The making of business news in Africa: a case study of Cameroon Tribune newspaper

    Get PDF
Since the emergence of business journalism as a genre within the broad spectrum of news reporting, most of the scholarly works into its development have focused on growth in the western (that is developed) world. This indicates that very limited research has been done in the field of business journalism in the developing economies. Thus there exist gaps in understanding the practice of business journalism in Africa and part of this is rooted in how the practice is defined. This study aims to shed light on the practice of business journalism in this African context. It explores the onset and development of business journalism and its evolution in Africa. The main focus in this case study was to understand the definition of business news in the specific context of the Cameroon Tribune. Individual in-depth interviews were used as the main (primary) data collection method along with observation and cursory reading as complementary (secondary) methods. This study is influenced by the sociology of news production which foregrounds theoretical frames such as news construction and gatekeeping. Findings from this study reveal that business news at the Cameroon Tribune is elitist, essentially defined around personality and, is in the most part, development news. Additional findings indicate that the absence of any editorial guidelines leaves most reporters secondguessing how to please management with socialised values mostly acquired through peer learning. In conclusion, this study advances the necessity for the Africanisation of business news. This would entail reporting financial, economic, consumer, and corporate affairs, from a vocabulary and composition context that unveils much exchange taking place in the lives of many Africans

Correlation between ultrasound estimated fetal weight in term pregnancy and actual birth weight amongst pregnant women in Jos

Background: High rate of perinatal mortality is still a major cause for concern in developing countries such as Nigeria. A large portion of this problem is related to birth-weight which remains the single most important parameter that determines neonatal survival. A simple and accurate method of estimating intrauterine fetalweight that can be easily applied to all pregnancies is thus an important means of reducing perinatal mortality and morbidity. Objective: To determine the correlation between ultrasound estimated fetal weight in term pregnancy and actual birth weight amongst pregnant women in Jos, North-Central NigeriaMethods: This research was a prospective cross-sectional hospital based study correlating sonographic estimated fetal weight at term with actual birth weight in Jos, North-Central Nigeria. Ultrasound estimated fetal weight was calculated using a combination of the biparietal diameter (BPD), abdominal circumference (AC), and femoral length (FL) usingHadlock formula, inbuilt in ALOKA SSD-4000 ultrasound machine fitted with 3.5MHz curvilinear transducer. Results: A total of 400 women were recruited for the study. The mean maternal age was 29.35 years, and the mean gestational age at delivery was 38 weeks and 6 days. The mean actual birth weight was 3209.31 ± 497.52g while the mean ultrasound estimated fetal weight was 3177.85 ± 533.01g.There was an overall strong correlation between ultrasound estimated fetal weight and actual birth weight (r=0.835) and the difference was not statistically significant (p>0.001.). Also, 75% of the estimates were within 10% of the actual birth weight. Conclusion: Ultrasound estimated fetal weight correlated strongly with actual birth weight especially for babies with normal birth weight. However, for babies at the extremes of birth weight, ultrasound estimated fetal weight would need to be correlated with physical examination (including clinical estimation) to avoid unnecessary obstetric intervention. Keywords: Correlation, ultrasound, fetal weight, actual weight, term pregnanc

The aim of this research is to determine the application of the Price Earning Ratio and Price to Book Value as a basis for making stock investment decisions in coal sub-sector companies listed on the IDX for the 2020-2022 period. The population in this study are coal sub-sector companies listed on the IDX in 2020-2022. Sampling used a purposive sampling technique and eight company samples were obtained. Data collection techniques use documentation. Data analysis techniques use PER and PBV. The results of this research show that based on intrinsic value calculations using PER and compared with closing price, company shares that are undervalued include ADRO, BSSR, BYAN, GEMS, ITMG, MBAP, MYOH, and PTBA where the investment decision that can be taken is to buy shares or holding shares if already owned. Based on the intrinsic value calculation using PBV and compared with the closing price, company shares that are undervalued include ADRO, BYAN, GEMS, ITMG, MBAP, MYOH, and PTBA where the investment decision that can be taken is to buy shares or hold shares if they have owned, and one company, namely BSSR, is in an overvalued condition where the investment decision that can be taken is to sell shares

Case report: Role of imaging in the diagnosis of Achalasia cardia

Background: Achalasia of the cardia is a condition of oesophageal motility disorder that starts at the oesophago-gastric junction and may spraed upwards to involve portions of the mid-oesophagus. It is characterized by inability of the cardiac sphincter to relax fully in response to swallowing, hypertrophy and dilatation of the rest of the oesophagus, and absence or diminution of oesophageal peristalsis. It is commonly seen between the 2nd and 5th decades of life. The case is presented because of its rarity in our  environment and its classical presentationMethods: We reviewed the case of a 36 year old man who presented to the clinic with a 4 year history of progressive chest pain, difficulty in swallowing, difficulty in breathing, and weight loss. Results: Plain radiography showed features that are suggestive of achalasia of the cardia and was confirmed on Barium swallow which showed grossly dilated mid and lower oesophagus with barium seen collected at the lower oesophagus with smooth narrowed tapering distally and absent peristaltic movement noted.computed tomographic  features were in keeping with achalasia cardia. Keywords: Imaging, diagnosis, achalasia cardi

Human cytochrome P450 2B6 genetic variability in Botswana: a case of haplotype diversity and convergent phenotypes

    Get PDF
Identification of inter-individual variability for drug metabolism through cytochrome P450 2B6 (CYP2B6) enzyme is important for understanding the di erences in clinical responses to malaria and HIV. This study evaluates the distribution of CYP2B6 alleles, haplotypes and inferred metabolic phenotypes among subjects with di erent ethnicity in Botswana. A total of 570 subjects were analyzed for CYP2B6 polymorphisms at position 516G>T (rs3745274), 785A>G (rs2279343) and 983T>C (rs28399499). Samples were collected in three districts of Botswana where the population belongs to Bantu (Serowe/Palapye and Chobe) and San-related (Ghanzi) ethnicity. The three districts showed di erent haplotype composition according to the ethnic background but similar metabolic inferred phenotypes, with 59.12%, 34.56%, 2.10% and 4.21% of the subjects having, respectively, an extensive, intermediate, slow and rapid metabolic pro le. The results hint at the possibility of a convergent adaptation of detoxifying metabolic phenotypes despite a di erent haplotype structure due to the di erent genetic background. The main implication is that, while there is substantial homogeneity of metabolic inferred phenotypes among the country, the response to drugs metabolized via CYP2B6 could be individually associated to an increased risk of treatment failure and toxicity. These are important facts since Botswana is facing malaria elimination and a very high HIV prevalence

This research approach is descriptive quantitative research with the type of survey research. The sample unit is a salt business located in Takalar District. Collecting data using a survey with a questionnaire instrument through Likert scale measurement. Respondents were asked to provide answers to closed statements. The respondents are salt business owners. The data analysis method in this study uses descriptive statistics to describe the research variables.
