    Predicted field-induced hexatic structure in an ionomer membrane

    Coarse-grained molecular-dynamics simulations were used to study the morphological changes induced in a Nafion®^{\tiny \textregistered}-like ionomer by the imposition of a strong electric field. We observe the formation of novel structures aligned along the direction of the applied field. The polar head groups of the ionomer side chains aggregate into clusters, which then form rod-like formations which assemble into a hexatic array aligned with the direction of the field. Occasionally these lines of sulfonates and protons form a helical structure. Upon removal of the electric field, the hexatic array of rod-like structures persists, and has a lower calculated free energy than the original isotropic morphology.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figure

    When welfare reforms were enacted in 1996, a higher than average percentage of residents in the agricultural heartland of California, the San Joaquin Valley, received cash assistance. Average annual unemployment rates during the 1990s ranged from 12% to 20%, and 15% to 20% of residents in major farming counties received cash benefits.     Impact of Flower Harvesting on the Salt Marsh Plant \u3cem\u3eLimonium carolinianum\u3c/em\u3e

    Because of the potentially detrimental effects of seed production on adult survivorship and growth, moderate flower harvesting may have little negative impact on population growth of long-lived perennial plants such as Limonium carolinianum (Walter) Britton. We examined this by collecting data on survivorship, growth, and fecundity of an unharvested population over a period of 5 years and conducted a controlled experiment to examine the effect of harvesting on adult survivorship and growth over a 3-year period. Data were summarized in the form of a stage structured matrix population model with a stochastic element that incorporated year-to-year variation in transition probabilities. Contrary to our original hypothesis, we found that preventing seed set through removal of flowers did not increase adult survivorship or growth. By determining the harvest level that reduced population growth rate to 1.0, we estimated the maximum sustainable harvest level to be 16%, a value that is approximately half that of reported harvest levels on accessible marshes in the study area. In spite of this, the reported harvest levels are unlikely to drive local populations to extinction in the foreseeable future. Providing the adult population size is \u3e100 and harvest levels are \u3c90%, time to local extinction will exceed 100 years. This is a function of the very high survivorship of adults in this species and the fact that harvesting has no negative impact on adult survivorship or growth. However, because of the long preadult phase in this species (8–9 years) and the fact that fecundity of young adults is low, recovery from overharvesting is extremely slow. Adult population size can be reduced to 25% of its original value in 7 years at high harvest levels, but it will take 34 years on average to recover once harvesting is terminated

    Oxygen Loss from Simulated Galaxies and the Metal Flow Main Sequence : Predicting the Dependence on Mass and Environment

All rights reserved.We predict the mass fraction of oxygen lost from galaxies in a cosmological simulation as a function of stellar mass and environment at the present day. The distribution with stellar mass is bimodal, separating star-forming and quenched galaxies. The metallicity of gas and stars is self-consistently calculated using a chemical evolution model that includes supernovae type II and Ia, hypernovae, and asymptotic giant branch stars. The mass of oxygen lost from each galaxy is calculated by comparing the existing oxygen in gas and stars in the galaxy to the oxygen that should have been produced by the present-day population of stars. More massive galaxies are able to retain a greater fraction of their metals (100\sim 100 per cent) than low-mass galaxies (4070\sim 40 - 70 per cent). As in the star formation main sequence, star-forming galaxies follow a tight relationship also in terms of oxygen mass lost -- a metal flow main sequence, ZFMS -- whereas massive quenched galaxies tend to have lost a greater fraction of oxygen (up to 20 per cent), due to AGN-driven winds. The amount of oxygen lost by satellite galaxies depends on the details of their interaction history, and those in richer groups tend to have lost a greater fraction of their oxygen. Observational estimates of metal retention in galaxies will provide a strong constraint on models of galaxy evolution.Peer reviewe

    Short‐term time step convergence in a climate model

    This paper evaluates the numerical convergence of very short (1 h) simulations carried out with a spectral‐element (SE) configuration of the Community Atmosphere Model version 5 (CAM5). While the horizontal grid spacing is fixed at approximately 110 km, the process‐coupling time step is varied between 1800 and 1 s to reveal the convergence rate with respect to the temporal resolution. Special attention is paid to the behavior of the parameterized subgrid‐scale physics. First, a dynamical core test with reduced dynamics time steps is presented. The results demonstrate that the experimental setup is able to correctly assess the convergence rate of the discrete solutions to the adiabatic equations of atmospheric motion. Second, results from full‐physics CAM5 simulations with reduced physics and dynamics time steps are discussed. It is shown that the convergence rate is 0.4—considerably slower than the expected rate of 1.0. Sensitivity experiments indicate that, among the various subgrid‐scale physical parameterizations, the stratiform cloud schemes are associated with the largest time‐stepping errors, and are the primary cause of slow time step convergence. While the details of our findings are model specific, the general test procedure is applicable to any atmospheric general circulation model. The need for more accurate numerical treatments of physical parameterizations, especially the representation of stratiform clouds, is likely common in many models.     Fracture Tests to Study the Behaviour of Simulated Sub-Surface Flaws in a Reactor Pressure Vessel Steel - a Continuation of the NESC-IV project

    The NESC-IV project (2000 - 2005) addressed the transferability of fracture toughness data from laboratory specimens to applications that assess the integrity of reactor pressure vessels. This project included a series of uniaxial bend tests on large beams with a simulated shallow, sub-surface flaw. The results of these experiments pointed towards a significant constraint-loss effect in the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature range of the used steel, but in view of the inherent scatter in fracture toughness of low alloy steels in the given regime, further testing was recommended. Therefore the scope of present project was to perform a set of six additional tests with nominally identical test piece geometry, material and loading arrangements, so as to obtain a statistically more relevant data set. The Institute for Energy contracted the Nuclear Research Institute in Rez to perform these experiments. Following the successful execution of the tests, a preliminary fracture mechanics analysis was made to compare estimates of the stress intensity values at failure with the material's Master Curve. The results confirmed the constraint-loss effect, which had been observed in the previous NESC-IV test series. Moreover it was found that some aspects needed further attention, such as detailed finite element modelling of the experimental arrangements and accurate characterization of the test material's fracture toughness.     A 2.5-GHz asymmetric multilevel outphasing power amplifier in 65-nm CMOS

    We present a high-efficiency transmitter based on asymmetric multilevel outphasing (AMO). AMO transmitters improve their efficiency over LINC (linear amplification using nonlinear components) transmitters by switching the output envelopes of the power amplifiers among a discrete set of levels. This minimizes the occurrence of large outphasing angles, reducing the energy lost in the power combiner. We demonstrate this concept with a 2.5-GHz, 20-dBm peak output power transmitter using 2-level AMO designed in a 65-nm CMOS process. To the authors' knowledge, this IC is the first integrated implementation of the AMO concept. At peak output power, the measured power-added efficiency is 27.8%. For a 16-QAM signal with 6.1dB peak-to-average power ratio, the AMO prototype improves the average efficiency from 4.7% to 10.0% compared to the standard LINC system

    Treatment recommendations for psoriatic arthritis

    Objective: To develop comprehensive recommendations for the treatment of the various clinical manifestations of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) based on evidence obtained from a systematic review of the literature and from consensus opinion. Methods: Formal literature reviews of treatment for the most significant discrete clinical manifestations of PsA (skin and nails, peripheral arthritis, axial disease, dactylitis and enthesitis) were performed and published by members of the Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA). Treatment recommendations were drafted for each of the clinical manifestations by rheumatologists, dermatologists and PsA patients based on the literature reviews and consensus opinion. The level of agreement for the individual treatment recommendations among GRAPPA members was assessed with an online questionnaire. Results: Treatment recommendations were developed for peripheral arthritis, axial disease, psoriasis, nail disease, dactylitis and enthesitis in the setting of PsA. In rotal, 19 recommendations were drafted, and over 80% agreement was obtained on 16 of them. In addition, a grid that factors disease severity into each of the different disease manifestations was developed to help the clinician with treatment decisions for the individual patient from an evidenced-based perspective. Conclusions: Treatment recommendations for the cardinal physical manifestations of PsA were developed based on a literature review and consensus between rheumatologists and dermatologists. In addition, a grid was established to assist in therapeutic reasoning and decision making for individual patients. It is anticipated that periodic updates will take place using this framework as new data become available
