    Constraining Theories of SiO Maser Polarization: Analysis of a pipi/2 EVPA Change

    The full theory of polarized SiO maser emission from the near-circumstellar environment of Asymptotic Giant Branch stars has been the subject of debate, with theories ranging from classical Zeeman origins to predominantly non-Zeeman anisotropic excitation or propagation effects. Features with an internal electric vector position angle (EVPA) rotation of ∼π/2\sim \pi /2 offer unique constraints on theoretical models. In this work, results are presented for one such feature that persisted across five epochs of SiO ν=1,J=1−0\nu=1, J=1-0 VLBA observations of TX Cam. We examine the fit to the predicted dependence of linear polarization and EVPA on angle (θ\theta) between the line of sight and the magnetic field against theoretical models. We also present results on the dependence of mcm_c on θ\theta and their theoretical implications. Finally, we discuss potential causes of the observed differences, and continuing work

    Matter in transition

    We explore a novel type of transition in certain 6D and 4D quantum field theories, in which the matter content of the theory changes while the gauge group and other parts of the spectrum remain invariant. Such transitions can occur, for example, for SU(6) and SU(7) gauge groups, where matter fields in a three-index antisymmetric representation and the fundamental representation are exchanged in the transition for matter in the two-index antisymmetric representation. These matter transitions are realized by passing through superconformal theories at the transition point. We explore these transitions in dual F-theory and heterotic descriptions, where a number of novel features arise. For example, in the heterotic description the relevant 6D SU(7) theories are described by bundles on K3 surfaces where the geometry of the K3 is constrained in addition to the bundle structure. On the F-theory side, non-standard representations such as the three-index antisymmetric representation of SU(N) require Weierstrass models that cannot be realized from the standard SU(N) Tate form. We also briefly describe some other situations, with groups such as Sp(3), SO(12), and SU(3), where analogous matter transitions can occur between different representations. For SU(3), in particular, we find a matter transition between adjoint matter and matter in the symmetric representation, giving an explicit Weierstrass model for the F-theory description of the symmetric representation that complements another recent analogous construction.Comment: 107 pages, 3 figures, 32 tables. I assisted the Chatham County Safety Net Planning Council by using information systems to help with dental assistance in the county both short and long term. This is a very important issue in the county and it has caused many issues among people without dental insurance. I helped by creating a website platform for the Chatham County Safety Net, and used data analysis to help make the event more streamlined

    A Straining in the Text: Women Writers and the Deconstruction of the Sentimental Plot 1845-1900

    In the nineteenth century, most sentimental marriage-plot novels by women include a female bildungsroman that terminates with the heroines containment in marriage. The tension between this bildungsroman and the expectations of the marriage-plot novel are examined as a deconstructive gap through which women interrogated the cultural and social realities of their lives under cover of the socially accepted form of the marriage-plot novel. A discussion of the historical realities of women's lives is presented and an embedded interrogation of this reality in the novels is exposed. This examination is Anglo-American in nature including studies of Charlotte Bronte, Elizabeth Gaskell, Louisa May Alcott and Elizabeth Stuart Phelps. At the heart of this deconstructive gap is the experimentation with female relationships, relationships that progressively emerge as the focus of these novels and the decentering force of the marriage-plot. Specifically, female mentoring relationships, which educate the heroine in the ways of the marriage market and, by implication, in the ways of survival in patriarchy, are the source of experimentation. In addition, the psycho-social underpinnings of female development are explored to facilitate an understanding of the nature of these relationships. All of the authors considered in this study have a self-consciousness about their participation in the sentimental tradition and an irony about the expectations the form contains and the reality that their characters experience. Bronte's Shirley, Gaskell's Wives and Daughters, Alcott's Little Women and Work: A story of Experience, and Phelps's Silent Partner demonstrate the power of female relationships to facilitate private survival in a world marked by separate spheres and limited opportunity. A recurring theme in all these novels is the idleness imposed on middle-class women and the heroine's desire for meaningful work. In a chronological progression, the resolution in marriage becomes increasingly less tolerable and/or satisfying, a progression that culminates in the deconstruction of the marriage closure in alternative communities of women (post-marriage) or single alternatives

    Geothermal resource assessment of the Gueydan salt dome and the adjacent southeast Gueydan field, Vermilion Parish, Louisiana

    The fluids heated by the high thermal conductivity and vertical geometry of salt domes in South Louisiana have the potential to be an economic source of geothermal energy. The Gueydan dome is a piercement salt diapir in Southwest Louisiana lying along the Vermilion and Acadia Parish border. Isotherms indicate a thermal anomaly at the crest of the dome with formation temperatures of 62 ËšC recorded at 1346 m, which is too cold for a geothermal prospect. The shallowest salt encountered is at a depth of 1475 m, and the surrounding strata are Cenozoic sand and clay deposits. Previous geothermal assessments in the vicinity conducted in 1979 by Gruy Federal selected prospect locations off the east and south flanks of the dome for the Frio Formation. This study assesses the shallower, brine saturated Camerina A sand of the Frio Formation to the southwest of the dome where existing uneconomic oil and gas wells are shut in. Kehle corrected formation temperatures for the Camerina A range between 129 to 153 ËšC. The regional geothermal gradient for South Louisiana is 23 ËšC/km. Using shallow temperatures as a constraint, numerical modeling of the thermal regime and a temperature depth slice interpretation from well data indicates that the salt does not aid in increasing the thermal gradient for the Camerina A but instead regionally depresses isotherms because heat transport through the salt dome is more efficient. A hingepoint in the geothermal gradient at the top of overpressure reflects an increase in geothermal gradients through the Camerina A. However, limited well control to the north and west requires conservative reservoir volumetric estimates. Therefore, the Camerina A of Southeast Gueydan Field cannot be deemed a potential prospect based on proposed minimum bulk reservoir volumetric requirements of 1 km3 (Griggs, 2004). Numerical modeling of temperature fields around salt at deeper burial depths suggests that minimum temperatures required for binary power production can be reached through the heat focusing effect of salt domes when the rest of the dome is within the 100 ËšC to 120 ËšC range of the regional temperature regime
