    Pandemic Politics: Tiebout Sorting and Work-From-Home

    Where to live and when to move are two fundamental questions people have to answer in their lives. People weigh their preferences for what jurisdictions offer and choose the best mix of wages, amenities, and, importantly, public policies and politics. However, employment constraints and mobility costs mean that people have to make concessions about where to live. Importantly, people may live in a place orthogonal to their personal politics in order to have a good job and high-quality amenities. Using a novel data set from the COVID-19 pandemic, this paper answers the question of what people do when they no longer have to entertain the costs of moving. Using a simple theoretical model, this paper arrives at the conclusion that when origins and destinations differ by amenities, people will sort along political lines under a workfrom- home regime. The theory also predicts that when origins and destinations differ by productivity, there will not be political sorting under work-from-home. Work-fromhome allowed people to retain their jobs and move cheaply, and the pandemic was a time of heightened political salience. These factors, combined with the nature of a pandemic, allowed for a natural experiment framework. This, in turn, gives rise to novel empirical results, the most important of which, is that there has been an increase in political sorting in the US, and has only increased since the COVID-19 pandemic started. Further results show that in the case of an amenity differential, the theory is corroborated by the data, and there are no significant results for a productivity differential.

    A Southern Hemisphere radar meteor orbit survey

    A meteor radar system has been operated on a routine basis near Christchurch, New Zealand, to determine the orbits of Earth-impacting interplanetary dust and meteoroids. The system sensitivity is +13 visual magnitude, corresponding to approximately 100 micron sized meteoroids. With an orbital precision of 2 degrees in angular elements and 10 percent in orbital energy (1/a), the operation yields an average of 1500 orbits daily with a total to date in excess of 10(exp 5). The use of pc's and automated data reduction permit the large orbital data sets we collect to be routinely reduced. Some illustrative examples are presented of the signal formats/processing and the results of data reduction, giving the individual orbital elements and hence the overall distributions. Current studies include the distribution of dust in the inner solar system; the influx of meteoroids associated with near-Earth asteroids; and the orbital structure existing in comet-produced streams

    A lunar far-side very low frequency array

    Papers were presented to consider very low frequency (VLF) radio astronomical observations from the moon. In part 1, the environment in which a lunar VLF radio array would function is described. Part 2 is a review of previous and proposed low-frequency observatories. The science that could be conducted with a lunar VLF array is described in part 3. The design of a lunar VLF array and site selection criteria are considered, respectively, in parts 4 and 5. Part 6 is a proposal for precursor lunar VLF observations. Finally, part 7 is a summary and statement of conclusions, with suggestions for future science and engineering studies. The workshop concluded with a general consensus on the scientific goals and preliminary design for a lunar VLF array
