and rural populations
