Simultaneous Spin-Charge Relaxation in Double Quantum Dots
We investigate phonon-induced spin and charge relaxation mediated by
spin-orbit and hyperfine interactions for a single electron confined within a
double quantum dot. A simple toy model incorporating both direct decay to the
ground state of the double dot and indirect decay via an intermediate excited
state yields an electron spin relaxation rate that varies non-monotonically
with the detuning between the dots. We confirm this model with experiments
performed on a GaAs double dot, demonstrating that the relaxation rate exhibits
the expected detuning dependence and can be electrically tuned over several
orders of magnitude. Our analysis suggests that spin-orbit mediated relaxation
via phonons serves as the dominant mechanism through which the double-dot
electron spin-flip rate varies with detuning.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Supplemental Material (2 pages, 2 figures

Living with multiple myeloma: A focus group study of unmet needs and preferences for survivorship care
Purpose: To describe the unmet informational, psychological, emotional, social, practical, and physical needs and preferences for posttreatment survivorship care of individuals living with multiple myeloma to inform the development of relevant, personcentered, survivorship services.
Methods: An exploratory, descriptive study using 2 focus groups with 14 participants, 6 to 49 months postdiagnosis. Results: Thematic analysis revealed 7 key themes: information needs, experience with health-care professionals, coping with side effects, communicating with family and friends, dealing with emotions, support needs, and living with the chronicity of myeloma. Participants described key characteristics of survivorship care relevant to their needs and indicated they would like a more whole of person approach to follow-up when the main treatment phases had completed.
Conclusion: Participants in this study described unmet needs across a breadth of domains that varied over time. The development of flexible, person-centered approaches to comprehensive survivorship care is needed to address the considerable quality-of-life issues experienced by people living with multiple myeloma. Nurse-led care may offer 1 viable model to deliver enhanced patient experience—providing the vital “link” that people described as missing from their survivorship care
BRST Hamiltonian for Bulk-Quantized Gauge Theory
By treating the bulk-quantized Yang-Mills theory as a constrained system we
obtain a consistent gauge-fixed BRST hamiltonian in the minimal sector. This
provides an independent derivation of the 5-d lagrangian bulk action. The
ground state is independent of the (anti)ghosts and is interpreted as the
solution of the Fokker-Planck equation, thus establishing a direct connection
to the Fokker-Planck hamiltonian. The vacuum state correlators are shown to be
in agreement with correlators in lagrangian 5-d formulation. It is verified
that the complete propagators remain parabolic in one-loop dimensional
regularization.Comment: 23 pages, AMS-LaTeX, 1 feynmf diagram, added 2 refs email addres

Quasilocalized gravity without asymptotic flatness
We present a toy model of a generic five-dimensional warped geometry in which
the 4D graviton is not fully localized on the brane. Studying the tensor sector
of metric perturbation around this background, we find that its contribution to
the effective gravitational potential is of 4D type (1/r) at the intermediate
scales and that at the large scales it becomes 1/r^{1+alpha}, 0<alpha=< 1 being
a function of the parameters of the model (alpha=1 corresponds to the
asymptotically flat geometry). Large-distance behavior of the potential is
therefore not necessarily five-dimensional. Our analysis applies also to the
case of quasilocalized massless particles other than graviton.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure; to be published in Phys. Rev.
Evolution of the Dark Matter Distribution with 3-D Weak Lensing
We present a direct detection of the growth of large-scale structure, using
weak gravitational lensing and photometric redshift data from the COMBO-17
survey. We use deep R-band imaging of two 0.25 square degree fields, affording
shear estimates for over 52000 galaxies; we combine these with photometric
redshift estimates from our 17 band survey, in order to obtain a 3-D shear
field. We find theoretical models for evolving matter power spectra and
correlation functions, and fit the corresponding shear correlation functions to
the data as a function of redshift. We detect the evolution of the power at the
7.7 sigma level given minimal priors, and measure the rate of evolution for
0<z<1. We also fit correlation functions to our 3-D data as a function of
cosmological parameters sigma_8 and Omega_Lambda. We find joint constraints on
Omega_Lambda and sigma_8, demonstrating an improvement in accuracy by a factor
of 2 over that available from 2D weak lensing for the same area.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures; submitted to MNRA
Correlated two-particle scattering on finite cavities
The correlated two-particle problem is solved analytically in the presence of
a finite cavity. The method is demonstrated here in terms of exactly solvable
models for both the cavity as well as the two-particle correlation where the
two-particle potential is chosen in separable form. The two-particle phase
shift is calculated and compared to the single-particle one. The two-particle
bound state behavior is discussed and the influence of the cavity on the
binding properties is calculated.Comment: Derivation shortened and corrected, 14 pages 10 figure
VLBI Polarimetry of 177 Sources from the Caltech-Jodrell Bank Flat-spectrum Survey
We present VLBA observations and a statistical analysis of 5 GHz VLBI
polarimetry data from 177 sources in the Caltech-Jodrell Bank flat-spectrum
(CJF) survey. The CJF survey, a complete, flux-density-limited sample of 293
extragalactic radio sources, gives us the unique opportunity to compare a broad
range of source properties for quasars, galaxies and BL Lacertae objects. We
focus primarily on jet properties, specifically the correlation between the jet
axis angle and the polarization angle in the core and jet. A strong correlation
is found for the electric vector polarization angle in the cores of quasars to
be perpendicular to the jet axis. Contrary to previous claims, no correlation
is found between the jet polarization angle and the jet axis in either quasars
or BL Lac objects. With this large, homogeneous sample we are also able to
investigate cosmological issues and AGN evolution.Comment: Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal: 37 pages, 14 figure
