    Firm Performance, Worker Commitment and Loyalty

    Using matched employer-employee level data drawn from the UK Workplace and Employee Relations Survey, we explore the influence of worker commitment and loyalty on firm level labour productivity and financial performance. Our empirical findings suggest that worker commitment and loyalty enhance both labour productivity and financial performance at the firm level thereby highlighting a hitherto neglected conduit for improved firm performance. Using employee level data, we also explore the determinants of worker commitment and loyalty in order to ascertain how such attachments to the firm may be engendered. In general, our employee level analysis suggests that it is firm level characteristics (such as appraisal schemes, supervision, suspensions and redundancies) that influence attachments to the firm. Such findings suggest that firms may be able to exert some influence over the loyalty and commitment of its workforce, which, in turn, may affect firm performance

    Body Fat is Associated with Decreased Endocrine and Cognitive Resilience to Acute Emotional Stress

    *Objective:* Cortisol is elevated both in individuals with increased emotional stress as well as with higher percentages of body fat. Cortisol is also known to affect cognitive performance, particularly spatial processing, selective attention, and working memory. We hypothesized that increased body fat might therefore be associated with decreased performance on a spatial processing task, in response to an acute real-world stressor. 

*Design:* We tested two separate samples of subjects undergoing their first (tandem) skydive. In the first sample (N=78), subjects were tested for salivary cortisol and state-anxiety (Spielberger State Anxiety Scale) during the plane's fifteen-minute ascent to altitude in immediate anticipation of the jump. In a second sample (N=20), subjects were tested for salivary cortisol, as well as cardiac variables (heart rate, autonomic regulation via heart rate variability) and performance on a cognitive task of spatial processing, selective attention, and working memory. 

*Results:* In response to the skydive, individuals with greater body fat percentages showed significantly increased reactivity for both cortisol (on both samples) and cognition, including decreased accuracy of our task of spatial processing, selective attention, and working memory. These cognitive effects were restricted to the stress response and were not found under baseline conditions. There were no body fat interactions with cardiac changes in response to the stressor, suggesting that the cognitive effects were specifically hormone-mediated rather than secondary to general activation of the autonomic nervous system. 

*Conclusions:* Our results indicate that, under real-world stress, increased body fat may be associated with endocrine stress-vulnerability, with consequences for deleterious cognitive performance

    Signifying the evolution and confidence of our Nation\u27s space effort has been the relatively recent involvement of both large, well established commercial firms as well as the newly created, almost unknown companies in space research of new materials and processes. The dynamic mechanisms of our capitalistic society are now at work in the continuing adventure of space. The challenge to NASA is to provide the most appropriate business environment to these pioneering firms, at a cost which can be financially acceptable to both NASA and each company. This paper describes the existing facilities and procedures which are being used by these companies as stepping stones to space and to full commercial production in space. It introduces some of the potential programs and procedures which, if adopted and implemented, could lead quickly to even greater participation of commercial firms in space

    Fractal Dimensions in Perceptual Color Space: A Comparison Study Using Jackson Pollock's Art

    The fractal dimensions of color-specific paint patterns in various Jackson Pollock paintings are calculated using a filtering process which models perceptual response to color differences (\Lab color space). The advantage of the \Lab space filtering method over traditional RGB spaces is that the former is a perceptually-uniform (metric) space, leading to a more consistent definition of ``perceptually different'' colors. It is determined that the RGB filtering method underestimates the perceived fractal dimension of lighter colored patterns but not of darker ones, if the same selection criteria is applied to each. Implications of the findings to Fechner's 'Principle of the Aesthetic Middle' and Berlyne's work on perception of complexity are discussed.Comment: 21 pp LaTeX; two postscript figure
