An Examination of Conflicting Findings Between Job Satisfaction and Absenteeism: A Meta Analysis
This study, which applied meta-analytic procedures, found a significant negative relationship between certain facets of job satisfaction and absenteeism. Findings suggest that sampling errors, scale inadequacies, and the use of different measures of job satisfaction and absence are the reasons for inconsistencies in previous empirical research that examined the relationship between job satisfaction and absenteeism

Design and Development of Oligonucleotide Microarrays and their Application in Diagnostic and Prognostic Estimation of Human Gliomas
DNA microarrays represent an ultra-high throughput gene expression assay employed to study the transcriptomic profiles of biological tissues. These devices are increasingly being used to study many aspects of gene regulation, and there is growing interest in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries for developing such devices in efforts toward rational product/drug design. The DNA microarray also provides a unique and objective means for diagnosis and prognosis of human diseases based on patterns of gene expression. This is especially important in cancer research and the thrust toward personalized medicine. This dissertation details the design and development of oligonucleotide microarrays and the design and execution of a gene expression study conducted using human glioma specimines. Chapter 2 details the design and development a ~10,000 gene human oligonucleotide microarray. This device consisted of a 21,168 features, each composed of a particular human gene-probe and was applied to the challenge of diagnostic and prognostic estimation for human gliomas (chapter 3). Gliomas are the most frequent and deadly neoplasms of the human brain characterized by a high misdiagnosis rate and low survival. The study in chapter 3 demonstrated that the specified design and development parameters were appropriate for conducting gene expression analysis and that this platform can be used successfully to predict malignancy grade and survival for glioma patients

Impact histories of Vesta and Vestoids inferred from howardites, eucrites and diogenites
The parent body of the howardites, eucrites and diogenites (HEDs) is thought to be asteroid (4) Vesta [1]. However, several eucrites have now been recognized, like NWA 011 and Ibitira, with major element compositions and mineralogy like normal eucrites but with different oxygen isotope compositions and minor element concentrations suggesting they are not from the same body [2, 3]. The discoveries of abnormal eucrites and V-type asteroids that are probably not from Vesta [see 4] raise the question whether the HEDs with normal oxygen isotopes are coming from Vesta [3]. To address this issue and understand more about the evolution of Vesta in preparation for the arrival of the Dawn spacecraft, we integrate fresh insights from Ar-Ar dating and oxygen isotope analyses of HEDs, radiometric dating of differentiated meteorites, as well as dynamical and astronomical studies of Vesta, the Vesta asteroid family (i.e., the Vestoids), and other V-type asteroids
The effect of salvage therapy on survival in a longitudinal study with treatment by indication
We consider using observational data to estimate the effect of a treatment on disease recurrence, when the decision to initiate treatment is based on longitudinal factors associated with the risk of recurrence. The effect of salvage androgen deprivation therapy (SADT) on the risk of recurrence of prostate cancer is inadequately described by the existing literature. Furthermore, standard Cox regression yields biased estimates of the effect of SADT, since it is necessary to adjust for prostate-specific antigen (PSA), which is a time-dependent confounder and an intermediate variable. In this paper, we describe and compare two methods which appropriately adjust for PSA in estimating the effect of SADT. The first method is a two-stage method which jointly estimates the effect of SADT and the hazard of recurrence in the absence of treatment by SADT. In the first stage, PSA is predicted in the absence of SADT, and in the second stage, a time-dependent Cox model is used to estimate the benefit of SADT, adjusting for PSA. The second method, called sequential stratification, reorganizes the data to resemble a sequence of experiments in which treatment is conditionally randomized given the time-dependent covariates. Strata are formed, each consisting of a patient undergoing SADT and a set of appropriately matched controls, and analysis proceeds via stratified Cox regression. Both methods are applied to data from patients initially treated with radiation therapy for prostate cancer and give similar SADT effect estimates. Reorganize your blogs: Supporting blog re-visitation with natural language processing and visualization
Temporally-connected personal blogs contain voluminous textual content, presenting challenges in re-visiting and reflecting on experiences. Other data repositories have benefited from natural language processing (NLP) and interactive visualizations (VIS) to support exploration, but little is known about how these techniques could be used with blogs to present experiences and support multimodal interaction with blogs, particularly for authors. This paper presents the effect of reorganization—reorganizing the large blog set with NLP and presenting abstract topics with VIS—to support novel re-visitation experiences to blogs. The BlogCloud tool, a blog re-visitation tool that reorganizes blog paragraphs around user-searched keywords, implements reorganization and similarity-based content grouping. Through a public use session with bloggers who wrote about extended hikes, we observed the effect of NLP-based reorganization in delivering novel re-visitation experiences. Findings suggest that the re-presented topics provide new reflection materials and re-visitation paths, enabling interaction with symbolic items in memory
Pattern of Reaction Diffusion Front in Laminar Flows
Autocatalytic reaction between reacted and unreacted species may propagate as
solitary waves, namely at a constant front velocity and with a stationary
concentration profile, resulting from a balance between molecular diffusion and
chemical reaction. The effect of advective flow on the autocatalytic reaction
between iodate and arsenous acid in cylindrical tubes and Hele-Shaw cells is
analyzed experimentally and numerically using lattice BGK simulations. We do
observe the existence of solitary waves with concentration profiles exhibiting

J16021+3326: New Multi-Frequency Observations of a Complex Source
We present multifrequency Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of
J16021+3326. These observations, along with variability data obtained from the
Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) candidate gamma-ray blazar monitoring
program, clearly indicate this source is a blazar. The peculiar characteristic
of this blazar, which daunted previous classification attempts, is that we
appear to be observing down a precessing jet, the mean orientation of which is
